    I bought the version 1 about 6 weeks ago and returned it after a week because it wasn't fast enough shooting video for focus. The version 2 is amazing! It's lightning fast. I use it for video and photos on my A7s3 and A74. Highly recommended lens.

      @@mattstolzman I can't compare to a brand or lens I don't own. What I can tell you is that it's a noticeable update from the Mark 1 as the autofocus is ultra fast.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don’t know what swindled is supposed to mean. Sure, the GMs are more expensive - but they’re also much, much better lenses than the Samyang versions. The built quality and pro services alone are worth the premium for a professional shooter and the af is much more reliable in difficult conditions. Sure, for a hobbyist they’re overkill, but you definitely get what you pay for if you properly utilise the advantages that the GMs offer.

    • @keystonebrotherb
      @keystonebrotherb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@youknowwho9247
      Right. I am a hobbyist so having the name brand isn’t important to me, it’s just getting a good shot. I feel like I can get 95% out of the Samyang for 1/3 of the money. To me that’s a bargain. I can afford any lens that I want. I choose to buy value. These are really good lenses. They’re only getting better and better with each release.

    • @keystonebrotherb
      @keystonebrotherb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I chose the Tamron Trio of zooms for the same reason. Excellent value.

      Yep I agree, lenses and gear in general is getting so good nowadays that something more budget friendly like this or Sigma lenses are totally good enough to do great job most of the time!

      Nobody puts out a bad lens anymore. How many Sony 10-18 lenses have dropped in the last two years? Samyang, Tamron, Laowa, Sigma, even 7artisans put out quality for the market! Sony has a goldmine opening their mount to 3rd party sources and I’m happy.

    Seems like a decent budget option for hobbyists who can’t afford the Sigma and aren’t willing to step down to f/1.8. Obviously neither of them can hold a candle to the GM, but that’s to be expected given the price difference.

    • @robertcudlipp3426
      @robertcudlipp3426 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sounds like a huge bias in favour of the GM glass, good, yes, but not that great and the price.
      For most people, this way better value for money lens is all that is needed, the pros have a range of choices.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertcudlipp3426 There's no bias. I've tested so, so many options when I switched from Nikon to Sony and would have loved to be able to go with all third party glass, for budget reasons. Many of them are great optically, but none of them come close to matching the GM versions in reliability. Sony's pro offerings are most definitely worth the extra money for anyone who has to get the shot the first time (wedding photographer here).

    • @sharpshotzbestdestinationw6028
      @sharpshotzbestdestinationw6028 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huge Bias Definitely..
      I own most of the G-master lenses,Sigma art Primes and Samyang new Lenses.
      Samyang is doing a great job and at Some focal lengths is much better.For eg. 85mm mkii is way better than 85mm GM when it comes to bokeh and autofocus as well.The Sigma Art 85Dg dn is neck to neck with GM but has a better build and that Made in Japan thing doesn’t give u a sense of reliability??
      I am happy that new lens from third party manufacturers are getting reliable and kudos to Sony for truly being an open system.

    Thanks for the video Julia. I think, I'm going to switch to Rokinon/Samyang... I own the Sony 35 GM and although it's an amazing photo lens, I shoot a lot of video content and I think the Samyang is the true hybrid (with its almost zero focus breathing). Would you say the 1.4 has a "much better" performance over their tiny but almighty 1.8 compact? I own the compact 24 f1.8 and that's a great video lens too (no focus breathing either).

    First, it is just a minor update of the Mk1 version, it have no real aperture ring, it is larger and heavier than the Sony 35mm 1.4 GM, the Samyang do not have so good autofocus as the Sony and the image quality are lower than the Sony 35mm 1.8 !!!. Do you need aperture 1.4 and autofocus ??? I got the excellent Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical which have just as good image quality as the Sony and the Voigtländer are much lighter and compact and built as a tank, I can very highly recommend the Voigtländer Lens !

      hmm. what do you mean by live view? It is a term used in dslr for lcd display? In Sony MILC cameras you have "live view" on the back display and on the electronic view finder...
      Personally I prefer to use EVF because it is giving a more stable position and also it is easier during sunny days.

    • @Jabber-ig3iw
      @Jabber-ig3iw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without wanting to speak for the photographer here, using the rear screen is a good technique on a mirror less camera which have none of the disadvantages you would get doing the same on a DSLR, it enables you to keep an overall view of the scene rather than looking down the tunnel of the viewfinder, you can use your peripheral vision to keep an eye on what the light is doing, is someone about to walk into shot, you could spot a better position or backdrop you may not see if you are glued to the viewfinder.

    I’ll never use Samyang lenses again. Twice I’ve contacted Samyang to ask if the 24mm and 35 v2 has a yellow cast like the older models and twice they have read the messages and ignored it. If they can’t be bothered to answer a question I won’t buy their lenses. I got rid of the 35 v1 and 85 and just replaced the entire lot with Sigma Art lenses

I feel like it's not that obvious on it's own but you can see it in my comparison videos such as my 135mm comparison between the Samyang, GM and Sigma. I personally like it though lol it really suits my style of portrait photography

      Nikon often have heavier yellow casts on the sensor compared to Sony and Canon. Its interesting what you say but sometimes this is why its worth trying out different lenses. Plus ensure the camera profile settings on your camera are correct. My Nikon d750 had a wonderful VIVID colour profile albeit had to tone down saturation by a few dots at times. Enjoy your photography with your Art lenses 🙏
