    After testing the downrange visible signatures, we shot all the infrared illuminator devices and filmed them through an L3 unfilmed white phosphor night vision tube.
    A full moon was rising to the left of the range, and had started to illuminate some of the treetops. Most of the range was in shadow though and quite dark.

    If I could like this 5 times I would, what an excellent video! Thanks for taking the time to do a massive comparison like this. I especially appreciate the down ranger visible signature pics. It honestly didn’t seem like the D2 was as bad as people make it sound.

    You can adjust the Amazon Special back a little and it will still be just as focused but will be round instead of square and won't have the striations. I've had mine for 3 or 4 years now and it's worked great for me. Not rugged like the more expensive ones but for $45 it spits out a lot of illumination, newer ones even come with a pressure switch and flashlight mount now.

      I’m in a similar boat in choosing an ir laser/illuminator. I am leaning towards the MAWL because of its versatility. It’s long range illuminator is almost as wide as the PERST at its widest. On the MAWL’s mid range setting you get the close up and distance illumination. That’s great for situational awareness. It’s also way more ergonomic. The PERST is my favorite ir laser/illuminator for under $1.5k, the mawl is my favorite for $2.8k or under. If you have the means, get the mawl.

    Given that visible lasers aren’t very popular for pistols or rifles, why are they common on IR setups? I’m trying to decide if I just want the Modlite IR head or a DBAL. What’s the benefit?

    • @jwramp
      @jwramp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They make it much easier to zero your infrared laser, as most of them are slaved between Vis/IR - you can turn on your vis during the day and match it to your red dot or scope's point of aim.

    • @SmithandWessonBlazer
      @SmithandWessonBlazer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally easier to shoot than passive aiming a red dot or holographic with NV settings (Unity Fast mounts are awesome but it still just feels different with nods on). Lasers are so much easier to see under NV than vis lasers are during the day.

    MSI8000 is a f-king lighthouse. I think it is too bright for anything closer than 100m in narrow option.

    • @ChemistyStudent
      @ChemistyStudent ปีที่แล้ว

      @Shimitzu I just bought one (Optics Planet had it on super sale) and I'm curious about that exact thing. The light has high/medium/low settings so I'm curious how it performs in the real world. It's a tank, and you can swap from IR to white if you have time to disassemble and swap out the LED unit, but the white light with the factory 18650 is kinda underwhelming but for a 2017 OEM battery... I've got a new one in the mail, but the head is like an old school Maglite where you can dial in the beam. EDIT: The MSI-8000 is indeed a fking light house even on medium or high; it has a noticeable red glow if you look straight at it and are close; I think your best bet at closer ranges is to stick with it on low, and adjust the beam size as needed. I think you may also need to check the wavelength your tube is the most sensitive to. My armasight Nyx-14 Pro is aligned to the 850nm and starts autogating at how bright the MSI is when playing around in my neighborhood. When taken in context with the special forces feedback armasight used to design the setup, I think there's a reason it's so overpowered, but my guess is that it's intended to punch through photonic barriers; the otherwise dark corners of my neighbors front doors/backyards was totally visible. There's also a "flashlight doubler' adaptor that you can screw on that focuses the beam even more which they claim goes out to 1km. If you need to illuminate something, the Armasight has totally got you covered. Good luck finding them anymore though.
