  • The sub-£4000 price point in the EMTB world is getting ever more competitive, and Giant's new entrant to the market is one of the more interesting models in that space! The Giant Stance E+ might not have all the features of its more expensive Giant stablemates, but does that mean that it can't compete when it comes to getting out on the trail? Steve Jones decided to find out for himself.

I have a e stance, few years old now, in 27.5+ mode. Yes, one of the equipment was basic, and I had to retro fit a dropped, but apart from that it's been great. 2.6" tyres make a huge difference. Zero point paying silly money for a lighter ebike, when in fact it will still be a very heavy bike!. So no money has been spent on carbon upgrades for the first time. I use it on enduro bike park trails, red and black, although I don't get it into the air, as I'm not into that stuff.

I had the 2020 Stance E (new in Aug 2019 - 130/120mm travel) and was absolutely impressed with its versatility and overall excellence. I live in the California high desert with very hilly and rocky technical trails, sandy fire roads and jeep track. I went on ALL of it with relative ease with competitive handling and motor. I enjoyed it so much I upgraded to a 2022 Trance + E. Both great bikes, but the Stance E can do over 95% of what the Trance + E can do - at half the price. If you are looking for a great bike at the affordable price point, you won't be disappointed!

This is exactly what the emtb market needs. Affordable but full performance bikes. Ebike prices are heading upwards every year, and i dont know how people can justify or afford an emtb today. I have a 2019 Merida eone sixty 900e which cost me $7000 Australian in 2019, but has absolute top of the line components everywhere. To buy a bike with this spec today would cost $15000 or more. That is motorbike pricing. We need more bikes like this Giant that people can afford

I have the same thought process as you. In January 2019 me and my wife brought a new Giant Trance E+1 each. They still go awesome and have been trouble free (Yamaha PWX2). $5500 NZD each. I will not replace my ebike if it dies because they are taking the piss $. I actually brought a new motorcycle instead because I COULD SEE VALUE IN THAT.

Superb, very capable Bike, I'd been off mountain bikes for 17 years, rode mountain bikes for 20 years before that, and races downhill for some 5 years.
Now ages 60, I purchased a Stance E+2 last October, after re-Searching my options on E-Bikes, with the Stance, I've no regrets, it deals with everything I throw at it, I'm loving the single tracks again, and Benifiting massively with my health.
More than happy to recommend it.

For the price, the package can't be beat. I love mine. I got the E+ EX version which comes with a light, metal fenders and a rack. I use mine exclusively for road/gravel and light smooth XC trails. It's cool to see it used for harder riding also. So versatile.

@@edgarygleung Rides on pavement just fine with stock 2.4 tires, the rekon's have small knobs so they do great on road and gravel, especially if you pump them up hard. Given my use case, my next set will about the same diam, but probably semi-slick.

I just picked up a Stance E+ 1 and am finding it to be an amazing bike! I'm fortunate to live in a community that has over 17 miles of trails ranging from paved paths to jeep/fire trails to some somewhat technical single-track, and am able to tackle all of it with ease. The 75NM motor gives me (at 150 lbs) plenty of power everywhere.

Love this bike, From the baby heads, fast berms and technical descents in Tahoe, to the fire roads and steep climbs of the Bay Area, this bike rocks.
I’ve been Mtn biking for over 50+ years mostly in Vermont and now California and am now 76, as a former Pro ski racer/ coach, I really appreciate the way the bike handles and puts the power down. I researched Emtbs for about a year before purchasing this bike based on the specs and price below 4k. Thanks for shining a light on this bike with your excellent comparison video.

The 447mm chainstay is on the Trance E Elite which is mid weight mullet. The Trance X is a full 29er and a more likely comparison (battery size, 29/29).
In comparison to the alloy XL Trance X in the low setting the XL Stance has:
    10mm more BB Drop
    Same STA
    Similar HTA
    5mm shorter chainstays
    16mm more stack
    Same reach
    81mm higher standover
I'd much rather Giant NZ made this available in the Pro model in NZ, even if they dropped the Trance 3 in the lineup to avoid pricing conflict.

My old Fathom has the Pro motor with 80nm of torque. This new Stance has Sport motor with 75nm. Am I likely to notice any difference in power? I nearly never go above the 3rd level of assistance on my Fathom.

Who commutes on dirt tracks? That would be my ideal if the infrastructure were in place; I’ve always Thought of this, while looking at certain pieces of land, by the road, as I miss commuting via single track as I was able to in Arizona. Wouldn’t it be nice as more people ride mountain and e-bikes to develop commuting single track trail systems.

@EMBN Why don't they sell it in Japan? Looks like we're stuck with the older models. And when I say models, I mean exactly "2" electric mountain bikes that Giant sells in Japan. Perhaps you can ask your Rep if customers in Japan have any other options to select their bikes?

If this bike were offered on sale for circa US$3k, would it still be a no-brainer to get one, or is there now something that offers better value at this price point?

Ahhh.... so it's made for how normal (but enthusiast) people ride in the most common environments and circumstances.
Rather than for racers, or people that want to fantasize themselves as a 'racer'.
Seems like a solid offering - except it's not powerful enough and doesn't have enough battery. But it looks like you could fill up the front triangle with an 'accessory' battery.

  • @MrFlapstick

Increased density and lower weight aint better for battery safety and impact resistance! Better for riding but more energy in a smaller frame is not a safety feature

    Giant's drive-train is really INEFFICIENT.
They advertise that you can get 190kms with a full battery - but you're hard pressed to get even 50kms

The drivetrain, is most likely Shimano with a Yamaha motor. Giant doesnt build drivetrains.
      Shimano, is Shimano.

You said it's the 75Nm SyncDrive Sport motor but your silver (top) model has the Pro motor with 85Nm.
So it's no wonder that it was faster than the other motor ;-)

I don’t mean to be negative but you must be nuts paying £4 grand for a bike when you can buy a plush BMW for the same amount..I just wish they would make electric bikes more affordable for the masses..Especially when we are constantly told about emissions and living green..!!

What is it with the presenters on the global (more so on EMBN) continually referring to carbon as "PLASTIC", something that's only started happening in the last month or so when the bike industry seems hellbent on pushing aluminium framed bikes as the next best new thing and the global network seems intent on playing along and slagging off carbon as "PLASTIC".

This is the e+ pro 0 which isn’t available in the UK. Also has the sync drive pro motor (85nm not 75nm) and the battery pack comes standard at 800wh in this model so wasn’t swapped out. Look at the motor close-up right at the end of the video which clearly shows “Syncdrive Pro” written on the side. Pointless review and a few lies thrown in. Giant clearly influencing the script here
