Started putting blankets, bareback pads, small children’s saddles on my girl at a very young age. Started with blankets and towels when she was a foal and added small amounts of weight as she grew up. A synthetic child’s English saddle is not heavy so she had that put on her by the time she was a yearling. Added the girth at around 1.5 years to two. We put her under saddle officially at four. By that time she was used to saddles and such on her. Her first time working with a saddle was anti climatic because she had had all that done growing up. Her first ride was anti climatic as well. She didn’t buck or run. She just walked, did a circle, went over a bridge, and stopped. When you mess with them as foals and continue to do so, it makes it so much easier. Our main focus when she was a foal, was to just get her used to the grooming routine and introduce her to various everyday items. She’s a very confident horse and is seven now.

yes, thats the way it works. Same with my horse, got him as a young stallion, walked him like a dog for years, out in the forrests. We had some disagreements like "Do we cross that puddle" or stuff like that, or some jumping around like crazy - but thats just because young animals act like this, its normal, its not "nasty" or rude, they have to learn it. Like staying calm while a big noisy truck passes... one caught us on the way home in a narrow road. Horsy got very high and short and showed piaffe movements, his eyeballs nearly falling out, what a sight to see... me trembling but talking to him: "Easy, such a biiig stallion like you and such a ridiculous old truck..." Truck passed, horse piaffed on due to the praise I gave him. LOL. He was the safest horse ever in any kind of traffic situation: Bikes, mashines, trucks, crossing the Autobahn on a bridge... felt creepy for me but he stayed perfectly calm near a road or outside. Lucky me.
Some fuss started when he was 5 - he grew muscles and balance and wanted to have FUN. Just trodding along wasn't enough any longer. So he started bucking a bit just to tell us all: Hey, I feel sooo GOOOD. Had to work a while on THAT, though... to make him cut the crap. Lost me once or twice in the process but never ran home without me.

I am so amazed at how she has him trained so well with the noises she makes especially when she stops him

Would there be a benefit (or difference) in using a bareback pad first so that they get used to the sensation of a girth? Bareback pads are a lot easier to replace than a saddle if things go wrong like if it ends up going under their belly.

Yes, a bareback pad is a great idea! I’ve done this before but I don’t currently own one. For the past few years I have just been using a cheap or kids saddle. In this video I used my expensive saddle 😂 But as you can see, everything went fine, as I knew it would.

@@DeannaThompsonCorby yes, and why not with a well trained, well behaved horse? :)

Thats a great idea. Im starting a new 2 year old who is very sensitive and I dont want anything to upset the process.

I personally disagree with this process.. it is rushed.. if you broke it down into smaller pieces so that he gets used to the saddle rather than having him buck it out.. I've not had a horse buck with the first weeks saddle work.. I've also been able to start with a few very young..
