Surprising the number of jet jockies who want to land these high wing loaded models at speeds you'd land a 40 sized RC plane! Stall near the ground and the most useless thing you have is the airspace above you!
That EE Lightning looks really good!! I remember as a kid watching the real thing flying with the Vulcan Bomber, never forget the noise and ground shaking!!
Thanks for capturing the strikemaster landing incident Bruce. It will help us diagnose what went wrong and where we can improve. Clearly not turning it on its back would be a good start :-) The good news is that the damage seems quite light - a lot of scrapes and grazes mostly but we will look at all structure and components in detail later. The aircraft will be repaired and put back in the air better than before.
I was just thinking watching the turn over that it could have been alot worse. Canopy, vertical fin and the pods by the looks (aside from having an xray done). I hope ya get it fixed without too much trouble.
First hint I have for you is free : Get Motherfucking skills and try to approach on speed and not with hauling ass speed. Every single Pilot in this Video lacks basic skills of landing. Get another hobby or learn about aerodynamics you rich tards!
Maik I look forward to seeing videos demonstrating your pilot skills so they can benefit from your experience and example. Please link here for convenience.
Half of then don’t know how to flare then wonder why their gear always collapses 🤷🏻♂️ The other half flare 6ft off the ground and wonder why they stall into a hard landing 🙄
LOL. I know it's like they just fly directly into the ground, or else land as if ground is 5 feet higher than it is, or land after 3/4 of the runway is behind them. Crazy.
The club members need to sit these guys down for a little chat. On approach, it looks like they're twirling the flight stick in circles. Someone's going to get a big jet in their ear....
Camera work still looks excellent, honestly. The quick-cuts are a good laugh - loved the "why hello there" invert pass at 1:43 - and ooouuuch, that poor Strikemaster. Hope she's buffed out soon. :O
Thanks Bruce. It strikes me that a number of those pilots don't understand the high stall speeds of their aircraft, or the fact that some of the more modern jets are deliberately designed to be unstable, for better manoeuvrability. The full-size aircraft are designed to be flown under computer control, because they are too much for an unassisted pilot o control.
to be able to land your model successfully by being on runway edge, it is necessary to have a lot of experience and landings are not always successful, if we had a front view through a camera placed on the nose of the plane and connected to your smartphone, would be ideal ( virtual reality glasses )
In their defence the runway at Tokoroa is more “north/south” and the prevailing wind is always from the west-hence you will notice them all get hairy at about 15ft up and some more so as they get lower. I don’t know what the wind was like there today as I didn’t go to see Bruce but 30mins up the road where I was flying she was fair gusty on and off all day.
David Webb the one at Tokoroa ISNT because the prevailing wind blows across the runway from the western side where the hangars are (I fly there often). Tokoroa airport used to be fully surrounded by trees and dense forest when it was constructed (Bruce will correct me here if I have anything wrong), so at the time the prevailing wind from the west likely wasn’t an issue (due to all the shelter from the trees). Over the Decades they have deforested the central north island quite extensively, hence we almost always have a Bas&@rd crosswind across the runway (as Bruce himself will tell you). Plenty of us have been caught out by it plenty of times, and I know if you watch Bruce’s videos of full size planes landing from the south end quite often the nose will swing toward the hangar side of the runway due to that wind. In summer it’s fantastic-just about nothing at all, but this time of year it can get quite savage.
What puzzles me is that these high performance aircraft designs as models don't seem to be using auto stabilizing systems for take off and landings? Rgds Laurie
Hell yeah, saw that and thought my tv was glitching haha. No way that should have been flown. Make s you wonder how many have their wings..... as stated in babis xalkias post above someone says they are just builders, not pilots. Think I agree with that. I can fly alot better than some (not all) of them.
Good stuff here. Must second S. Kite's observation below but, I would replace, "a bit of a handful" a double handful! ! I can't imagine that all of those flyers were novices but those aircraft were making them out to be. I'm also guessing that there was a helluva cross wind component as well.
A reason why i fly with console - transmitters. You can fly much more precise and it is much easier to set the sticks stable i a position especially with crosswinds. Elevator and Ailerons together and rudder and throttle together makes it much better to react to stabilize the landing configuration.
Those jets great , landing them a bit of a handful and much carnage . Waiting for part 2 . I don't care about the shaky filming Bruce , you can only do your best :-)
Wow...i really thought you guys had that field all to yourself....pretty much all the time. The jets are cool....too fast for me....at my age. And too expensive. Break my heart to crash it....lol. Can't wait to see the next part!
Was there something screwy going on with conditions that day? I tend to assume these guys know how to fly, but things got tetchy for most of them on approach.
I'm in my 50's and have been flying most of my life, planes, helis, quads, nitro, gas, now electric since it's so cheap, easy and reliable. I doubt I will ever in my life be able to afford the kind of money these gentlemen have invested in these planes. That being said, I am always amazed that the vast majority of turbine pilots, with tens of thousands of dollars wrapped up in these models, can do a high speed pass right down the center of the runway just feet (a meter) off the ground, but don't have the ability to set up a stabilized approach for landing! They are always trying to fly down to the ground and over-controlling every movement. Granted it looked a bit gusty, but still, that didn't seem to bother them on the low pass.
I always wonder why all these people spend so much money for a big jet and they don’t use a stabilizer/self leveling device, at least for take of and landing, it would have save them in many crashes.
Many of those jet pilots would benefit from practising lots of cross wind landings with an FMS EZ Trainer. Once they can repeatedly put one down without knocking the wheels off they could move back onto the jets and do far less damage.
Seems as though there was turbulence from some source. The rising heat from the runway could be a contributing factor for irregular thermals causing the air to become very unstable in ground effect. Take a longer final and come in a little hotter than usual and let the plane fly to the ground, not into the ground. Tried this same technique in the real ones and greased a landing each time.
Are jets so much more difficult to land or do those modellers have more depth to their pockets than depth of their flying ability? Either way they put on a great show, no way I could afford one or fly one, lol.
I love your footage, the low angle shots are sublime. Thank you for sharing. Sorry to hear about your Parkinson's having an impact on your ability to video, that's a bummer.
So sorry you’re dealing with such a horrible disease and I don’t have anything but a comment. I started flying control line models at 8 years. Been flying both R/C and C/L for about 50 years. I’m also a private pilot. I have no turbine experience so maybe the nature of the beast might explain why they don’t execute a go around when the approach is so out of line? The approach is so bad they try to fly it to the ground instead of a nice stabilized approach that only requires minor input to hit the runway? Just venting I guess. It pains me to see such nice aircraft damaged from being low and slow to the point they snap stall a few feet above the runway. Great video. I enjoy the immensely.
You just don't get the freedom of movement with a tripod -- and you can't get close to the ground either. A good tripod (with fluid-damped head) costs $$$$ anyway.
Maybe a monopod (you can make one). Right and the close to ground scale shots really what made this video awesome, i should have mentioned that. love it when a plane rolls by and i can't tell if it is real or not. i made a handheld gimbal (with hero 4) i put on a selfi stick to try and get low close to ground shots. When i'm filming with big camera i always use one of those cheap steadicams.
My camera already has an inbuilt gimballed lens which has meant that my shakes have been well suppressed up until now. th-cam.com/video/gHwVvkbt3RM/w-d-xo.html
Sure nice to see the Lightning and Strikemaster. Loads of good piloting, but I guess the ooops! moments always look better! Don't worry about the Parkinsons. Seen a steady device years ago that acted almost like a shock absorber? Wish I could remember more about it. Sorry.
Some very lovely models there Bruce and some very tough landings, almost looked like cross wind landings... BTW, your secretary didn't use spell checker for your end of video thank you as she put alread instead of already ..... lol
I hope these jets are coming to 'Warbirds Over Awatoto' in Feb 2019, especially the English Electric Lightning, Jet Provost/Strikemaster, F86 Sabre Jet, and the F4 Phantom along with the Typhoon II Eurofighter! Well, all of them really!
Seeing the right aileron bouncing around just while taxiing on the ground tells me that it could be lost in a high speed flutter disassembly while flying. Hope it didn't happen but hope SOMEONE brought it to the pilot/owners attention.
No... there was a slight breeze down the runway. I think it was the lack of wind that may have contributed -- it meant a much higher ground-speed on landing.
Around 1:40...what looks like a mig, loses nose gear. I saw that happen to a real life mig at an airshow in the mid 90s when I was a kid. Edit...Correct myself...it's a sabre
you can't see the plane when you FPV, so why would you spend thousands of dollars on a jet, when you can get the same experience with a $200 fast foamy?
Why is it that all these guys have high dollar planes but all of them cant hardly land any of them. Its like they all freeze up when its time to bring it in.probly should stick with the fomie until you have the landing part dwn..just a thought..
My dad has been fighting Parkinsons for at least ten years. Please get professional help if you haven’t yet. They are making leaps and bounds every year on treatment. I honestly believe a cure is right around the corner. The medications they have available now can all but stop the progression and keep you from getting worse. Thanks for posting.
Yeah, my doctor has already prescribed medication but it only treats the symptoms. There's no cure yet. I think the "cure" is about 10 years away -- you know... like nuclear fusion and flying cars ;-)
xjet go to a Parkinsons specialist. Your primary care physician isn’t a cancer specialist. He isn’t a brain specialist. He isn’t a Parkinsons specialist. They can’t do much more than stop the progression right now but that is pretty amazing considering where we were ten years ago. Don’t give in.
Unfortunately, money is an issue there. Full time TH-camrs don't make much -- unless you're Pewdiepie or Casey Neistat ;-) It's a pretty hand-to-mouth existence here.
That arrest grass growing on the sides of the runway is worth every penny.

That EE Lightning looks really good!! I remember as a kid watching the real thing flying with the Vulcan Bomber, never forget the noise and ground shaking!!
That F4 Phantom at the end of the video is a heart throb. Damn the F4 Phantom is the sexiest plane to ever grace the skies.
Keith Whisman -It is as a fighter but, I love the McDonald-Douglas T-38s more. Best looking supersonic trainer ever.
That lightning looks amazeballs
Lightning!
Thanks for the video Bruce. Some of the airmanship and piloting skills shown here were terrible though. Back to AXN school for some of those guys...
Needed more crashes

Tarquin Brooks model looks ace mate
Used to have a few Saudi coloured strikemasters as a youngster 👌
Didn’t look like it took too much damage either

Condolences to the little pilots in the models and their family's, rip.
Some of those guys should not be flying those big heavy fast jets! Scary.
Yep. This is what happens when you have a lot more money than skill.
Half of then don’t know how to flare then wonder why their gear always collapses 🤷🏻♂️

@@robk.5467 lol I'm picturing them doing that on approach now hahaha it totally looks like that
Thumbnail as the very first seconds of the video : I see this as an absolute win
Great video of some very nice big hour build planes, flying to match mmmmm
That F-4 Phantom at the end almost fooled me, looks like the real thing. Awesome plane, and filming.
Camera work still looks excellent, honestly. The quick-cuts are a good laugh - loved the "why hello there" invert pass at 1:43 - and ooouuuch, that poor Strikemaster. Hope she's buffed out soon. :O

Awesome vid. Those Jets are CRAZY! So sad when one is lost, or damaged, definitely a different loss than a foamy.
That Phatom shocked me. Perfect.
Thumbnail was just the right pick ! Sorry to hear for your Parkinson, Bruce, I hope you don't suffer too much. Regards from France.
_Very nice compilation !_ 👍😎
RCScaleAirplanes -You guys are still the best. Keep those magnificent airplanes and videos coming.
@@charlesbishop7583 _thank you very much. we will do our best to keep you entertained._ 😉👍
Very educated, although some do not know that the wind is here.... from the beginning of the world. Thanks so much Bruce.
Those low-angle taxiing shots are so good. 👌
3:20 i cant believe how quickly it rolled around after the wing tip tank fell off
Surprised me as well. Think it snap rolled due to the pitch up, yaw and cross wind. A deliberate snap roll usually involves stalling one wing.
The Sabre and Lightening jets were awesome looking!
Wow I’ve never seen an RC turboprop before, looks fantastic!
00:01 Here we see how the induced drag has a big effect.
When the thank in the wingtip drop, the lift is greatly reduced at the wingtip.

It seems like that's all they've ever flown (if that!)
Nice F4 Phantom near the end. :)
Good job at least someone was on the spot to video the event. Live your work.
That Eurofighter looks nice.
Are these guys coming in to slow for landings and almost stalling, is that why they are having some hairy landings ?
They always do seem to be doing “controlled” crash landings....
In their defence the runway at Tokoroa is more “north/south” and the prevailing wind is always from the west-hence you will notice them all get hairy at about 15ft up and some more so as they get lower. I guess scale models are just crap to fly compared to ones designed for RC size.
love the "Blunty" and the Lightening, sorry I wasn't there something else came up, great video bruce well done :)
There is no E in Lightning.
What puzzles me is that these high performance aircraft designs as models don't seem to be using auto stabilizing systems for take off and landings? Rgds Laurie
Interesting, the right aileron twitching on the F 4, and he still took off, and a lot of the others obviously with too much control movements,,,
Hell yeah, saw that and thought my tv was glitching haha. No way that should have been flown. Make s you wonder how many have their wings..... as stated in babis xalkias post above someone says they are just builders, not pilots. Think I agree with that. Time stamp please? I don't know what an F4 looks like, nor cam I name most of these aircraft by their model :p
Oh, I think it's pretty obvious which one it was at about 4:00
I took off with that today. But mine was cardboard and my brother was leaving town. I did put it down almost right away though.
Does it actually show the F-4 taking off? I didn't see it.
Is that a. ? control tower I see in the background. What field ?

They want chutes or airbags for the pilots.

That F-86 Sabre is beautiful

Babis xalkias it's a lack of skills.
I would say, "too much ego"
I was just thinking the exact same thing. If I'd thrown $20K at a model I would definitely want a stabilization system on tap - just in case ; )
yes it would make a lot of sense,, I swear by SAFE technology, had hundreds of successful flights with my scale Corsair :)
We don't use auto level but 95% of the pilots at my field fly with a gyro. It's either the Demon Cortex Pro or the Aura8.

That F-86 Sabre is beautiful, but they may need to strengthen the front landing gear.

i like these raw edits. Grab a tripod if you need it.

Love to see these lovely models , but to see them come to grief 😖
That stuffs very cool. Why don't they make the landing gear longer and stronger though? That looked like a lot of very harsh landings.
such amazing models...such terrible piloting skills

Tokoroa airfield.

Tokoroa, New Zealand
Noooooooooooo , was that the Galtech strike master?
yep
Why is FPV so rare with these planes? IMO you could fly them so much more spectacularly with FPV, and have much better control.
you can't see the plane when you FPV, so why would you spend thousands of dollars on a jet, when you can get the same experience with a $200 fast foamy?
Definitely a few ouch moments in there. 😂
