I think he loves her. She is in pain because she is in an unhappycommitted relation. He loves her but knows she loves someone else. He cant get her outof his mind or heartbut knows she is taken. Thats why he says his hands are tied he cant change the way things are. But wishes she changes her mind end her relationship and comes to him. She has a good relationship like deepfriendship with him. But he wants her to love him

OMG, you are so wrong without knowing it. Please watch many of his other videos about this song, and you will clearly understand the meaning of it: Bono is a man of faith. This song is about Jedus Christ. If you are not a believer, you won't get it. But if you are, a believer, and if you have read the bible, you will know that he is clearly talking about how Jesus gave it all and that how he (Bono) wants more from Jesus.

Hey Dan, thanks for your thoughts. I come from a Christian background and I can see the reference to Jesus in the lyrics and video. Still, there may be more to it given that he mentioned "she" multiple times. Perhaps its a hybrid, where he is comparing this situation to the kind of suffering Jesus went through, but may not be entirely about Jesus himself. Thanks again for your contribution!

@@explainedinenglish Great to hear about your Christian background. "She" in the scripture refers to Jesus's bride, the church; and sometimes, when put in a negative connotation, it can refer to the (troubled) world as well. Hope this helps!

I listened to it again a few times with your interpretation in mind, and you're right that it works that way too. I went through a period where I was listening to many "love songs" and thinking of them in a spiritual context; it can be a beautiful way to bask in love for God. I've read that Bono himself has mentioned it also being about his career and marriage. However, I tend to stick to my personal feelings about a song in these explanations and never claim to have the "truth". People are free to take my opinion or leave it :) I really thank you for pointing this alternative and very beautiful interpretation out.

I don’t disagree with you on the religious aspect of Bono and U2’s music. Bono and the other members of the band, except Adam, are devout christians and tend to put their faith at the center of their music. That being said, they do have some secular and more widely-interpretable songs, and I say this as someone who’s not a christian nor a U2 fan. Bono also says the pronoun ‘She’ many times in the song, so does that mean god is a girl? Lol
