People from all around the world, live in mumbai and when you see them celebrating festivals here in their different traditions or ways it gives you the vibe of togetherness. And let me tell you whole coastline of mumbai gets decorated during diwali which looks so good with sea especially at churchgate.

In my colony, everyone know each other, we prefer playing games at night rather than burning crackers. Whole colony organise a common dinner for everyone. Everyone exchanges sweets and other homemade food items like michr, barfi, chakli, mithe and namkeen pade, gunjiya, bakarwadi etc. With each other. Dance, singing performane are organised.
Now that you've experienced Diwali in India, you must visit during "Holi" too, to see the festival of Colors. It's crazy. You can plan on visiting Mathura, Vrindavan and other parts.
I have lot of non Indian friends who visit India for Diwali and sit on top floors of their hotels for the view. You guys are very brave to jump into action. Have more fun here in India.
This is exactly how I felt when I first witnessed Pooram festival in Kerala. Sidenote- I am an Indian and someone who’s pretty used to Diwali. But Pooram fireworks was ear shattering and heart stoppingly loud

Celebration of Deepawali originated in ancient times when Lord Rama returned to his Kingdom (Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh State) after conquering and vanquishing the Demon King Ravana in Lanka. Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya on one of the darkest nights of winter and people of Ayodhya welcomed him with Deeps, rather row of lights and thus the origin of the word Deepawali- which has got corrupted to its shorter version of Diwali.. Other religions celebrate it for various reasons but the core philoposphy is that which is narrated in the epic book Ramayana . If you have time while in Delhi, you can go to Ayodhya and Varanasi and see the essence of HIndusim reflected in day to day lives of people there. Still I am very happy you guys got the profound Immersive effect of Deepawali in Mumbai and the modern day lighting of electrical lights has taken it to a new level. Diwali isn't just a festival of fireworks. It is a multidimensional celebration. Outside you see crackers, when you visit homes you'll see diyas, poojas, rangolis, great food, sweets, and so much more. Everywhere it's different.

You should experience Holi too in India. It's even crazier. Indian festivals especially Hindu festivals gives beautiful experience of their own. Mumbai is also famous for Ganesh Chaturthi. Worth experiencing it too.
I was I old Delhi a few years back for Diwali and it was hands down the most craziest thing I’ve ever experienced. I wanna go back 😊
