    true story: I (briefly) dated a girl who loved MGK. She said Bloody Valentine was "our song"... don't know what made her think that. it's like she didn't even realize that the song was about a guy trapped in a toxic, unstable relationship. or, she did realize that, and tried to use this song to justify it.

    it's crazy how at literally every level of pop punk you find music that is higher quality than anything MGK has ever made.
    -surface level mainstream pop punk like Blink 182, MCR, and Paramore all have GOAT hit songs and albums.
    -dig a little deeper and you'll find more scene classics from The Story So Far, Four Year Strong, New Found Glory.
    -look into the modern scene and you find amazing revival artists like Spanish Love Songs, Jeff Rosenstock, and PUP.
    -go back all the way to the 90s and you got your early emo tinged legends like Jawbreaker and The Get Up Kids and Jimmy Eat World.
    it is SO easy to find pop punk that is objectively better in nearly every facet, better songwriting, choruses, riffs, mixing and production, that also isn't made by a narcissistic pedo poser pretending to be punk by riding a trend while also being worse than all his contemporaries, even Avril Lavigne and Olivia Rodrigo and fucking Willow Smith are making better pop punk in the 2020s
    i avoid being an elitist prick usually but the ONLY excuse for liking MGK is that you haven't listened to better music

    • @JohnDarksoul69
      @JohnDarksoul69 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      i guess the one positive thing about his music is that it's probably a gateway to better music if you know what i mean... case in point, my girlfriend used to say she didn't like rock until she listened to MGK and starting digging the sound. i then proceeded to introduce other bands to her and currently she doesn't very much enjoy his generic music anymore and is now listening to actual good pop punk and even other rock bands in general. i can see a lot of people heading in the same direction in the near future, or so i hope

    Hey Brad, sorry you had to go through that.
    If you have a moment, have a listen to some of Taylor Hawkins stuff, "Cold Day in the Sun" and "Sunday Rain" (Foo Fighters), "Range Rover Bitch" and "Tokyo No No" (Taylor Hawkins), and some of the Sound City Album songs, just to name a couple tracks that he's sung (and played) on. There are also multiple videos of his last concert with a performance of Queen's "Somebody to Love" if you are strong enough to not cry while watching along.
    I hope you and anyone else have been able to cope if you got hit hard by his passing. I know I have, but I will make some changes now to get my life going better.
    Stay safe, brother - DK.

    i honest to god believe that tickets to my downfall is a solid album. mainstream sellout is at least named appropriately cause it sure sounds like it compared to the last one
    if you compare the lyricism between ttmd and ms i promise you'll see where i'm coming from, by no means is ttmd a masterpiece but with songs like lonely and play this when i'm gone you can tell he cares a lot more about what he's doing
    if you want a good pop punk album, why not listen to what mgk is copying? enema of the state by blink-182 is an incredible album and mgk will never live up to it ever.

    If you want a good follow this up, Paramore's debut album All We Know Is Falling would be a great example of 2000s pop punk that isn't dated. The chunky guitar tones make the riffs go hard, the song structures manage to be catchy while shaking themselves up and not getting old, and it'll be an oasis of singing that doesn't suck unwashed balls
