  • Most feasible theories on the Loop Theory that connects Neon Genesis Evangelion TV story with other storylines, including Rebuild of Evangelion or the New Theatrical Edition.
Rebuild of Evangelion, known in Japan as Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition is a Japanese animated film series and a retelling of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime television series, produced by Studio Khara. Hideaki Anno served as the writer and general manager of the project, with Kazuya Tsurumaki and Masayuki directing the films themselves. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Ikuto Yamashita and Shirō Sagisu returned to provide character designs, mechanical designs and music respectively.

I believed in the loop theory just from watching the original anime series, long before I watched the Rebuilds or read any of the manga. The evidence of the time loop is subtly there from the beginning. Everything that has been produced since then just reinforces my belief that the loop is in fact reality in the Evangelion timelines.

    • @Gunsight-One
      @Gunsight-One 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

As an addition to this thought. One of the biggest pieces of evidence is the actual physical appearance of Adam as the giant being of light during second impact. His shape is that of an Evangelion unit. Perhaps what Seele found wasn't exactly the original Adam at all. It was a clone of Adam in the form of an Evangelion unit from a previous loop. Why would Adam, a being from the ancesteal root race, have the shoulder armor pieces. Those are additions added by man for combat accessories. There is no logical reason for Adam to look so much like an Evangelion unit. Anno didn't make mistakes here, this was intentional.

During that last dialogue we see a flashback of Shinji meeting Kaworu as a child, explaining how they met. Fuyutsuki said in the third movie that Shinji's memory was manipulated, which explains why he didn't remember Kaworu. The visual references in the end of 3.0+1.0 are metareferences to the Evangelion franchise, not proofs of the loop theory. The loop theory is incompatible with the rebuilds having a different lore and charachter backstory than the original nge.

One thing that REALLY grabbed me in 3.0+1.0 was that it was discovered that Shinji's sync ratio with Unit 01 was at INFINITY. Does that possibly explain why Shinji was powerful enough to create Impacts?
I also think the sheer level of excess in the Rebuilds represents that this was the loop where things are going way too far, that it was time for a new solution. And that solution was to rid humanity of the EVAS.

Another thing you can take into consideration is the fact that Anno and Sadamoto are incredibly derivative of works that they themselves made and work that they love. Madoka Magica is based on the relationships in Evangelion, and in Rebellion they fill the story with Evangelion motifs and references. Without spoiling, it could very well be a nod at the themes present in that work as well.
Another thing that I haven't seen pointed out is how Manga Kaworu acts in comparison to anime and Rebuild and the idea that Manga Kaworu is the 1st coffin, NGE/EoE is the second. We can see this in how clueless and "less smooth" I guess he was when talking to Shinji in the manga. Another thing about 2.0 is that the interviews also say a lot about how Kaworu already feels jealous during his appearance. Like, this is an interesting scene that apparently was "always going to be there" which probably means it was at least a bit important. The line about bringing Shinji happiness again.
Tsurumaki: Kaworu’s line stayed the same from the very first storyboard. It was something he said while wearing his usual relaxed smile. Of course, at the last minute, just, I think, before we started postsynchronization, we began talking about whether or not it would be better if Kaworu looked scary during that scene.
Interviewer: As a result, it looks like he’s come to take his bride by force!
Tsurumaki: Right, right (laughing). [We thought it would be] more interesting if Kaworu looked like [he was thinking]: “You’ve been with a woman while I’ve been away? How dare you…!” It’s not Kaworu’s usual relaxed expression; he’s somehow become irritated, right?

    @MysterEeee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Edit: I kind of went long on this. I'm not all that great with TL;DR summations either unfortunately. Apologies but conciseness is still a work in progress for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video. You've once again sparked my imagination and motivation for some theorycrafting. I do find the "loop theory" pretty compelling but I don't think it goes deep enough into the psyche of Anno and the other creators:
I'll agree that a loop is occurring much like Groundhog's Day but I'm going to suggest the loop aspect only the sort of x-axis of a two axis story model. I feel the y-axis is related to the "meta" aspects of this franchise and the C. G. Jung's theory of consciousness.
I feel there are four dimensions at play in this "y-axis" that Anno consciouly views his work from and to provide his own theory of consciousness through his work in general but of course more specifically the Evangelion franchise.
I'll ramble about Evangelion's "model of human Consciousness" by playing with the speculative y-axis to the "loop theory" x-axis below:
    Collective Unconscious:
    - A Jungian concept rooted in the "ancestral" and physiological aspects of human Consciousness. Those aspects that inform the mysterious link between the world of human DNA and biology (represented by the FAR, Adam, Lilith, Angels) to the simulated world of human Consciousness that "we" (represented by the Lilim) do not have direct conscious access to but instead replicate through material creations such as technology (fruit of knowledge)
Think of the aspects of human Consciousness that regulate the human body that you don't need to consciouly attend to such as heartbeating, digesting, hormone releasing, sexual reproduction, healing, and sometimes sometimes breathing etc etc. (Fruit of life)
I'm speculating this unconscious dimension of consciousness and its link to the rest of human organs through the tree-like roots of the nervous system (Tree of Life) is what informed the general and progressive direction of Adam's children as representations of the physiological aspects of the human being. Also helps explain the "why" of the similarities to Angels "dna" and Lilim "dna" as two aspects of the human being.
The Angels represent the physiological aspects the nervous system links/roots with and the Lilim are the mental projections within the conscious simulation that the nervous system (specifically the brain) generates through various synchronizations of neural (NERV) activity.
The main archetypes Jung described existing in this space were the Syzygy (Anima and Animus) which seem to link up with ADAM and LILITH fairly well. The LCL may in fact be a blatant reference to the collective unconscious as a whole.
As a side note the fascinating symbiosis between human mitochondria (the life givers) and human cells (the form givers) as having different DNA may also be an influence on the lore.
    - When it came to the original Neon Genesis Evangelion "story" as a sort of artificial human being (cheekily self referenced with the Eva units themselves) I believe this is the area where Anno places his "Otaku" aspect within.
The sort of collective wellspring of all the media outside his own work. More than likely this space is highly dominated by anime and tokusatsu and psychological theories of consciousness (especially the concept of introspection). The 2001, Ideon, Ultraman etc reference reveal this.
    - Focusing more specifically on the New Theatrical Evangelions as his current iteration of an artificial human or simulation of his Consciousness this is where Anno's own past works outside of the Evangelion franchise now rest. One of these references include the design of the angel hex symbols and Nadia as well as Asuka and Freud Jung.
    Personal Unconscious:
    - I would consider the dimension of consciousness just outside the reach of conscious activity that can be more directly accessed.
The "place" where memories and dreams and feelings can seem to mysteriously bubble up from.
My loose speculation is that SEELE or Adam's children or both are a sort of representation of the machinations of this area. If SEELE isn't a representative of this area then they are more than likely close to it being at the deepest "depths" of the personal conscious.
Adam's children appear to fit Jung's archetype of the Shadow that represents this dimension better than the other entities/Organizations in Evangelion.
The irony is that this dimension isn't antagonistic to the individual in the whole sense and is merely perceived so by an individual scared to face themselves. They are actually just as much a part of the human being (heck probably closer to the whole being) as conscious thoughts and actions are.
    - The most important archetype Jung detailed, that of the Self lies at the nucleus of total human Consciousness. This archetype acts as a binder or conduit between all dimensions of human Consciousness and is typically represented by a world tree in many mythologies and potentially Christ in Christian theology.
To the human being he described this as our conscience that tries to influence our ego to stay in alignment with it for maximum Individuation by choosing selfless acts to balance selfish ones.
I mention this archetype because I think it helps link NGE to NTE and informs how exactly the behaviors of NTE characters seem to be less... Toxically selfish.
I think this archetype is also the component that produces the experience of self-awareness or self-consciousness, which comes into play again in the contrast between NGE and NTE.
    - Focusing on the original Neon Genesis Evangelion this is where Anno's own past work use to rest as an influence on the series as representing the memories/dreams of this "artificial human". But they weren't sufficiently related to the characters of NGE to make a lasting impact on choosing selfless actions.
I feel the Self archetype mentioned previously was the stunted or ignored component of this "artificial human" NGE that produced the traumatic ending of EoE. EoTV sort of had this but it was rejected pretty hard by the fan base.
This idea has me seeing NGE as an "artificial human" that lacks the necessary "memories" to achieve self-consciousness which I think Anno earnestly attempts to rectify with NTE.
    - Now when it comes to the New Theatrical Evangelions this is where Neon Genesis Evangelion now firmly rests. The original series has become less a part of the "loop" and more of the memories/dreams of the the Rebuild films.
Like our own memories allow for the necessary life history to properly introspect and make contact with the self so too does NGE for NTE. The more "concrete" memories of the characters that NGE provides (compared to Anno's non-Eva works) "underneath" the NTE characters allows for NTE as a whole to become a more self-consciousness "artificial human" compared to NGE.
    Personal conscious
    - This is the dimension where our thoughts reside. The conscious world that exists underneath the surface world of action. It contains the knowledge of the unknowable Real that is built from the data (sensations) collected and memories stored by the nervous system.
The Ego Archetype, which I assert is more Gendo than SEELE, is considered the king or ruler of this dimension but also the false-god or fallen one of total Consciousness.
You can see this dimension represented by the geo front and more explicitly with the command center of central dogma. When in the command center information is visualized and is even give a big ass screen to "see" the world much like how our brain creates a simulation of the outside world that it does not have direct access to
lol much like our conscious aspect doesn't have direct access to the unconscious. Everyone's got problems of accessing information especially when you don't communicate 😉
    - For NGE and then later NTE this is the dimension where the stories "play" out and any "looping" would occur as a sort of meta reference to an audience watching the story multiple times and if toxic enough can become the hell that is otaku escapism where attachment to the simulation occurs instead of exploring the Real beyond the screen.
    Collective Conscious
    - The space where thoughts become actions for the human being. The Persona archetype or the many masks we wear depending on the situation exists in this dimension.
This dimension is represented by the world outside the geofront and is most explicit with Tokyo-III. The Persona archetype can be soon through all the Lilim that are each different masks of Anno with Shinji being the chosen one Persona of all others whether he likes it or not.
NTE changes this up a bit with the creation of Wille and AAA Wunder being the better realized aspect of the Persona as a whole with several "masks"/characters working together for the greater good instead of burdening a select few children.
    - For NGE and NTE this is the dimension of the "Real" where the crew and audience exist. The proverbial cosmos to the characters of the story.
End of Evangelion makes a pretty reference to this space when Eva Unit-01 (a representation of NGE as a whole) is shown floating into the beyond with the statement of being eternal proof that mankind/Anno ever existed.

      @MysterEeee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Gunsight-One Yeah... "Carried away" is my shadow... I'll take a crack at a TL;DR-ish
      - The art design and underlying mechanics/philosophy of all the supernatural and technological aspects of Evangelion like the FAR, Seeds, Angels, and Evas etc etc are based on human physiology.
      - NGE and NTE are not linked as a loop exactly
      - NGE and NTE represent "artificial humans" and/or simulations of human consciousness according to Anno's own philosophy presented within those stories.
      - According to C.G. Jung's Theory of Consciousness there exists 4 dimensions to human consciousness. 2 are unconscious and 2 are conscious with each side having a collective and personal dimension.
      - The personal unconscious "store" and "filter" your memories, dreams, and feelings to your personal conscious that formulates as thoughts.
      - Like Anno's non-Evanglion previous work was for NGE, now for NTE the original series of NGE is the "personal unconscious" of NTE.
      - NGE provides the "memories" for the characters of NTE which allows NTE to be a tad more meta by allowing this version of Anno's "Artificial Human" to be portrayed as more self-consciousness than NGE. This allows for characters to have a stronger "conscience" that motivates more selfless decisions than those made in NGE.
Not sure if I succeeded in condensing... Ehhh

The original Evangelion Movie may be the timeline where Asuka makes a sexual connection with Shinji, which alters things to where the events that play out in the movie occur the way they do ... thinking about it, everything happened after Shinji blew his load dishonorably, then he just gave up on life until he saw Asuka in peril & then finally just instinctively gave away his chance to affirm on the higher existence he was offered (with Rei, in the timeless zone) in exchange for going back to his existence with Asuka. He fails to kill Asuka, attempting to strangle her, even though in the alternate timeline we are shown (one where the frustrated Shinji is NOT sexually connected with Asuka, so reacts more explosively when emotionally provoked) Shinji actually ends up killing Asuka out of delirious anger.
I think it's a pretty solid theory. The movie is actually a view into the possibility where we see -- instead of in the original storyline, where Asuka is killed in the bathtub after going nuts -- a version of Asuka that entered a comatose state but is still alive with Shinji, due to the CONNECTION she formed with him, after engaging sexually, the "Do You Love Me?" Theory, as referenced in another TH-cam video. So then, in the original storyline, Shinji ends up getting shot & killed by Misato outside by the water in the beginning of the 2nd to last episode, & that is the initial timeline, where Rei dies, Asuka gives up, & Shinji kills Kaworu ... the movie is a glimpse at what happened when Shinji chooses Asuka, I think.
Consider also how, by ultimately choosing Asuka, Shinji also sees Misato shot & killed, as well as rejecting Rei in the timeless zone. Otherwise, he would have been killed by Misato & been shown things as they were portrayed in the final episode of the series.
It is a comparison of Death VS (Not)Death ... Do you really not want to die?

It doesn't make sense because it's false. Kaworu lives a personal cycle of death and rebirth within the rebuilds timeline, that doesn't mean at all that there is a loop.

@@erc3338 it was explained in the second movie that that was a cosenquence of the Second Impact in the Rebuild timeline, that's not at all a proof in favor of the loop theory

Many people in the comments stated that the last movie has proved the loop theory, but that's just wrong SPOILERS
Kaworu is the only charachter who lives a personal loop of death and resurrection within the Rebuild's timeline, in which he met Shinji as a child. The Rebuilds have a different lore than that of the original series, which is incompatible with the idea that it's the same timeline. Also, how come Asuka is now a clone, if the theory says the world resets to its original states, only accounting for the effects of the Impacts?
And last, Rei II in the end of the movie clearly states that time cannot be rewinded, it can only move forward.

@Amelia Fathiyah EN Vtuber the Anima novels are not canon. Also, there is no Anti-universe in the White Moon there, nor the Adams or the Golgota Cross. That also doesn't explain why the Impacts work differently in the Rebuild. It's just not the same universe.

Shinji states he has met Kaworu many times before. They are destined to meet. Shinji when talking about Rei with Neon Genesis showcases the orginal episodes in the background if u notice. That just proves how this was a time loop all along which finally ended
