    As a rule, after I do a black base coat, I will then drybrush with white before doing more colors, just hitting the highest spots. Colors read differently over black and white, so even the first coat of color starts to show variations. The colors pop much more over the white bits. Just thought I'd share for anyone starting drybrushing.
