I have watched several videos of the Megavalanche and it is interesting to see how each competitor is more skilled in certain riding skills, and a little less skilled in others. Baptiste is a master at bike handling. He takes the switchbacks like a genius. And he kept his bike under complete control in the snow and ice at the top of the mountain. Where he loses pace is against those riders who are engines. Those men pass Baptiste in the flat stretches, but he catches them again on the switchbacks. Near the end of the race, he was going down switchbacks and was being slowed by another rider who was in front of him. Baptiste asked the other fellow to let him pass. He even said that if he was in front, he would help the other to catch whoever was ahead of them both. It was a false thing to say even if Baptiste was sincere. One man can draft another on a straight road and be pulled along, but you can't ride close enough on switchbacks for drafting to help you. But more significant is that a person with better skills on switchbacks cannot make another rider better at switchbacks just by being in front of him. Baptiste got to the bottom of that section and the other fellow was nowhere to be seen. I'm sure that the other guy was not angry about it. Each competitor must ride as fast as they can. But earlier in the race the other rider shone. There was a section of nearly level and straight trail where the other fellow sped off like he had rockets attached to him and Baptiste was left far behind. This is an amazing race. It is 7 1/2 kilometers long (12 miles) and all of it is at high altitude with thin air. All exertion is extremely difficult because it's so hard to get enough oxygen. And the hazards frighten me. One wrong decision, even a tiny one and you crash, possibly causing serious injury. I salute all of the competitors, and those who place in the top 10 are amazing.
i admire you and hear your laboured breathing, it makes me short of breath just sitting on my sofa. is this really fun over stones and slush and so forth
