I rewatch that road trip regularly. Every 3 or so weeks. It's so amazing, especially the Zion part. Really makes me wish I could go cross country on a bike.
That Shovelhead is so cool it makes me want to learnt to ride, get a license and convince my wife I need an old beater….. JUST BECAUSE woman, that’s all!
That original journey and documentation of it was epic. Gave credence to your Love of Bike and stubborn mule headed fortitude to push forward to complete the pilgrimage. And to get her fired up again without distractions constantly …… distracting you …. well done. God Bless all Your Distractions !!!!
Watched the trip cross country months ago. Surprised to see your video of it running again! I live here in Ellenton, FL, so you’re close. Maybe we’ll run into each other sometime. Keep it up.
i just moved away from the valrico area. i had lived there for about a year. it was not a pleasant end to my time there. i actually lived up the road from you. seeing all those places you ride is right near where i lived and rode my (acoustic) bike.
I really love that you go on epic trips on old shitty bike no one else dear to ride across the city limit and you take them across the nation. That's effing' awesome dude!
Exactly, that's my train of thought as well. And i remember my dad rode his 82 FXR across Europe back in the day, he also used it as his daily driver all year around in a country that's covered in snow half the year. I've been planning for a while to ride all 50 states in the U.S.A so i have been looking for a newer touring bike, but now i'm maybe i should buy an old shitty bike and do it Shadetree Surgeon style. I have lots of respect for what your doing dude, hats off to you!
I learned to change my own tires on motorcycle a few years ago......I have a couple guys I change tires for.....one buys me a front tire the other gets me a rear tire for changing theirs
Still love that I met you on bloomingdale a few weeks ago. I hope you've been ok after the storms but if you ever see a black subaru forester on the road with a roof rack wave me down and i'm always willing to buy you a drink for being a badass local.
Love my shovelheads,1978 flh bobber/chopper, and a 1982 FLT without the fairing and a 19" spoke front wheel, fishtail open exhaust, 16" apes and lowered. Like a good woman, take care of them, and they will take care of you, neglect them, and you're screwed. Hahaha
I can't wait to get my 86 1200 sportster back on the road and get out and cruise love the channel and can't wait to see what 2025 brings happy New Year to ya'll
Well I have to say good work on the bikes today and looking forward to you finishing the adventure I remember the beginning of it it was a hell of a ride that's for sure but if you're in Tampa I guess you're just going to the other side of Florida are you going up to the furthest point out of the United States that was a good cliffhanger I was just saying to myself I wish you'd make more traveling videos again
I've been trying to figure out what you meant by a wizard stick 😂. Now I know and I have the same thing on my 1988 softail except mine has a brass knob.
I was always told that doing a compression test you should have the throttle wide open, when I did one on my fxr I was at 80 had 110 once it was wide open
We stripped them in the 70’s and 80’s…….rebuild and repaired em right and got rid of the loom and rewired to a 5 wire loom, and rode the living crap out of em. All over Europe and beyond. Know quite a few with 160.000 km between overhaul and some are still running to this day. QC at amf was pretty bad as we found out early. And shovels need good oil and regular change of it. Just strip yours get rid of all that acorn crap and shiny aftermarket shit, re loom and and build it right and you are golden.
And these days we spend eons of time trying to restore and correct everything that people in the 70's and 80's did to molest their shovelheads. Restoring old Harleys is like being an archeologist, trying to find everything that previous owners ruined and broke.
Swapping tyres on your bike should be a basic knowledge. When I got my first bike 4 years ago it still had it's original tyres on it. And it was a 1999 Suzuki VL1500 Intruder. I succeeded in replacing them with new fresh Michelin Commander III's. But what a huge pain to do.
And by the way, I always wanted an Evo Softail but, thanks to you, I now want a shovelhead 🤣 The problem? Both of them are fucking expensive as shit here in the UK... I'll probably have better luck asking my cousin in Florida to store one for me in his garage and have it shipped here 🤣🤣🤣

Oh man. This is gonna be good. Too cold right now Josh to head this way. You crazy bugger. I love your trips .
I have a 1978 FXS that has sat for a few years (6). This video is getting my sorry a$$ stirred up to get it running again. Thank you much!
Go get it running and ride it!
Get a factory workshop manual and stick to it. You can also watch a couple of hundred hours of Pacific Mike. Only buy quality parts.
Dude, the shovelhead gallop going perfectly on time with the soundtrack was beyond epic
You should do a cross country tour to raise money for forgotten angels like Adam Sandoval’s convoy. It would be really fun.
I said “its” meant “her”. Lol. Made ya read the original comment.

Weird
@@Jack97stu keep it weird
Your passion for vintage bikes shines through in every mile! 💯 You inspired me to ride again this 2025!
Dude, there’s a bird nest in the front bag! Or at least there was a bird that flew out of of it! LOL
yeah, i noticed that too.
That Shovelhead is so cool it makes me want to learnt to ride, get a license and convince my wife I need an old beater….. JUST BECAUSE woman, that’s all!

Dude I don’t know how you keep all those fly girls around you, much respect, your a great mechanic too
I really enjoyed this one. My favorite motorcycle channel.
I appreciate the hell outta your support my friend
Joe taught you so much. I remember not long ago you said you really didn’t know how to work on engins
Probably a lot of moisture in there, it'll get better the more it runs! Well done Shadetree Surgeon! 👏👏👏👏👏
I love that front left indicator just hanging there wobbling around
Props on your troubleshooting prowess, Josh...and enjoy the infectious humor! ♥️🤣💪
Anyone else notice Josh just casually being a Disney princess and attracting birds to his bike at 14:30?
But does it stop? As you approach a stop sign lol. I'm glad you got it running again 🤘. Good vid
My inner sadist loves that I played a part in bringing this frustration to you! 🤣🤣🤣
Happy New Year, Bud🥳🎉
@@pacopetepnw3434happy new year to you as well!
Man thats a lovely Harley with exactly the right patina to ducttape ratio
That ride you did with this bike was hilarious to watch, and I felt bad for you and the bike! But the fortitude you had on that trip was amazing!!
Watched the trip cross country months ago. Surprised to see your video of it running again! I live here in Ellenton, FL, so you’re close. Maybe we’ll run into each other sometime. Keep it up.
That lotion pump thingy on the bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil was pure genius!
Happy New Year. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long since you rode that bike from Portland
i just moved away from the valrico area. i had lived there for about a year. it was not a pleasant end to my time there. i actually lived up the road from you. seeing all those places you ride is right near where i lived and rode my (acoustic) bike.
Heck yeah, well done on the Shovelhead! Also Happy New Year to you all!
I use to change car tyres with a block of wood and a sledgehammer years ago.
I really love that you go on epic trips on old shitty bike no one else dear to ride across the city limit and you take them across the nation. That's effing' awesome dude!
Hey, the way I figure it back in the day when this was new that’s what everyone was riding cross country!

Happy New Year Shade, Camz and Cloe.
Feels ya on the cleaning bit; my shed is a jumbled nightmare of a year's worth of "eh, I'll just put it here." Sigh.
How on earth did you even look at this bike again after that "trip". Hats off to you and your resiliency lol!
I learned to change my own tires on motorcycle a few years ago......I have a couple guys I change tires for.....one buys me a front tire the other gets me a rear tire for changing theirs
16:50 you can see fire spitting from the front exhaust port 😊
Down on front cylinder exhaust valve. You can hear it. But still best sounding shovel I heard this hour.
Still love that I met you on bloomingdale a few weeks ago. I hope you've been ok after the storms but if you ever see a black subaru forester on the road with a roof rack wave me down and i'm always willing to buy you a drink for being a badass local.

Now that you have the Beast up and running, can you do an episode on tuning a Harley? Sounds like the Old Girl needs some loving.
Hang on is that a jigsaw on the bike lift you are fully invested and I love it
That poor Superglide deserves nothing less than a full restoration.
I really hope you at least attached that exhaust pipe, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if you just sent it. Safe travels brother.
Hope to see you again gibtown bike fest! It would be slick if I was riding home on the fxr.
I really wish there was a sessions dealer in NC. I might have to conjure up a sketchy mule! 🤙
This is my second favorite bike in your collection
I like these shadetree mechanic episodes
14:23, where's the birdy hiding? Toolroll? 😂

I was interested as soon as I noticed the duct tape wrapped around the tank 😂
I've been trying to figure out what you meant by a wizard stick 😂. Now I know and I have the same thing on my 1988 softail except mine has a brass knob.
Idle it up man that slow idle will 😊destroy an old Shovel.
Wow!@ it started that old shevelhead great job
Happy New Year, Josh🎉😁
anyone else notice the bird in the front fork tool bag starting at 14:24..almost missed it.
I was always told that doing a compression test you should have the throttle wide open, when I did one on my fxr I was at 80 had 110 once it was wide open
That trip was 3 years ago?!?! Jeesus H. Murphy! how long have I been following you? lol.
10:12 do you think the oil helped seal up the gaps in the shot rings
Shovelheads, coolest bike ever, change my mind.
Beautiful bean footage 😊
Break out the gravy, we got potatoes baby!!!
Bro, the bird in the front bag lmao 😂
Love love love this vid...... And this bike although I may never be competent enough to own a shovel. 😂
What a beauty! Shovelhead Summer 2025!!
Your distractions are way better than mine, LOL!
Hey man ya gotta hold the throttle wide open when ya check the compression!!
I had a clamp on it! :)
Not true
I've tried it both ways on several bikes and cars and it didn't make a difference on any of them
@@shadetreesurgeon Kool, kinda hard to see that with my crappy monitor!😁
Hey Josh, you need to paint it ork red so it goes faster! I also really want that 83 FXR Shovelhead. I legit want one know!
the grains of shadetree lore fuel me
throttle should be open when checking for compression i think 🤔sounded good once the oil had burnt out of the pipes .
The early part of this video is a prime example of why they call it the Troublehead.
The ducktape special is a prime example of a ratbike in progress.
Get enough bits and bobs hanging off of it and you'll never see a bit of that duct tape.
Warhammer 40K reference?! Hell Yeah
I feel ur pain man! I've got a 78

i just cant belive its already been 3 years ,,, wow
In crust we trust. Question, does Sessions have products in Canada. I can see the Olympic peninsula from my place.
My first bike was a shovelhead i remember all of this i even had the acorn nuts😅
It's a beaut, Clark!
Sounds awesome!!
That's what happens to me after I hit the bat a couple times . Have to do it again before I get it right .
But it's not legal in Indiana so shhhhh.!
you should try compression test with wot. This allows more air thus more compression
I believe you’ll find it’s the relay
Should do a cross country trip on an ironhead
Right on brother 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yup I have a few sacrificed wrenches for my ironhead!!!
Possible restoration videos for this bike?
I felt physically ill during the clip going over the running bike.
If I had a choice of bikes to win, it’d be this beauty!
Swapping tyres on your bike should be a basic knowledge. When I got my first bike 4 years ago it still had it's original tyres on it. And it was a 1999 Suzuki VL1500 Intruder. I succeeded in replacing them with new fresh Michelin Commander III's. But what a huge pain to do.
that was a relay solinoid is on the primary
Please tell me someone else saw the bird fly out of the handlebar bag at the 14:30 mark…..
Custom tools are the way of the Jedi.
😂😂I'm Canadian....toke on brother !!!
Sorry bro only the Emperor here. So we can middle ground to the machine spirit and Omnnisiah i guess 😂.
That’s what Harley’s do, They break, don’t feel bad it’s just the way it is
Is oden not making your gloves anymore? They have been out of stock forever
Right on bud
Are Harness donations still qualified for the bike drawing.
And by the way, I always wanted an Evo Softail but, thanks to you, I now want a shovelhead 🤣
The problem? Both of them are fucking expensive as shit here in the UK... I'll probably have better luck asking my cousin in Florida to store one for me in his garage and have it shipped here 🤣🤣🤣
U da man Josh!!!!ba-ba-ba bad...
