This sonata was composed during happy holidays on the countryside with beloved friends. It is interesting to hear how Schubert seems happy when hearing first the sonata but how a more careful listening reveals his "black and white" mood at that time, before his very dark final period. Lupu is an outstanding interpret of these various moods.
Lupu is a poet on the keys. Something about his touch, especially heard in _piano_ sections, makes me feel he’s magically connecting from underneath the keys, while most pianists (obviously) approach from high above them. This sounds weird, but Lupu’s technique and communication with the keys is so unique that it’s weird. It’s not like Gould, who also had a very singular touch and technique which was otherworldly, and Ashkenazy, as well, achieved a poetic connection, something far beyond musicality. Could they manipulate the ways in which the hammer struck the strings in multiple ways??

Fantastic playing. Only the verry GREAT are able to interpret this Sonata so sovereign.
So difficult to play and achieve that effortless extraordinary beauty of that opening theme .
Превосходное исполнение!
2nd movement 😍😍😍

very beautiful, thank you for sharing. The photo looks slightly funny: isn't his head very big relative to his hands? ;-)
