    When Dick Rutan was flight testing the Voyager, prior to the world flight, he flew into the extreme edge of a light rainfall. The (forward) canard immediately lost lift, causing the Voyager to pitch down. Dick instantly rolled away from the rain, and recovered full control as the rain on the canard dried up. I then built a simple wooden fixture, which I used to align and affix a couple of hundred small fiberglass vortex generators. These helped keep the canard's airflow "attached" to the canard. The world flight had to fly through rain, often in pitch darkness, many times.
    What you see in this video is a series of dual vortex generators on the canard. (Sadly, the vortex generators on the Voyager are in a position in the Smithsonian where the generators cannot be seen.)

    I miss my Long EZ. It was so beautiful and well built that when folks asked me if I built it I had to bite my tongue hard so as not to lie, LOL. JK. When I see this kind of video, I feel sad that I can no longer fly. To me flying felt like true freedom!

    There is yellow paint on the wing and Canard, but if you are looking at the canard you probably are seeing the Vortex Generators. I added them for improvement in rain -pitch control to adjust the laminar flow. They worked.

      @@martinhulme2846 What's "the rain pitch issue"?

    • @zolotiyeruki
      @zolotiyeruki 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@landen99 The original GU canard on the Long-EZ required a pitch change in rain or with too much contamination from bugs. The later plans used a different Roncz canard which tolerated those conditions without a need for pitch trim.

    They replaced it with another Drift but the newer, smaller Drift HD cam. It has worked fine since, I uploaded the first video today.

    I see you mounted the Zaon in the “Head up Display” position in the nose of the canopy. I mounted my 496 there, until I got to thinking how it would mash by face in the event of a sudden stop accident. I dont need to be made any uglier, so I removed anything from that location.

    I had a few memory problems until I started formatting my memory cards with a tool on my PC (SD Formatter). It is also good to use at least class 4 memory but I have used class 2 with success so far.
    I was going to purchase the Drift HD170 for mounting outside my aircraft (because of the remote control capability) but maybe I'll rethink that if the quality is not there. Let me know if you resolve your issue. I'm interested.

    This is an older video. I have remade the panel a few times as deficiencies make themselves known. You can make the panel in any form you like, they are all individual. Mine used a Dynon D100 main flight display, with standard engine gauges. You can go all Dynon, , inc the newer display with engine and GPS maps. The G1000 might be a little big and deep in the panel. Space is a premium.
    I don'd have a HUD, just a HD cam mounted to the headset.
    If you mean the HUD from the other videos, there is a link/info on the video. "DASHWARE" Used a seperate data logger. Joined on the computer.

    Drift HD170. I had two and both failed after a few uses. They are sending a third, newer style under warrenty. I use SDHC 16GB Sony cards.

    The best video sequence I have seen on you tube for a Long EZ, Martin. I could hear that you were in the US. Did I here it was Deland, north of Orlando? I am looking to buy one of these in the UK. Regards

    I'm thinking of building a long ez. I really like the fighter plane style panel behind the throttle in your plane, I think I'll do something similar.
    Do you think the panel is large enough for a 7" screen and a garmin 430? (my aircraft will be slightly widened too.

    • @EatPezzzz
      @EatPezzzz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Large enough for a vertical 7" screen, a 430 as well as a stack of other stuff, 2, 3 1/8" gauges, and a handful of switches.

    Interesting VG kit on the canard.. is that to delay stall on the canard? Happy Landings!

    WoW that cockpit looks verry nice!! I am considering to buy a Long EZ to but I have some question and I know you'll be able to answer them if you want to. First of all, is your instrument panel a kit or did you bought every single part separate? Are you capabel to die a G1000 in this kind of plane or aren't you? And my last question: where do you have that HUD from??? It looks so cool!! I want it to but how do you sync it with your instruments and where did you get it from? I really want the same cockpit though... Yours is inspiring me to build the same one only i need some professional help from you.. I would really appreciate it if you would like to help me!!! Kind regards, Benjamin Coussement

      You would never put a G1000 in an LongEZ. The LongEZ is experimental and can take uncertified avionics, such as Dynon, Garmin G3X etc. The G1000 is a certified unit and would cost the same as around 2 complete LongEZ aircraft!

      Most Long-EZs have wheelpants, suitable only for hard surface runways. I never flew my EZ without wheelpants, after the initial flight tests.

    how hot does it get in the cockpit?

    • @gmcjetpilot
      @gmcjetpilot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is why he taxis with canopy open. In flight with air vent open, especially when you climb to cruise altitude (if going somewhere) temp drops about 3.3°F for every 1,000 feet you go up in elevation. So at 10,000' it is 33F lower. 90F on ground is a nice 67F at altitude. That is pretty comfortable even in summer. As far as direct sunlight, people put stick on sun sades or films on canopy. Hat, long sleeve shirt sun screen are in order for long flights.

    A little overkill with VG’s?

    • @unkelartgarf3792
      @unkelartgarf3792 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at all. LongEZ really benefits from them. Low horsepower, low weight is a good receipe for significant improvements from VGs, especially with no flaps.
