I just grabbed an Optiplex G1 from the recycling at work before almost being scrapped, in great shape and making sure to preserve it which I know many people do not understand is why many of us collect and enjoy older systems :) Can't wait to see that system all cleaned up!

I Remember disassembling many of those old Compaq rigs back in the days at electronics recycling... Those old HDDs were so loud :) I still have couple of newer Caviar drives somewhere.

Wow. This is the same model of Compaq that my was my families first PC back in 97/98. It became my first PC when my parents bought a new PC a couple of years later. That thing was a an awesome PC.

Oh that slot riser. I had a Vectra VL once that I upgraded that on. From 3x ISA 2xPCI to 2x ISA 3xPCI to connect a graphics card, a 100MBps Ethernet card and a sound card... I loved that machine.

Compaq DeskPros are amazing. I have a Deskpro EN SFF and still use it today for stuff that needs real RS232 and PS/2. It has never missed a sing beat in its life, it even has a way overspeed processor in it and is full of SATA and USB PCI cards and it gives no shits, just keeps on running day after day.

The 590 was the first Pentium machine I ever owned. I got it remarkably cheap from Ebay through a Dutch auction (first time I ever encountered one of those, too). Paid with a money order, back before Paypal was hardly even a thing. It was definitely a heavy-duty machine, but my case lid was a bit of a beast to get properly back into place, and earned itself many a swear.
I overclocked the 90mhz cpu to 120mhz, which didn't seem to cause any problems, though I was afraid of reducing the lifespan so I found myself clocking it back down to normal during long periods of time where I just didn't need the speed. I think I ran that machine with a Matrox Millenium video card, possibly a Matrox Millenium II as well but that might have been a later machine.
It was the first machine I had that could actually play MP3s in Windows properly, too, as funny as that might sound. Previously I could play them in full quality with mpxplay in DOS, and then in reduced quality in Windows with another simple player that I can't remember the name of. So that was a big deal at the time!

That letters folder, had a date of 2/5/10, so this computer had to have been used for something or had the files transferred off since the folder was empty.
Lovely video, these old machines are awesome!

    Its beautiful. I love 1990 - 2000 computers SO much. I got my first PC in 1994..a desktop.....and I love that era. I think in 1997 I was sporting a $250 850 MEG HD :P
Also I still have a working 17" Sony Trinitron. I stopped using it in 2007 when I got my first LCD...I have it though...still want to build a circa 1999 PC for old DOS games..I have my whole collection still.

hi brendon. yes, started off here in the UK back in the day with AOL. like you say it was a great place to be. the design was very nice, i was new the web then, or though i have had a computer since 1982, not the same one. lol i got it separately with windows xp. it was a kind of pretty looking. in these day of google search engines, it's not the same, but there you go. stay well

August 24 of this year, I went to the thrift store and just bought for 10 us dollars an HP Pavilion 7410P. I am planing to throw a a 3Dfx Voodoo 1 in it. I currently have a ATI 3D Rage Pro coming in the mail.
Estimated Price Range: $899 to $3,550 US Dollars
    Basic Specs
    _____________________________
    Chipset: Intel i430HX Chipset
Motherboard: Intel Ruby RU430HX [Proprietary Computer Case Specific Socket 7 Motherboard]
CPU Type: Has either Intel Pentium Classic [The A80502120, A80502133, A80502150, A80502166 and A80502200 were used on this series of PC. These systems seem to have mostly come originally with Pentium Classic and later offered with Pentium MMX versions.] or Intel Pentium with MMX Technology [I think the A80503166 and A80503200 were the Pentium MMX processors that came with these machines]
Max Memory (Able to Take): 128 MB (4 sticks of 32 MB) EDO SIMM NON Parity but I think that they might be able to pull off 512 MB
Max Hard Disk Drive Capacity Support: 8 GB
    AGP Slot: None
Max Amount of PCI Slots: 2
Max Amount of ISA Slots: 5
    Hard Drive Type: Quantum Bigfoot
Onboard Graphics: S3 Virge Chipset with 2 MB of VRAM [I would recommend either the NVIDIA RIVA 128 PCI or the ATI 3D Rage Pro PCI if the 3Dfx Voodoo 1 cannot be obtained and even if you do get a 3Dfx Voodoo 1 then I still recommend either of these]
Onboard Sound: Yamaha OPL3-SA [This supports Sound Blaster Pro 2.0]
Modem Card: Pavilion PC Lucent Modem
Ethernet LAN Card: None [You will have to add one in. I recommend an LAN card that uses the ISA Bus]

I have one Compaq computer, and the first time I powered it up the harddrive (WD Caviar, of course) sounded EXACTLY like it has Click of death. But, it tried to boot, so I let that do its job, after loooooong time it booted Windows 98, and for the lols I tried to run Scandisk. What do you know! Scandisk fixed the clicking noise and the harddrive started working healthly once again!

I really can't see this as being from 1997. Isn't it more likely that that was a replacement drive that had a later date code than the original machine? This seems more circa 95

For anyone else who needs to restore an old Compaq, I found you can get the BIOS back onto the hard drive by using the Wayback Machine at archive.org and traveling back to a time when Compaq's website still had support for whatever system you're working on. The drivers for this system are available.
