Thank you for posting this. Joe Sgro was my teacher when I was 15- 20 something years old. I was so lucky to have him in my life. It's so great to watch and hear him play again!
It's so great to see this video of Joe- he was my teacher for 2 years- what a great teacher and guy he was. No nonsense- get the job done or you're out. Best, most thorough guitar teacher i ever had. There was a terrific culture built around the guitar and jazz in phila.at that time.
I’ve written an article about the Sgro-Sandole guitar culture of Philadelphia. If you would like to read it I can send you a pdf. I would need your e-mail.
@@sslawek I would love to read that. I studied with Sonny Troy and later with Joe Federico. Both of them held Joe up as a god. The way they both talked abput him,, if I ever met the guy, I wouldn't be able to even speak. I'd be too scared
Very cool to see him explain some of his teachings. I am a south Philly native and have been fortunate to be from a city filled with amazing jazz guitarists such as Joe. I did study with Joe Federico for a umber of years.
hello, l am a former student of BROTHER SGRO,WE BOTH ARE REIATED TO THE GREAT VIOLIN PLAYER " JOE VENUTI , IALSO HAD THE PLEASURE OF STUDING WITH DENNIS SANDOLI WHO WAS ALSO MY BROTHER DENNIS HAD A BROTHER CALLED ADOLPH SANDOLI
Great video. I studied with Joe in the sixties. I could not have had a career with out him. Funny story, I was performing at the House of Blues in New Orleans and a couple came up to me and said that they had a friend in Philadelphia that played guitar and that my playing sounded a lot like his. I asked them, is your friend named Joe Sgro? They were floored when I told them that he was my guitar teacher.
Love always to Brother Joe 😘 He touched countless lives and was the best guitar teacher this world has ever known. Now seeing this even more can still learn from him! What a blessing! Miss him so much, such a calming spirit he had, beautiful voice! Very much look forward to seeing him soon enough in the resurrection! Yeshua Messiah (Jesus) is coming soon enough! HalleluYah praise Yahweh!! 💙🙏 Love you Joe 🥰 till we meet again in paradise!!
@@sslawek If you have any of Dennis A weeks, I would love to see them. I lost my books many years ago. I want to put out a compilation of different students A weeks someday. Imagine seeing Trane's or Moody's A weeks....
@@leegollin4417 I studied with Joe Sgro and was referring to his lessons. Joe Federico has several notebooks full of Dennis Sandole’s system. I hope he is still around and willing to share to preserve those things.
@@sslawek I studied with Joe Fed for a couple of years before Dennis. I would definitely be interested in seeing your lessons with Joe! I would really love to hear more of his playing. I've only seen the record with the Mambos on it an it's pretty light.
@@leegollin4417 I have visitors until tomorrow, so it will take a few days, but give me an e-mail address and I will eventually get to scanning my lessons and send them.
Ed McMahon had a TV show in Philly before the tonight show. I was told he would have Joe on the show and introduce him as the greatest guitarist in the world. That seemed like hype at first, but being an older fellow myself now, and having heard a lot of players through the years, I'm totally willing to entertain the possibly that what Ed said was not really hype at all. What a time to be privileged to live through! Live on my three teachers and friends: Joe, Dennis, and Joe Federico, and the many other seminal shapers of the an electric guitar Florence, Philadelphia.
He was the worlds greatest guitar player, he just didn’t want the world fame that went along with how extremely talented he was. His heart was to teach as many as he could all he knew. 💙

Joe was my teacher back in the 60's He was very big on playing position. If I stayed with him I probably would be a much better player.
This is wonderful. I've heard about Joe before. And now being able to watch this video is fantastic. Do you have more videos of him? Thanks
My teacher from decades ago...
