He killed two innocent people. Accidental, but he was negiligent, end of story.
Her whining and claims of US abandoning him is ridiculous.
If a foriegn diplomat came to the US and killed two of her family members, I am sure she would not be advocating for their release.

Where did an American serviceman get one and a half million dollars to pay to the families of the victims?

Yep. No one usually carries that amount under their auto insurance. Thinking we paid.

He got it dollar by dollar from family and friends. There are a lot of people who think very highly of this man and his family. There are a lot of people who are heartbroken that he's sitting in prison due to a medical emergency beyond his control. There were a lot of people who helped in any way they could to make that settlement substantial enough that his sentence might be suspended, like 95% of Japanese citizens convicted of the same crime, as the Senator mentioned.

To be not responsible enough to understand he wasn't safe to be driving is a crime only in America do we let behavior that caused the death of others if he did pass out from a medical condition they would have shown him to have had a medical problem so this smells of coverup but in America we let killers go free after a very short jail sentence if any I have a family member that has 8 DUI case's and 7 seriously hurt people in his crashes and 2 even died from the crash and California gave him his license back after only 9 months in a gay men's center and even after that he has killed in another DUI but no charges

I was a young Sailor stationed on a Ship homeported in Yokosuka, Japan from 1977 to 1979. I had my Japanese Drivers License to be able to drive the Ships Pickup Truck. In my off time, after the bars got old I took up a hobby of driving the On Base Only Japanese Taxi Cabs. One of two Americans that did it during my time. I drove for only about a year and made about $2K to buy Camera Equipment. At the 7.30 point in the video it is mentioned about Compensation if you harm someone in an accident. Usually it was compensation for a lifetime of wages that would have been earned by the person hurt or killed. I had a close call one night in a rain storm and deiced to quit while I was still ahead. I see some Japan Bashing here. It is unnecessary, as I have the upmost respect for Japan and it's people. After Navy Retirement in 1995, i jumped at the chance to work for SONY in San Diego making picture tubes. I went on to finish my 8 year SONY career in Philly, PA near my hometown fixing Play Station 2's. During the first week in Japan every Sailor goes to a Class on the Culture and Laws. I knew up front the responsibility I took driving in Japan. Sad this happened, hope he gets released early.

The Americans killed more innocent civilians than were killed in the Auschwitz camp with strategic intentions.
Also, after the war, when the United Nations decided to repatriate prisoners of war to Japan, the U.S. military played a game of unloading Japan prisoners of war from flying planes.
The U.S. government knew that there was a prisoner of war camp for American soldiers in Hiroshima, and dropped the atomic bomb.
Famously, the atrocities committed against American prisoners of war were not inflicted by the guards, but by the parents of civilians whose children were killed by the outrage that indiscriminately destroyed the town.
Japan guards tried to stop this, but the American military killed 100,000 civilians in an airstrike overnight in a town without a military base, and the families of the victims were too large to prevent.
And atrocities against prisoners of war were rare.
In addition, many Japan soldiers were killed by American soldiers without being allowed to surrender. Japan would be more tolerant as long as they would take them prisoner.

Although I do believe 3 years is a harsh sentence for an accident. If he had been drinking or on drugs is one thing, but simply dozing off at the wheel? We've all done it, and were lucky. His luck ran out. Probation, loss of his license, and a hold on his passport till he made restitution to the victims families would be warranted, but 3 years in prison??? I also believe for a sitting Senator to stand before the Senate and proclaim that the court of another country made the wrong decission without actually being a part of that trial is also wrong. And to make assumptions about another country's laws is wrong. If you don't like their laws don't leave the base you're stationed on. Don't we blast the left for doing this if they disagree with a verdict. Remember Kyle Rettenhouse for example? This should be a warning to any Americans in Japan, to not break their law. In fact it should be a strong suggestion that Americans should leave Japan or risk serious jail time for having an accident.

What? First off, you've gotten a lot of facts wrong about this case.
Lt. Ridge Alkonis had passed out due to altitude sickness, not exhaustion. According to the senator, he was so affected that Alkonis could not be awoken and struggled to come to even when he struck another vehicle. He was blue, witnesses said. He was apparently well-rested. It was a medical emergency.
It is true that this senator cannot opine as to the legitimacy of the trial or outcome. However, he has every right to say that he disagrees with it.
The issue here, however, isn't necessarily the law. It is culpability; something the U.S. treats as a civil matter. Like the senator said, and the so-called "Gomenasai tradition", Alkonis paid over a million to the victims' family. Restitution, as they say, was paid.
The difference between this and Kyle Rittenhouse is heaven and Earth. The former is an accident. The former was mistreated by the government by most accounts. The former paid the price. And the former was persecuted despite it. Actually, there's almost no relation between the Kyle Rittenhouse case and this.
A more similar case, albeit still differing in circumstance, is Brittney Griner. The difference is still night and day which is why the senator calls out this case. Lt. Ridge Alkonis is a uniformed American and Ms. Griner is not. The U.S. has a joint legal authority in Japan and not in Russia. The U.S. Navy had cleared Lt. Ridge Alkonis of wrongdoing and no government entity has done so for Ms. Griner. This is why the senator emphasizes that this could be due to an oversight in the agreement between the U.S. and Japan. He has every right to bring this up as a political and international concern to the United States Senate due to the perceived nature of Japanese overreach and the necessary ramifications and negotiations that must take place to prevent such from every occurring again as an assurance to every U.S. soldier stationed on foreign land.

He didn’t fall asleep, Sparky, he passed out. You sound just like a leftist, you hear one thing and your brain can’t focus on any other facts. All the facts point to a medical condition not falling asleep. He was in mid sentence talking to his daughter, she couldn’t wake him, he was still unconscious after the impact, he had barely enough strength to get out of the car and he was pale. They think it was from altitude sickness.

Think about other way. If you lost two of your family members in a parking lot of the rest area due to some random stranger reckless driving, would you accept ONLY 3 years for manslaughter of two family members? And yes it happened at a parking lot. Not like someone try to walk across the road or street. While their defense of passing out due to altitude sickness comes into play, where is the responsibility from him? Why didn’t his wife drive? Even in the US, I don’t see how a defense can validate this man slaughter as less than 3 years. He is very lucky for only 3 year sentence for killing two innocent people.
