    Just came out of a 2 day hiking session with the 2019 model of this bag and what i can say... IT IS AWESOME!
    I filled her up all the way and even attached some bags on the outside handles and it stood really well. I literally rolled her up some rocks and dirt and it doesnt have a single scratch, its amazing!

    I’ve had the 2009 version, then the 2015 and now this one. It’s an awesome EDC.

    Just came across your video. Amazing. I have had the 2012 version for many many years and it is now falling apart. I was quite dismayed at the 2021 version and felt so many things esp the pockets - administrative access were gone in the 2021 version, no compression straps et al. But I feel the 2020 version is the best of the old and the new. I had been looking around to replace with the a used older version but perhaps if I find a used 2020 version I might - perhaps go for that. I do greatly enjoy the upgrade for laptop system and tablet in the newer version just wish they would return to the many pockets - administrative options - and bottom pocket that existed in previous versions and put the side compressions back for the 2023 or 2024 version. Thanks again for a great review! Liked and subscribed!

    I love the Surge backpacks .. ever since Surge II, had 2 Surge 3rd editions and this 4thedition in the review .it's been out since 2019 here.. there is one major design flaw on this and looking through the reviews on both this Surge 4 and the similar Router I'm not the only one who has had issue with the shoulder straps. The cut outs on the join with the bag and shoulder straps itself obviously make the support far weaker than previous models. One of mine has broken and seems others have had the same issue. Would be great if TNF sorted it. When I first got the pack i did think it strange having cut outs on the shoulder straps of all places

    I didn't realize but my version is the 2010 version. It is still as good, watching the video shows that they have change it quite substantially in the design to make it more relevant. Good review buddy.

      Agreed they keep getting worse and worse! I have the 2012 version ( th-cam.com/video/mwjgxsxUcYY/w-d-xo.html )
      and only now it is falling apart. And after searching was so dismayed at all the so called improvements when felt they got worse and worse esp for the administrative pockets and such. They improved on the laptop/table section but can easily just buy a case for the older versions. I hope they bring back many of the older features in upcoming versions such as compression side straps. Really loved the extra zipper on the bottom of the 2012 version of the Surge. This 2012 version I have taken many places for travel and all around NYC daily commuter it has withstood. I do like the newer versions having some felt sections esp for cameras and such but not at the expense of the administrative pockets of the old. Looking at this they still could have done a few bits. But I do feel at least the 2020 version is better than the 2021 version. I may still have to look at a few more videos to see if the 2020 model will work for me or look for another used older version...and if any 2020 versions are available online also.

    • @DesmondCheng
      @DesmondCheng  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Based on looking at the specs on the north face website, the router is 41litres, the surge is 31litres. So the surge is smaller!

  • @mr_red13
    @mr_red13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does this have enough *width* *space* for textbooks?
    I had the Router Transit and while it is big, it's mostly big *vertically.* So I would have to stack stuff on top of each other rather than beside each other. I would only fit one textbook and a 3" binder beside each other.

    • @DesmondCheng
      @DesmondCheng  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the width is about the same as the Router Transit and yes you are right that it is bigger VERTICALLY.
      Recently I have been using the Osprey Tropos as my new Everyday Bag and I love it! I'll be doing a review on that one soon

      I have a north face borealis 28l and a Osprey apogee. North face has a bit more organization but the apogee has more room in the main compartment and is lighter. Osprey makes great quality packs and the shoulder straps are more comfortable in my opinion. However the north face laptop pocket seems to be padded better.

    Are these good for hiking and can hold trekking polls? Was looking at this the recon, BOREALIS

    • @DesmondCheng
      @DesmondCheng  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      its ok for hiking... like a few hours or a daytrip is fine, but if u plan on carrying heavier loads, I would suggest an actual hikers backpack! One with a better waistbelt...
      You could tie down the trekking polls with the side straps, but it would dangle quite low unless you really cinch it up
