It is positively criminal that such sublime music is not known better. Thanks for posting this.

Probably written in the reign of Henry the eighth, if not earlier.

Why do I love the 15th century so much?! The Late Gothic architecture, the swords, the music!... So much gorgeousness! Plus, things were in flux in so many different aspects. I think I just love transitional periods!

Perhaps because life was short, dangerous but more meaningful. I cannot imagine what life would have like and I would surely have died in childbirth. And yet how more more "real" must have been compared to our sanitized, deodorized, mechanized, computerized world. Sometimes I dream of a moon rising over a river in near silence, with only the insects and the night wind, and I know that my spirit has traveled back to this time.

@@madamvaudelune3298 , Beautifully said! As a musician, and medieval music specialist, I always think about how much more special and "real" the music must've been in the period. In a time way before recording technology, when all the sounds you heard were from the natural world, it must've seemed like someone was literally working magic and exercising supernatural forces when a common person heard a piece of music such as the "Nostre Dame" Mass here by Guillaume de Machaut...

Glorious - sublime music beautifully sung. Thank you. Why isn't Browne's music better known and more often performed ?

Good question. And Kellyk and the other Eton Choirbook people. The Sixteen have recorded some, but it might as well not have survived if it not going to be heard more. And there is a splendid collection of masses in the Forrest Heyther part books. Some have seen the light of day!

I gather from one of the Sixteen that certain pieces by the likes of Sheppard are 'late to the party' because they had an incomplete set of part books, and scholars had to try and reproduce the missing ones. Not sure if that also applies to Browne? He certainly deserves to be better known. His stabat mater is wonderful by the way sung by the Tallis Scholars
