It took me way too long to realize that. He even had a tremendous influence on a song I wrote and I didn't realize it until like ten years later. The guy's totally original, nobody else sounds like him.

Mind blown similar to the video of Dave Grohl telling Pharrell Williams how the drum flam at the beginning of Smells Like Teen Spirit and the entire Nevermind album is originally from The Gap Band and Cameo.
Lucky buggers, Johnny Marr is such an amazing guy to sit and listen to. He speaks music to people who don't read music, like musical stories in a foreign language that you can understand.

and rhythmic understanding goes without saying.
My favourite kind of guitar player. Playing a million notes a minute has its place, and I like and respect those players, but i much prefer those players who focus on the rhythmic side. Adam Jones from Tool is another example.
Says a lot that he was in a band with an iconic singer frontman and yet his guitar is talked about equally to if not more than Morrissey.
Watch him just get into a groove and pass into another world about 50 seconds in. Brilliant.
Listening to Johnny Marr speak and hearing him speak of his process, it just gives me goosebumps! It's funny how I can become emotional over something like this! Maybe it's the fact that I am 58-years old and I have been of fan of Johnny Marr and The Smiths since 1984. This man is not only an amazing guitarist, but also an incredible lyricist. I have tried to pattern my own guitar playing around Johnny's style. Man, I am in awe of this amazing, amazing artist!

how is Johnny Marr underrated lol. You do know that the guitar on this video is his own signature model that goes for like 2500 USD. Getting an american Fender made after you is like the peak of success in term of guitar players.

Fascinating. How Soon is Now is the single greatest song of the 1980s in my opinion. There are a lot of videos of McCartney doing this too, where he downplays his genius to make it sound like they just put a couple of chords and beats together and wa-la, we have a masterpiece.

Johnny Marr is the reason why I listened to the smiths for a long time since I was in school and now I'm 43 years old this year lol
I knew all these years that the opening riff with the tremolo for "How Soon Is Now" came from the legendary Bo Diddley.
He said somewhere that it also was inspired by The Gun Club..
"No one can play guitar like Johnny Marr,...Not even Johnny Marr can play like Johnny Marr",.....
I have to say as soon as he started playing I was like “that’s Bo Didlely.”

I once heard that there is so much layering of guitars and reverbs on the final album cut that it was a complete nightmare for the band to try to recreate the sound live.
Those guitarist interviews usually bore me but his unique take on the guitar and his storytelling is entertaining.

How I’ve seen it played in cover bands and in Johnny’s band is a slide from the 14th to 13th frets, with the b string tuned down to b flat and lots of effects over it.
