The Paths to a PhD in Germany (+ My Tips to Get the Right PhD Position)

  • The PhD system can be a bit confusing to foreigners. It mostly differs from the general "PhD studies" that you may be more familiar with. There are two main paths that lead to a PhD in Germany. The structured path and the individual path. Most people in Germany walk on the individual path to a PhD. It gives you a lot of options to do your PhD in the university, in a research organization or in the industry. However, it requires a lot of initiative and self-discipline. I explain both paths and share my tips on how to get the right position. Good luck!

    Thanks Cem Avsar, this is a great info about the PhD paths 🚀. I agree with you on “contributing to a proposal, may get you high chance of getting a position” nevertheless; it is not always working as you mentioned. Funding limitations and employment priorities are always big players. Also we have to accept the statement of “having an idea doesn’t make it yours”, not getting a position, should not demotivate the searching process. When a door closes another one always open, and we never know what life brings 😊
