    Nice simple how-to.
    My mother used to do some stain glass when I was younger. That cutter on glass is like fingers on a chalkboard.

      Make Crazydays Yeah, the sound isn't what you'd expect with a little roller on glass. It's interesting how well a little score mark really works though.

    I took a small chunk out just above my wrist two days ago doing the score and snap method with your hands. Be very careful with that way folks, if youre a noob like me and trying to snap a small bit of glass, absolutely do NOT bend your wrist and put your body weight on it. If it had cut me a quarter inch deeper or lower...would of been bad.
    Edit: Thank you for this video! Much better instruction than the ones I watched before.

    I will try these tips, I've cut several pieces of glass now and every time has been a fail, I've either cracked the glass or it doesn't break off where I cut it and it's so frustrating. I cut tile day in and day out but for the freaking life of me I cannot get glass to cut, I've been trying to cut it at a curve though, straight is no problem but trying to cut a circle of glass is just beyond my capabilities

    Trying to get some info on cutting 4 ft X 1ft pieces of glass and how to do it safely .The glass is for a fish tank canopy top to control evaporation and doesn't have to be tempered glass . I'm just leery about cutting such a long piece of glass . I cut a 3 foot piece before and it broke the main part I wanted to save . Not sure what happened or why it did this considering the fact that I used caution and did exactly the same thing as what was shown . I used a straight edge and kept it secure and used a towel under the glass etc . I suspect that I applied pressure on the wrong spot when I went to break off the section or used uneven pressure along the score line .

    Day 2- still not working. Up till 1.30 in the morning and now I’m salvaging all the glass I can find. Glaziers are shut so got to do it myself. What’s the issue here? Why is every piece of glass not working ???? Tried well over 15 cuts just like you describe but doesn’t work.

    If you want your cutter to last more than just a few short cuts, you should lubricate the wheel. Kerosene or lamp oil is suitable without having to buy special oil.

    the ball on the end of the tool is for tapping along the line that you just scored! it's not for breaking the glass off.
    tapping along the line you score helps create micro cracks along the line so you can ensure it will break evenly! super useful tip

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well yes, but... it shows that MrDiyDork doesn't know what he's talking about here! He's very long winded, and we don't need to know, for example 4:41 that "a lot of people will just take it in their hands..." We don't need to know the wrong way to do it. It sounds like a "strawman fallacy" anyways. Who are these "a lot of people"? Are you really looking up the statistics, or going out doing research on how many people incorrectly break glass after cutting? No, you didn't! And if a simple demonstration without the verbiage seems like it would be too short for a video, you could do third, fourth, fifth and sixth cuts, etc., being more leisurely, making jokes about unfashionable eye glasses or whatever extraneous information you want to share, as you continue to make cuts. This video is all dork, very little DIY!

      I think I paid $12 or $14 for the one he's using at Home Depot appx 3 yrs ago.
      I haven't cut a single pane successfully,.with this cutter. I end up with multiple pieces & a scalloped edge. I had a cutter just like this years ago & never a problem. This one I've trashed 5 pieces of glass. I can't break it with my hands OR by tapping with the ball end. I only needed to tap once using my previous cutter. Consistently had a perfect line. I even tried adding a line of baby oil prior to scoring the glass last time, no luck.
      I'm starting to believe I have a bad cutter...if that's possible.

    Great video! I was originally going to have a local glass cutting place make several cuts I needed, but they were very expensive at $8-10 per cut. I think I can do better by getting a large sheet of glass and cutting what I need to out of it. One question I had though, what do recommend for polishing the edges of the glass to make them look nicer and less sharp? Will sandpaper work for that or is there something better / nicer looking?

    I used a 1/4 piece of trim that i was gonna put around the window to help snap the glass piece off. Bad idea. Since the trim was square, the glass was touching two points instead of one if i had used a dowel. I learned that by messing up 2- $28 sheets of glass.
    *Use Dowel to snap glass

    Ok if you never done this before just stop, go to a shop and have it cut professionaly. It will be cheaper in the long run. If you still want to do it then I'll recommend to buy a bunch of extra glass and practice. You will destroy most of it before you can do it right. It looks easy on video then it actually is.

  • @ansv3340
    @ansv3340 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    that ball is not for that you showed. )) when you are cutting thick glass. 1/4" you cannot snap it as easy. so you do this. after you run your cutter and have your score line. you slide the glass over the edge of the table and tap with that ball from the bottom of the glass. right into the score line, and you will see how score line is starting to crack thru the glass. then you grab with your hands and break it off.
