    thanks carl for this. it helped me to find a problem: just a tiny rock inside de axel that was avoiding to srew in the little chain that change the gears. i had to opened all until inside 😅. i learned a lot. thank you

    woah, thanks a lot! im so grateful, near home, theres a bike parts supplier and neither the owner or the manager don't know about their plentiful stock of SA AWC II kits, they offered me that if i manage and figure out how to make them work, i can get the stock at a nice price
    also will help me to know how to work as i wanna improve my grandpas cargo bike without getting into strange or too modernish conversions, so the Sturmey gear hubs are the ideal choice

    If you twist the actuator plate over the pawls then it's easier to get the driver back in.
    Also, I screw the toggle chain back into the axle key and leave it there until I fit the drive side cone. It stops it becoming disorientated during reassembly.

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That usually works. I've found I hate the driver ring bearing(s) since they like to fall off it getting past the pawls and actuator plate.

    A voyage of discovery sent me deep into AW, SRF3 and BSR (NOT BWR) territory. The AW became the SRF3 around the time when the clutch was redesigned. The BSR is the SRF3 more specifically tailored for Brompton. For example, Brompton BSR's are in 28 hole and only have the one possible axle length.

    Thank you for the inspirational video. I am curious how to re-oil the hub after degreasing it. I want to try aft oil and grease in place of the bearings. However, I do not know how much of this oil to use. Maybe you will make another video about hub oiling? :) All the best!

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Many people say to use maybe a teaspoon of oil and re-oil every 100 miles? The oil most say is good is 10w30. I've used 5w30, and even tried automatic transmission fluid. Phil tenacious oil is also used by many but I think it's too sticky. In this video the hub had the sturmey archer stock slippery grease. I applied 00 grease in the other srf3 video and it just seemed like Phil tenacious oil (sticky)

    • @podrugiejstronie7006
      @podrugiejstronie7006 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thatbmxguy Thank you for your response. However, I am a bit worried that I have to refill the oil every 100mil. There is no "oil valve" on my 6 speed Sturmey Archer in Brompton. So I would have to disassemble the hub every 100 miles, which is no longer beneficial for me. Do you have any ideas on how to make the hub work long and effectively?

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The light grease that sturmey archer sells is likely more than fine if you overhaul yearly. Oiling every 100 miles might seem kind of obsessive. It depends if you ride the Brompton 100 miles a week vs 100 miles a month or maybe 100 miles after 100 days.

      Nexus hubs work. Just there are no spare parts. I cannot say parts are easy to find for these hubs also. I'm a thumb shifter fan. Nexus hubs usually have grip shifters.
      The srf3 is hard to find now. I'm unsure why. I do know sun race is making the Sturmey Archer hubs and pushing the rotary shift versions lately. The old AW 40s, 50s, 60s even 70s hubs are always on ebay along with parts for them.

    What could be the problem with the SRF3 if the stick clicks 3 times but I only feel 2 gear changes as if I didn't feel 3 changes - no difference. As if it were a two-speed gear change. Although the lever clicks 3 times, it feels like only 2 times the difference in transmission power.

    • @thatbmxguy

      When its shifted to 1 make sure the hub is spinning when pedal silent with no ticking. If it it isn't silent in 1 on the shifter the cable is out of adjustment.

    Can I set a disc brake on this hub and I want to use on 26 “ wheel ( 4 “ wide )

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not on this hub but there is a S-RK3 that can be spaced close to 110mm wide with narrower cone lock nuts. (I think about 115mm) You may have to still muscle the hub into the frame but 26" frames are easier to flex out then 20".

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The driver bearing has shield holding it in place. You would have to pull the shield off by prying or tapping it off with a dowel. I may make a video on upgrading the hub soon about that.

    You say it'll fit up to 135, but what is the minimum? I'd like to put one of these on a 29" bmx cruiser with 110mm rear spacing.

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This hub fits with the thinnest cone locknut that is 3mm (should be on ebay) and a lock washer on the drive side. A 5mm cone lock nut and wash on the non drive side then should be about 110mm old. I can also squeeze in a simple lolly pop chain tensioner on the drive side too. There's another video of talking about fitting these on bmx bikes.
      As long as the frame is using 3/8 axle slots you should be alright.

    heads up these hubs fail on e bikes.

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe it. ebike riders usually are riding aggressive. I read an article somewhere on recommended internal gear hubs with ebikes. The article was praising 3 speed due to simplicity.

    • @russellwilson5246
      @russellwilson5246 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thatbmxguy yes that article is misleading incorect they also do not shift down under load and this means you have to back of and wait for the motor with its run on to shut down leaving you stalled on the hill...shimano make a 5 speed rated for ebikes any experiance with that one carl?

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have yet to see 3 or 5 speed setup ebikes. I was planning to "play" around with the idea at some point but no extra money. One customer had a cargo trike (2 front wheeled) with a front bin from a company in Europe. It has the Nexus 8 speed on it. The Nexus 8 seems to still handle the cargo trike abuse hauling compost buckets (up to 4 buckets, with a trailer with 70 lbs of dirt in each bucket). (I tried the job and hated it). The main issue was the spokes kept breaking on the rear wheel. Many of the ebikes coming in for tubes or small fixes here seem to to be Radpower rear motor fat bikes or the front motor mini razor scooters. Most of the mid-motor setups I assembled or tuned up (I-zips or Raleigh's) had rear derailleurs with 8 or 9 speeds and didn't seem to have any problems, just normal cassette and chain wear.

    • @thatbmxguy
      @thatbmxguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually it seems the only reason I don't use my nexus 8 is.. well I don't have a frame that works with one. Nothing bmx is 135mm OLD. It seems like the Shimanos are more reliable, then say the Sun made Sturmey Archers. I kind of don't believe 3 gears is enough for a ebike, and hilly roads. regardless. I'm more worried about pawls breaking, and Shimanos, like the 7, 8 and Alfines have one way bearings to clutch vs pawls normally.

    • @B.A.512

      @@thatbmxguy I destroyed an Nexus 8 not so long ago on a non electric bike. Now I ride with the CBE-110 and a SA S1C, but those do not have any gears.
