    I run a 102" whip on my Tram 5" magnet triple mount. Done high speeds, hit plenty of things with it. Never had any sign it would fly off. I'm pretty convinced you can't lose your mobile antenna, ANY of them, with these mount.

    I would put two magnets facing forward and the 3rd facing the rear. It seems to me the wind would have to push against two magnets with one in the rear. I’d trust it in that orientation.

      That's interesting I'm hearing that a lot in these comments. My theory was that it was more aerodynamic with 1 in front.

    • @Bob814u
      @Bob814u 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hamradiocq Aerodynamics suffer if the one magnet in the front pops and the antenna flies off (not going to happen but...) With the two in the front it will hold better. To demonstrate try pulling the antenna off with two magnets away from you compared to one away from you. Just my opinion and experience. The mag mount will hold for sure. Put two magnets facing forward. Replace the spring with Hustler solid (tubing) mast. Your placement is the best on a vehicle and is paramount if you want performance. The 54" mast would be best. Also get the much slender resonator from Hustler. Less wind resistance.

    The hustler resonators were meant to be mounted on a 22 - 54" mast, or in the case of the 75/80 also on top of an 4BTV base vertical. They are great resonators and WatersStanton (YT channel) is also using them mounted directly on a base. I think that next to a larger screwdriver, the Hustler antennas are probably the best. I used them for years.

    As in some earlier post you need a mast. Most use the 54 inch mast, but
    there is a 22 inch mast that comes with a longer stinger to go on top
    of the resonator. If stick with what you have you need a way longer stinger.
    For what you have there the magnet would be just fine, but if
    you get one of the mast don't use the magnet unless you are parked somewhere.

Tuned for resonance with my new MFJ antenna analyzer and called CQ on 14.307 after asking if the frequency was in use. Told that I was interfering with a net in Hawaii! I guess it works. I have the 430S grounded to the car frame and SWR is 1.2:1. Then I broke through a pile up after 3 calls and worked Italy with a 5x7. All fixed mobile in my driveway. 1k output? Wow. I have had terrible luck with HF mag mounts. The coil is ground, so right out the gate you are running on a loading coil. I use a door jam / trunk antenna mount and a HF whip, works great. ( on 40 and above, I bonded the doors and body ) As far as the mag mount, you want to glue on felt or a thin piece of inner tube type rubber. The mount alone won’t move but it will leave rings over time. Water gets trapped in between the mount and the roof. I have had to buff out the marks from the mag mounts we use on fleet vehicles at work after extended amounts of time.

      For an RF ground 6in is long so it wont help a lot to add one where your are mounted. You do get RF capacitor coupled with that mag mount. The point is your antenna has a high Q and very short for 20m. A longer whip and more adjustment you can get to a more reasonable SWR.

    Hi Tom,
    Great test you have done.
    I have recently imported the 80.40,20,15,11,10 Hustler Super resonators from HRO to compliment the FT857D and Ameritron ALS-500MR setup. Running them in a base loaded configuration, the only one that would give a good SWR was 80m.
    As others have indicated a mast underneath them is required to lower the SWR and improve efficiency,which I plan to do.
    I am still in the trial days due to winter weather making things unpleasant out side.

    @dandypoint 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The resonator is not meant to be the whole antenna. I use a 54 inch mast and the resonator is simply top loading. I have the complete set of resonators for 80 through 10. The mast alone will even work on 6 meters. The current distribution on any antenna is always zero at the open end building up to maximum current at 1/4 wave down from the end. With a short antenna you can put a loading coil at the bottom ( high current point = high loss) or at or near the top ( low current = low or lower loss). I think top loading is always best if you have a choice. Current is what causes radiation. You want to have as much current as possible over as long a length as possible. Top loading does this better than bottom loading.

    On RBN, you can call "CQ TEST" and get a report. That will cut down on probability of getting a call back.
    To run mobile on the cheap, use your mag mount, a wolf river coil, and a 5-6 foot whip. You'll do well on 10-40 mtrs.

    Heads up on the shield contact on the magnet it might just be a light pressure contact and once moisture gets in there its done, Cost me a expensive radio repair. Also you might find if you can run a jumper from the shield to the car frame you will see much better performance. In my case I tapped a hole in to the triangle and bolted the shield contact to it and then attached vis alligator clips from that to the frame. Then just covered it all with hot glue to keep water out. Did not help on the receive but on the transmit it was night and day.

I always run my Hustler resonators mounted on a hustler mobile mast that gives you a center loaded antenna, much more efficient radiator. you can also get a multi mount under the resonator and get up to 4 band antenna. I ran that at Scout camp not knowing what band would be hot. That is a good resonator they sell smaller diameter resonators but you lose band width.
