Stay Cool Outdoors in Extreme Heat, part 1

- This video provides advice on how to stay cool when hiking or camping in extreme heat. It is based on my lifetime experience growing up near the Mojave Desert in Southern California, and years later living next to a bayou in East Texas.
I have divided the video into two parts:
PART ONE: Lists all tips, and explains only the first two in detail
PART TWO: Lists all tips, and explains the remaining five in detail
1. ACCLIMATE TO EXTREME HEAT. Allow your body’s physiology several days to slowly adjust to extreme heat. The physiological changes during the adjustment period are critical for survival.
2. USE MICROCLIMATES TO STAY COOL. Weather Channels only report conditions in a standard way, 5 feet off the ground in the shade. Reality is much, much different.
3. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER BEFORE YOU ARE THIRSTY. According to the National Institute for Safety and Health, in extreme heat people should drink 8 ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes.
4. LIMIT ACTIVITY DURING THE HEAT OF THE DAY. Like wildlife, seek shelter when it is too hot. Day-active wildlife become much more active at dawn and dusk. Some day-active wildlife become entirely night active in extreme heat. Hot weather provides a perfect opportunity for night hiking and camping in the rain.
5. WEAR CLOTHING THAT PROTECTS YOUR BODY FROM HEAT. Light-colored, loose clothing, with air spaces between you and the cloth, allows sweat evaporation and cooling. Dark clothing also have advantages...
6. PROTECT FROM SUNBURN AND BUG BITES. Chemicals in sunscreen and bug repellents interact. Use sunscreens only on exposed skin and bug repellents only on clothing. I will also demonstrate tips from the 1800s.
7. And finally, I will demonstrate several YOGA BREATHING TECHNIQUES that will help you RELAX, LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE, AND COOL your body.

It's good to see ken back
Thanks
Ken, your videos bring a calm and peacefulness to my otherwise hectic and stressful life. I find it very cathartic. Thank you man of serenity.
You are very welcome
Hi Ken,
When hiking in the desert, our dog Always digs a small impression to lie down in. 😁
Of course, your dog knows how to stay cool. Thumbs up my friend
I'm an avid outdoors senior with a congenital syndrome, so I don't sweat! I always try to be near water to cool off in, and I noticed some places on my new land/camping spot are so much cooler. Thanks for this information. If I can't be in a hammock over some water, watching you do it is the next best thing! Love it! Stay well, June R. (I hiked to the outlook with you and the group at Big South Fork many moons ago). Peace.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay cool my friend
Glad to see that you could get out in your wild spot and have a good time.
Please be very careful as you ramble and roam around.
We'll be needing to watch your
new videos for more years to come
Thanks again
Thank you, I will
Excellent and timely tips. Good to see you out having fun by the crystal clear water.
Hi Mark. Thanks for watching and commenting Take care and enjoy the moment..... ken
Nature’s masterpiece🦋🐝🌊
Oh yes, nothing better!
I haven’t seen you for awhile. Glad to see you out roaming around and spreading your unique brand knowledge and harmony. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Ciao for now.
I'm back. Making these videos reminds me of the 1970s when I was a college professor at Michigan Tech. I love learning about nature and sharing with others. Take care, ken
Great video , Ken ! Good to see you out and looking so good .
Thank you for watching and taking time to comment. Peace…
min 19.08 ur good
Very good! Comprehensive, and succinct! I will be using this video for my trail maintenance crews! Thank you for putting into a venue they'll understand throughout the education levels.
Thank you for commenting
Glad it was helpful!
It was a bit more than helpful! As stated, I am a Trailboss for my county, and lead crews into our county's Parks and Preserves...here in West Central Florida. As we have had a big influx of new workers we are required to watch for "heat Index" and sometimes can't do the task. This helps me to help them prepare beforehand to handle the heat here better!
Your back buddy! ❤
Yes sir
Another “cool” Ken video 😎 Very timely too as it is hot out there! ☀️ 🥵
Glad you enjoyed it
glad to see you again with your unique style
Yes, I'm back. Thanks for watching and comment. Making these videos reminds me of the 1970s when I was a college professor. Take care, ken
Great information for those not in the know. Beautiful area, thank you, sir, for sharing with us!
Stay safe with Hillary heading north!
You bet
Ken I have slowly gathered gear, 8 ten years. My base. Is heavy shower curtain. With a camo boy scout tent. And a camo tarp lay under wrap over top for shade rain flap. We found Mimi folding shovels. Like military only smaller in pouch screw together handle. Figured dig trench any water run off not under. And I've watched a million videos. -0 farrenhart sleeping bag. Mats,,, I can't carry weight. So bicycle, moter cycle, jeep. Can't go without. You have no idea how much I love your video s. Please get better soon. I'm set for stealth but just packed n ready.
Go stealth my friend. My days of primitive stealth hiking are gone. Sweet memories. Go for and enjoy…
Fabulous stuff as usual Dr. Ken. Careful on those river walks. A sprained ankle can be serious business. I think you have already covered this subject though.
Thank you, I will
Great to see you Ken. The Houston area misses you.
Thank you. I also miss Texas…
Great video 👍. I learn a lot.. Thanks for sharing this with us. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
It's always great to see you still kicking
Can’t keep me down😊
Thank you Ken! This was basically a mini graduate course!
Glad it was helpful! You probably guess that many years ago I was a college professor
@@KennethKramm No, your ego doesn't have it's own orbit.
Lovely waters 😊
They are!
awesome video! keep on keepin on my friend
Smiling! Thanks for watching
Are you camping during the hurricane! A few years ago, my friend bob Outdoors and I experienced a flash flood .. tropical storm.. we loved it. Took shelter in a bird blind. Stay safe
As well as H2O you need to monitor your salt loss - a pinch of salt with your water intake will help prevent cramps too.
Absolutely correct. That point will be included in the next episode. I tell my wife, that I can salt my food as much as I want, if I've been outside enjoy our wonderfully warm climate.
Kenny!
Yes.... I'm enjoying the wonder and awe of the natural world .... tranquility.... peace...
Sounds like good advice. Thank you
Any time!
Fairly warm here today

Ken how you doing thanks for another great video cheers from Texas
Thanks 👍
ken the stealthn outdoor guru job done
Thank you
Ken. I’ve been hoping you would return!
Thank you 🎉
thank you for your video. A biology question, how can an animal unable to sweat (anhydrosis)? can sweat again. I could not figure out .
I am not sure that I understand the question. Animals that don’t have sweat glands to cool down. Birds for example cool of by evaporative fluttering old open mouths, or in come cases (vultures by releaasing fluids (peep/ poop) on ther feet). Evaporative cooling can happen without sweat glands). Rodents do not have sweat glands and cool off moving around to places were it is cooler than their body temperature. They walk in water and cool off by evaporation on that water
I meant a horse that suffer anhidrosis , does not sweat, due to hot environment,
which would be your approach.@@KennethKramm
All the many videos you have done, what was your favorite?
That’s hard to say. My videos on survival and stealth camping … resulted in comments from veterans who were trying to come to terms with life in civilian world… where I some individuals discovered a purpose for stealing and survival camping outside of war. My videos provided calming thoughts and peace.
Yay!
Thank you
It seems like I have to acclimate back to the cold, when the season changes.
I put some potassium salt, plus a little sodium chloride in my water bottles. I also take magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium.
I get calcium from food.
Acclimating works for all environmental changes. Years ago when I was a professor , we did many experiments demonstrating the acceleration to low temperatures is extremely important to performance and survival
Ken should do ASMR
Ken, hope you are not going to be negatively impacted by hurricane Hillary.
We survived the storm. Very interesting…California folks are acting as if this is a huge disaster. .. and it is, sine the are usually very dry.. and infrastructure is not designed for heavy rainstorms. However, it was nothing compered to the hurricanes we experienced every year on the Gulf Coast of Texas.
It was fun to see frogs
Jumping everywhere. They came out of estivation ( underground Similar to hibernation).
Thanks. We’re doing great. Sun has returned. 😅
