Here a funky jam track based on yet another live recording of Jimi Hendrix's Hey Baby. This on is faster and has a funkier groove.
Watch out for the modal interchange on the D chord! In A minor we would usually expect Dm, especially because of the G and F chords, but instead we get a D major, which puts us firmly in A DORIAN (just for that chord).

Funky Hendrix Jam | Guitar Backing Track (A Minor - 82 BPM)
Your goal as a soloist is to create MELODY. Our neck diagrams give you the notes you can use to create that melody in REAL TIME. Think of the Diagrams as 3 layers of information:
1. PENTATONIC - The pentatonic scale works all the time and almost never changes, so this is the basic level.
2. MODE - The mode will always be the pentatonic PLUS 2 NOTES (modes have 7 notes). The mode can change depending on the chords (modal interchange).
3. CHORD - The chord layer shows you the notes of the chord changes (aka the HARMONY) in REAL TIME. Outgoing notes get smaller and fade out, incoming notes will fade in, so you know what notes to go for next.

This is great for soloing on the 5th fret then up to 17th because literally every note in the blues scale sounds good because all the notes in the bass line are in that scale so you don’t have to jump around
Except F isn’t in the a minor blues scale.
Bend the F to F#, choke out and release.

I’ve no doubt this is a stupid question but..
I only know the pentatonic scale so can recognise that on this. What are the other colours and how do they ‘combine’ with pentatonic or why
@@PB-guitar not a stupid question! in improvisation there is what is referred to as playing “modally” which is when you play one scale over a set of chord changes (such as playing a minor pentatonic over these chords). there is also what’s referred to as “playing the changes” which is where you switch the scale you’re using depending on the chord that is being played. so for example if you played the notes from a G scale over a G chord and so on and so forth. playing changes is very common in jazz! hope that made sense and maybe helped a little bit!! :)
Great track but it's not fully in minor cause that last D major chord has a F# making it Dorian - so switch over when it comes to that chord. Sounds really cool to focus on that note
