    I had the fortunate of meeting this man IN PERSON at Daddy Kool Records in Soho, London in the early noughties. I knew I was in the presence of greatness, but he was so humble, didn't act the big star, and he was still in contact with Coxsone Dodd, who was still alive that time. A huge, huge legend who is still sorely missed.

    I discovered ska, rocksteady and reggae music through the British-based "Two-Tone" movement in 1980 (when I was 14) . A few years later I started collecting the original Jamaican records including Alton Ellis's fabulous tracks like "Dance Crasher", "The Preacher" and "Cry Tough". Rest in power Alton Ellis!

    Alton Ellis was a tremendous and unique talent, of the upper eschelon of reggae greats who made an indelible stamp on the genre, and in fact was one of its founders. Sadly, despite his healthful appearance and optimistic outlook at the time of this interview (if the date posted is when the interview took place), he would pass just over one month later on October, 10 2008.

    On a side note, the doctor must have stretched the truth to him to make him feel hopeful. My mom died of multiple myleoma in relatively short order. There is no way the facts back up 50% of patients surviving. It also spreads through the bone. It is not contained. But that is a separate topic for another day. Blessings to his fam and living supporters of his music.

    One of the first internationally recognize rock-steady/ reggae songs was, Get ready, come do rocksteady, you've to do it right, like uncle Freddy,,, BY ALTON ELLIS, who remember that song? apart from recording a with Coxone he had quite a fine body of work with Duke Reid too, I'm very upset when I go to even Jamaican Hotels and all they play is Bob Marley, when they are so many other good singers from that era,, dem also stereo typing the genre by making the Marleys win reggae Grammy every Year,, I didn't want to say this, but I often wonder if this has anything to do with skin color,

    • @knowledgeincrease3326
      @knowledgeincrease3326 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possible skin tone may be partly a reason even tho not that significant of a reason in my opinion.
      I more so focus on the bigger picture where our people need to be more actively involved on the business level of the music industry so we can make the decisions and own distribution companies. We have all the talent but other races control our own art and culture. Why is it we can not have our own music hall of fame whether foreign or locally. Reggae artist have been robbed of their talent and hard work and received little compensation for it over decades . Not forgetting soul legends also in the USA that set the pace for newer artists today .
