I find it a nice little detail that Ulmo would address Turgon using Sindarin and not Quenya (i.e. mentioning Gondolin instead of Ondolindë), as one would assume. Unlike most Valar and Ainur he didn’t spent much time in Valinor learning it, while his persistent interest in the peoples of Middle Earth probably made him familiar with Sindarin.

Yep, great point; I also thought about this while I was writing my script for this one. I'm pretty confident that Tolkien says elsewhere that any/all of the Valar are able to master any language, and quickly -- even Tulkas! -- but yes it definitely makes sense for Ulmo to feel comfortable conversing with Turgon in Sindarin. Which is also interesting to consider in light of what Thingol is going to do at the end of the chapter. Will try to remember to comment more on this in future vids.

I love that you did this.
People dont know that Galadriel is a figure similar to Melian the Maiar - who Tolkien establishes as her mentor.

To me it seems Tolkien was trying to teach some hard lessons. It's really difficult to let go of the things we put some of ourselves into to create, but it is necessary sometimes. Great video as usual, Dan. I absolutely love this series.

@5:15 Those appear to be winged dragons in the illustration of the fall of Gondolin (year 510). However, there were no winged dragons at the time, only dragons like Glaurung who Turin Turumbar slew in 499. Morgoth did not unleash the winged dragons until the Valar were about to take Angband in 587.

I shouldn't be surprised you know professional voice actors, or that they'd show up for you. But as always, all your guests did a superb job! And, as always, you've presented the most glorious fanart. I am in great jealousy of some people's ability to take on architecture.
Please tell me there have been at least a few memes/jokes about “Rock-land?” ...Except, there's also a Rockland, Maine... which I now will not be able to think of without calling it Gondor in my head. Drats.
I think the message of not being vein about that which you create or that is physical seems to be an ongoing failure for our characters. Then again, for humanity as well. Vanity leads to many vile things.
I may have mentioned this before, while I realize there is more of a friendship and equality between Melian and Galadriel but it bothers me somewhat that we know more of their bond than Melian and her own daughter. You would think that with a species being so long lived and generally (with some notable families being an exception) having fewer children or further age gaps between them, there would be more about kin other than duty. But, again, this is a mythos not a typical narrative. I do think it says much of Galadriel to remain hesitant even to someone she trusts. I wonder if she would, in her day, maybe pass Melian's foresight with her insight.
If only individuals would actually /heed/ the council given to them.

The Ulmo quote “But love not too well the work of thy hands…” always reminds me of Matthew 6:20-21 “…For where thy treasure is, there also will thy heart be” as a gentle reminder that this is not your eternal home 💚

That seems a good connection to make!
This is the only time the Valar ever really issue a "commandment" in this way, and it can be viewed as the closest thing we get to a central moral precept in this story, I think.

If Melian made one mistake it was that sometimes she spoke too cryptically or never elaborated further on certain of her insights, though I also think she chose her words carefully because at no point does she ever go against the Ainur or Eru Illuvatar's plan, perhaps there are certain truths and forthcoming events she cannot say. For instance she does not stop Luthien from seeing Beren even though she can perceive a future where she will never be able to reunite with Luthien again, and only until the end of the world.

I adore how Chrissy presented Galadriel as a bold and pride princess, she was my favourite voice actor so far besides Robert as Fëanor (love the spite in his voice) and the guy who voiced Ulmo (quite reverberating). It's probably the only time we hear Galadriel speak about vengeance!

    • @VoiceofGeekdom

to add on Sam answer Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion until Turin Chapter, Then read Children of Hurin then continue Silmarillion where u left off to completion is my recommendation.

    • @kevinneighbour3458
      @kevinneighbour3458 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I'd go in the order suggested above, then once you get through The Silmarillion, go back and re-read LotR to get a deeper appreciation of the various bits of lore and history that characters like Elrond refer back to in the text. I would also then recommend Unfinished Tales afterwards for the additional information on the Second Age.

Fan-Intel-discovery-epic new series that has been compared to the Silmarillion and Hero Sagas...pretty awesome, also the preview says "return to good story telling". If ur a LOTR-Tolkien, Narnia, or Fantasy Fan, (as i am), this could be....intriguing, (particularly with the way Amazon could fundamentally change Tolkiens Middle Earth saga. it goes live 1pm eastern standard time, 26 June.
