I'm not using the Lanshan 1 but the 2P. However one major plus point for the SMD Lunar Solo (and the reason I'm buying another - Silpoly - tent in addition to the L2) is that it's Silpoly and not Silnylon. So, especially for UK weather, this is a huge benefit as not only will it not sag in heavy rain (because Poly doesn't absorb water whereas Nylon does, even with the DWR coating) but it won't retain water. I've read this can lead to an extra 500g weight when you pack up in the morning.
Some valid points Kevin, I don't know what it was with the SMD but I didn't quite get on with it, and actually prefer the Lanshan 1P. The 2P gets a lot of plaudits. I suppose wet tents might become a problem on multi day trips with prolonged rain, but for 1 night it's not a big issue imho.
@@WalkWithWallace Yes the extra trailweight (after a quick check) of 910g (L1) vs 1,220g (L2) was worth it to me for the extra space, double doors and 2 large vestibules. Pitch area is obviously larger but not an issue. Lots of mods that can be done to improve both Lanshans.
Great review. The Lanshan1 (2021) really fixed most of the short-comings you addressed with the older Lanshan1. They have increased the inside size by 20 cm, so height should no longer be an issue for taller people. They also added some venting mesh at the top of the fly for more airflow. Something I really like is that you can get 3-season and 4-season inner tents for it for around $65.
@@WalkWithWallace Do you mean, the regular Lanshan? It’s the one I have and not sure if I wld like the pro better. So far the regular one works great. 😁
@@djw8504 there's the original Lanshan 1 and the Pro 1. An updated Lanshan 1 came out that's essentially the same size as the 1 Pro but has a mesh inner.
That's interesting to know, my SMD has about 3 weeks worth of nights under its belt, whereas the Lanshan only 1. I'll keep an eye on the condition of the Lanshan the more Kevin uses it.
@@S-WS-lx2hm still difficult to gauge. The Lanshan hasn't had nearly as much use as the SMD Lunar Solo. The latter was beginning to look a little tired after nearly 30 nights out, which isn't a lot.
Great resource for anyone looking for such a tent. Must be difficult having to commit to a product when buying online. Films like these make things a lot easier for folks. Well done Robin.
Great Review. I recently used a Lanshan 1 on the TMB. I bought it because it was an affordable (I paid about £75 on Aliexpresss), sub 1kg tent. I was a bit sceptical however after 8 nights in it I was very impressed with it and would certainly recommend it. For uk backpackers who are faced with extortionate import duties for US made gear the Lanshan is really worth serious consideration.
Hi, one Importen question is the condensation: The Luna solo has a good ventilation system, not only on the top, but there is a mesh line all around the walls to avoid condensation. How with Lanshan?
Just an FYI - the import duties (DHL+Import Taxes+VAT) total around 25%. I recently bought some gear from the USA (US$300 with an extra £64 to HMC&E after delivery) and that's what I paid. Considering that most gear will be much cheaper in the USA than in the UK it's often worth the hassle if you want US made gear, as it will be cheaper than buying the same item here.
Hi Robin. The missing bit of information is how tall you are. Me being 185 cm wouldn't go for anything shorter than Lunar Solo. I do not care for the price in this case. I spent about 40 nights under SMD tent and there is no sign of wearing out. I tested it in Scottish and Welsh rain and wind and had no issues with leaks so as much as I like numbers I'm not crazy about them. Cheers, Seb
Good point Seb, I'm 178cm. Great to hear yours is holding out well. I'm liking my SMD, but looking forward to getting my Trailstar out again now the midges are gone.
Lanshan for the win I have the lanshan 1P and 2P and ground sheets best part is if they get messed up or rip which they haven’t yet but I’m ruff on gear to replace the whole thing is very affordable and you can get different inners they have both been great and I’m surprised i haven’t damaged or ripped either one yet...yet. Great honest review thank you
I've always gone by the tried and tested method of never buying the most expensive or cheapest item but look for the value in-between and that usually works for most things...
Great review ... I have the lunar solo and love it, but don't like all the condensation. The 2 wall approach for the lanshan plus the cheaper price looks very appealing!
Hi Robin. I've had the SMD Lunar Solo for a couple of years now. After using on the Rob Roy Way this year I decided I wanted more space so bought the Lanshan Flames Creed 2. About 5 or 600g heavier. Have both seam sealed but yet to use them in wet conditions.
Can you fold the vestibule up underneath itself with the door closed like on the Lunar Solo? in other words, the doors only go down halfway and it creates a porch.
Great review, thanks. One point worth considering is that, if you live in North America the SMD has customer support and a real warranty, whereas the Lanshan bought on AliExpress will leave you on your own (or pay extremely high return shipping costs and have serious language barriers). In addition, the SMD is made from silicon coated POLYESTER (not nylon like the Lanshan) and won't sag when wet. If caught in a serious rain and wind storm, you can stay in the tent and ride it out (whereas with Lanshan you'll have to go out and stretch the tent).
Thanks Dano and some valid points there. I think the Lanshan is excellent if you're just starting out or on a tight budget. Makes lightweight backpacking more affordable. For long term ownership you'd want the SMD. The space in the SMD for a 1 man tent is excellent.
@@darthkek1953 if the wind gets up with only bungee guys, the tent panels will curve and turn into a sail. Maybe add light cords as well for those nights.
Since this video the lanshan 2 pro was released, it's an exact copy of the six moons one, 20d sil nylon, more spacious, single wall, bug fly built in not separatable, 690g. But you have to silicone seal your own seams.
Thanks for this vid 👍. Couple of questions please: can you secure the door partly open to provide some shelter and some view/ventilation instead of being open from floor to ceiling? Ideally the door would have zips top and bottom to add venting via a small opening at the top to augment the peak. Also, any comments on bathtub heights please? What’s the Lunar like on a pitch that isn’t flat? And have you had any issues on rocky terrain unable to use all the guy outs? 😁
Hi Peter, from memory you can slide the doors when (zipped up) the central guyline to offer more venting. The bathtub is 6" deep. By shortening or lengthening the guylines I've always managed to get the pegs in. FWIW, I actually prefer the Lanshan 1 Pro to the Lunar Solo, just a bit easier to pitch on uneven ground and other little quirks.
@@WalkWithWallace Thanks for replying so speedily. Ah, maybe Lansham Pro for me then. Presume you haven’t found sagging silnylon in middle of wet night a problem 🤔
I recently picked up a Lunar solo. My third night sleeping in it was pouring rain and windy all night. Other than a bit of condensation in the morning, the tent was completely waterproof, and stood up to high winds. (I did have SMD seam seal it before shipping). Great comparison video!
Cheers Goatlord, they're excellent tents the Lunar Solo's. Did you find yours a bit flappy at times? I also discovered I was pitching it wrong having the front guyline staked out in front of the doors rather than behind.
@@WalkWithWallace I didn't have any flapping issues once I got the hang of pitching. There is learning curve with this tent. A bad pitch will make for all kinds of problems.
I have seen the lanshan in lot of videos and its held out in all conditions and I was thinking would it be better than SMD ? you might have me swayed now Robin ... What I dont like about the SMD if pitched in a location with no breeze you get dripped from condensation that wont happen with the lanshan as it has an inner .. Good comparison mate . atb Dave..
Kevcarp mentioned above that the Lanshan isn't wearing as well as the SMD. Otherwise out in the field I'd imagine they'd perform more or less equally, Lanshan more waterproof if sealed though.
I have bought the Lanshan Flame's Creed 1 this year. Used under heavy rain(ear plug mandatory) and snow. Condensation is not important. I am a 59yo dude, 171cm and 78kg. So far I have been satisfied with this tent.
Well, i got the Lanshan now so I obviously have to like it. 🤷🏻♀️ I’m yet to pitch it in the garden. Hope it’s not difficult to pitch.. Anyways, great comparison video! Clear and concise. 👌🏼 Mari
Cheers Mari, it's a doddle to pitch. 2 rear corners first, then pitch front centre that holds up the pole. Then front 2 corners and then the remaining rear centre. Then go around and make sure guys are lined up with the seams and tighten up. 😁 Is the YT meet, your first planned outing in it?
I got the Flames Creed 20D for $80....only been able to pitch it in my yard so far, but like it so far, excited to take it out. Wish it had pockets though.
Just ordered a Lanshan 1 Pro, which being single skin is closer to the Lunar Solo. Doubt I'll be using it till next summer, as my 'go to' tent is my Luxe Hexpeak V4A, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the Lanshan performs.
@@marekbily8677 must admit I prefer the Lanshan, marginally better in the wind and I prefer the groundsheet in it too. I did have an older version of the Lunar Solo though.
Great vid thanks,. But comparing, is the lanshan not better for the uk weather as it has a separate inner? Would this stop touching the outer and keep moisture out? And does having the fly sheet higher at the front catch the wind and rain up and under?
It's more of a bug net than a separate inner, both tents will get condensation. On the whole I've only had one bad night in the Lunar Solo for condensation as there was no breeze at all.
Solid Review! I'm looking at the new Lanshan 1P Pro which is almost identical to the SMD Lunar Solo. So this comparison was really helpful to that too. thanks! You've got a new sub here!
I'm aware of the Hex Peak and Southern Cross tents, but haven't seen them in the flesh yet. I'm after yet another tent, so will research them a bit more. I like Raymond's new MSR Access 1 too.
Thanks for your review. Could you tell - how much space is between sleeping bag footbox and tent wall when you lay on inflatable sleeping mat in lunar solo?
@@pR13S7 I'm 5'10" by the way. Because there's no inner you've got plenty clearance at your feet and head. Some people add a second guyline to get more head space.
Thank you for your comparison review. On the back of it I purchased the Lanshan using the link you provided. I like the SMD idea of fastening the door tabs on the hook and prussic knot. Brilliant idea as pegging a door down from the inside is fiddly, even more so if you need to pee in the night! I will have a go at recreating that fastening on the Lanshan when it arrives. All the best....Paul
Nice one Paul, did you get it for a good price? I noticed the other day they were on offer. You need an empty Lucozade bottle or similar for pees in the night. 😀
Hard to pass up saving a hundred quid! There is so much money that can be saved while still having great trips. Especially if the money goes to a pub or micro brew!
Hi Robin, great comparison. I loved my Lunar Solo, but just reviewed the Lanshan 1 PRO and feels better made to me for less money. Time will tell ! ATB A
Cheers Andrew, the new Lanshan Pro looks very similar. I don't think SMD tents are in the same league as other US imports like Mountain Laurel Designs, Tarptent etc. Will be interesting to see how the Lanshan Pro holds out.
Great review. I have the lunar solo. You did a GREAT job pointing out strengths and weaknesses of each. I lean towards the spaciousness of the Solo, but the price if the Flames Creed is very tempting! Great job ... first time watching so I justed subbed! Looking forward to more good stuff! 😎😎
I prefer that color Lanshan , than the while color on the Lanshan 2. I notice the mic on your jacket, is that the way your are doing your audio now? I like the all in one pitch on the Lunar Solo, especially if you are trying to pitch in the rain. No matter what the claims, I always spray my whole tent, not just the seams, just to be on the safe side. You did a great job with this comparison video Robin, it's a 10 from me! Cheers Alan
Cheers kind sir, I wouldn't get a white tent. Imagine that around summer solstice. Nae darkness. 😄 If I'm using my Sony RX100 or need to move away from the camera then I use the mic with voice recorder. I couldn't be bothered having to sync the audio in every video I make. Quite easy with PowerDirector though.
I’m trying to decide whether to save and get a Zpacks Duplex or go cheaper and get the Lunar Solo. I know this is an older video. Do you still have the Lunar Solo? Still recommend it? Nice channel, subscribed. ✌️
Hi there, I do still have the Lunar Solo and it became my main tent in second half of this year and I would definitely recommend it. Any other questions, give me a shout and cheers for the sub. 😁
Hey Robin - noticed these tents sell with options of ground sheet and 4 season inner tent... would this improve the comfort any, would you consider any of these options?
Hi Donnie, I like the simplicity of a single skin shelter. But they can be drafty at times. Mesh inners add a little protection and helps catch any condensation droplets. I'd definitely consider the 4 season inner to cut out drafts to increase comfort.
Great balanced, comparison video Rob. 👌 Suprised you went for the Lanshan 😉 You certainly got it looking taught. Was the front still abit fiddly aye? Looked guid in the video. Am sure mine will last longer than 3 outings. Maybe it's the luck with them sometimes.
Great review Robin, I'm still unsure whether to go for a Lanshan 1 or 2, but I've recently seen this six moons design and found it interesting competitor. All the best Steve.
Cheers Steve, I suppose its down to how packable and light you want it. Lanshan 1 is excellent for longer multi day hikes, whereas the 2 more for shorter trips. The Lunar Solo is really spacious for a 1 person tent, check out the new Lanshan Pro which is even more similar to the Lunar Solo.
@@ScoutManSteve there is that, but a lot depends on the conditions too. I've had really bad condensation in the Lunar Solo, but it was a cold damp night with no wind. 🤔
Walk With Wallace 👣 I own the Lanshan1 Pro and owned the Lunar Solo, and the are teally really very similar; considering the price between the two Lanshan Pro for sure. BTW Lanshan1 (not Pro) if you are 178cm or below is still an excellent and cheaper tent!
A great comparison video on the two styles of tents I was thinking of going for, as until recently I had a Terra Nova Competition 1. One of the two above might be a nice Christmas present....to oneself,
I have both the lanshan 1 and 2 ...If you are hiking moderate miles I would go with the lanshan 2 it’s extra space and comfort are so worth the extra few ounces ... longer miles and I’m talking 15+ you might want to opt for the lanshan 1 to save weight ... top tip is to peg out the RHS mid tie out with your other trekking pole set at about 18” it pulls the inner tent away from your face which can be a problem with the lanshan 1 ... both lanshan tents are a great buy for the money though ... thank you for the comparison video and welcome to the lanshan clan 😂😂
Cheers Dave, I only borrowed the Lanshan as I was interested in how it compared against the SMD. I am tempted to get one though as you can't have enough tents. 😁 Kev who I borrowed it from has a pyramid Lanshan too, like a 1.5. Good for winter when you need a bit extra space.
Nature hike cloud up 2 ,nature hike cloud up 3 , browning 10x10 car camping tent and a Coleman 10x10 instant up tent ... the wife thinks I’m a bit mental and frankly she might be right 😂😂
@@jdmccartney1 nah, that's perfectly normal. There's no such thing as a perfect tent, so you need a few to cover different seasons, weather, location etc. 😁
Lanshan '2019 updated' is lot bigger then the original, im 6'2 and fit in perfect. Only problem by that is added weight. They have now brought a 'Pro' version out now which is even lighter. Great video btw as im actually looking into lunar solo for an upgrade.
You can go on TH-cam and watch many set up their new tent. You can then say " I love my new tent and it was a great value" but beyond that I sort of wish everyone would just quit posting general opinions that mean so little.Talk about the length . This is a shorter tent maybe made fr the average height Asian. If youre taller than maybe 6'1 buy a different tent. Thank you for this poster showing the width difference. Thank you poster for mentioning thickness of materials. If we didnt have to wade through all the "I love my tent" postings, maybe we would see a few true comparisons discussing different types of cloth used, advantages of each cloth. Zipper comparison, etc. BTW, there are hundreds if not thousands of people posting their grandma's apple pie recipe but very few great postings that attach the actual recipe list, that show tips and tricks that have worked for them. Negative results that havent worked for them. Great editing that shows you all you need to know in a 3 min video compared to a 30 min video with no editing that spends 1 min showing me how to measure both cups of flour. You Tube has now been in existence long enough that many posting duplications force us to spend way too much time sorting through postings when so many are half assed attempts by many just wanting to create a posting without using any rhyme or reason. Can you just imagine how many apple pie recipes we will have to sort through 20 yrs from now?. Its so bad now that many just go to a pie recipe, literally copy/paste, (including the same spelling and grammar mistake)
Some valid points Dale, thank you for taking the time to comment and I can't disagree with you either. I'm always honest and impartial and certainly don't want to add further white noise to TH-cam.
Great review, Friend! It looks like a winner! We use hammocks more than the tent, but enjoy them both. You need room to stretch out, and would probably want the roomier one. We use the Big Agnes for two, and have found it to be roomy enough, plus lightweight. Would be nice to pin the flaps back. Fantastic and very thorough review, glad to watch it! ATB, Lisa&Rick
Thank you L&R. 😁 I've never hammocked before, but there's no trees usually where I camp, but I'd love to try it out. The space is a factor I like with the Lunar Solo and the fact its simplicity of the built in groundsheet & bugnet. I've heard of the Big Agnes, but don't think I've seen one yet. 🤔 Cheers Robin
I've been told under, but to be honest I've found you get a better pitch putting the guyline in front of the door. The only problem with that is the top part can make a bit of noise in the wind.
The multiple panel design on the Lanshan is the reason why it has a better pitch than the Lunar Solo. I have one of the early ones when what and yellow were the only choices and you had to seal the mid panel pullouts yourself. It's been a great tent. But you really have to use the pullouts on the side panels to give yourself enough room. The new Lanshan pro version is very tempting. The only negative thing I can say is that Ron Bell demonstrated that the material used in the Lanshan is fairly weak and the rip stop grid nearly superficial. But I've been very impressed with the function and design otherwise.
I seen that video comparing the materials, even the HH was poor in comparison to their silnylon. You get what you pay for at the end of the day, they won't last forever, but they're still decent enough if you're starting out or on a cheap budget.
"The multiple panel design on the Lanshan is the reason why it has a better pitch than the Lunar Solo." Actualy, it is because he put the front guyline over the vestibule instead of under it. The Lunar Solo pitches fine if you do that.
Also, you can gat more ventilation in your Lunar Solo without opening a door by pulling the prusik knot up the guy line, inverting the vestibule about 1/2 way up. Still waterproof but door shut....
Now then a fresh comment Robin. Simplicity. At the end of a good days hike I just want to throw it up without even thinking. It appears good the Lanshan but still I like the sown in bug net. It has to be the Lunar Solo for me. Good video. Have a great week. P.S you can get it from ultralight Outdoor Gear. I won't put the link as I think it might be that making this comment go all funny!
Very useful review! I have the lunar, but the lanshan has really caught my eye. I’m also Scottish too bro:) Just one thing: I place my front guy under the fly. This sorts out the sagginess you identified.
Cheers mate, I've got a Lanshan Pro 1 winging its way to me just now. Someone else flagged that up in the comments too, I've tried it, but always seem to get a better pitch have the front guy on the outside. 🤔
@@WalkWithWallace Yes mate . Its strictly 3 season as the inner is all mesh. But so far so good. I hear 3F UL now offer a 4 season inner.. In my humble opinion the best bang for the buck ultralight weight tent out there . Just remember to seal the wick points..
@@niftyfiftycampingadventure795 I'd have to agree, would recommend them to anyone on a budget or wanting to try wild camping before getting expensive stuff.
@@WalkWithWallace my mate paul was looking at getting one as well he said he could get one for about £70 on ebay tons of people have them on youtube my cheap naturehike tent is well made and i only paid £55 its not as good as my hilleberg soulo but they sell for like £750 now

The new Luna Solo is Silpoly and not silnylon. The silpoly does not stretch as much after it's set up. It also does not absorb moisture like the silnylon does so your tent would stay dryer ( Lighter ) and easier to dry before packing it.
The 6 moons tent is definitely wider than the Lanshan but, the lanshan is 15 d sil nylon and the lunar is 20d sil polyester.Less sag on the lunar when wet . The Lanshan 2 is only 40 inches wide verses the lunar 1 being about 53 inches I believe. Hmmmmmm. I like the Lanshan butt!
@@WalkWithWallace Bought it, didn't arrive yet. As soon as I have it, gonna post my impressions. And its bigger, 2,3 x 1,1 meters and lighter, 690g without stakes.
Support the brand that put in the work. This is a small time company (SMD). Don't support the knock off. To me, it's just that simple. If the Lunar Solo did not exist, nor would the Creed 1...or companies like Lanshan. So why support a company who does not give back to the community through innovation and passion. Lanshan give's back (lower cost) by taking away (undercutting the innovators that are true to the scene)...
Hi Chris, I really can't disagree with you there. At time of making the video I was just interested in the comparison between the two. I haven't actually bought any Chinese knock offs, and no plans to either.
I have the lanshan tent and camped out one night in my backyard when it was raining and it leaked up threw the floor of the tent and also leaked in the guide out areas. Not impressed at all.
From 11/11 you will be able to get Lanshan 1 in Flame's Creed colour version for just £65 from Ali, so if considering to purchase Lanshan, wait a little:)
Worst mistake Six Moons made was outsourcing manufacture to China - this is the result and now they are suffering. I have a Luna Solo LE and its a great tent but now I stear clear of things made in China (not easy !)
great stuff, both awesome. if ya prepared to dig into ali pay and import one then lanshan is a good option. works well with a high pitch (130-140cm). only had it up to 40mph winds, was great... tho for foul weather def seam seal the mid panel guy outs😜
The biggest difference is that the Lanshan is double wall! Yes you have less space. But you won't be up all night because the condensation drips off on your face with every gust of wind with a wet sleeping bag. I can't believe you didn't mention that.
Thanks for the feedback. Can you say a mesh inner is a double wall? Plus if there's a breeze you don't tend to get condensation in the Lunar Solo. Still nights can be an issue though. Carry a J-cloth for wiping off condensation.
@@WalkWithWallace Well yes mesh is also double wall. It stops you from touching the wet fly with your sleeping bag or head or arms. Downside of a double wall is less space. Although you really need the extra space in a single wall tent so you don't touch the condensation. And I have seen a couple of videos by people with a Lunar Solo who didn't sleep that well because of droplets falling on their face. Wet inside, rain on top, Chinese torture. I'm not saying it is always that bad. But me personally I rather carry the extra 200 grams (or so?) for a full inner tent even if I would be hiking. On my bicycle, or recumbent trike, I often carry two outer outer and 1 inner tent so I can choose. Nice thing about teepee inners is that you can combine them with really spacious outer tarps. But that's another story.
@@WalkWithWallace And I can understand why people love their Cuban fiber single wall tents. When it rains it almost looks as if there is nothing between you and the elements. Quite thrilling if you know what I mean. Plus Cuban fiber you can shake dry in the morning. Water weighs a lot! Reason why I use a cut to size fleece picnic blanket for the vestibule. Super comfy, I don't lose stuff, and my gear is nice and dry. The 200 grams only saves me some clothes and socks. Then again, I bike with e-assist. So I can afford a little bit of luxury. On a mtb crossing harsh terrain it would be minimalist too. But single wall, never. Last time single wall (granted, very cheap tent) couple of years back I cried it would be the last camping trip. Then I gave it another go with a new tent. Now I'm fan again. If only it had a bathroom.
@@driewiel yeah Cuban fibre looks good, never tried one yet as the prices are eye watering. I suppose the it depends where you're camping. I'm usually up on the mountains and never had any problems with single skin shelters. The Lunar Solo does have good ventilation. I use tyvek sometimes for placing at the vestibule.
@@WalkWithWallace I paid € 56,92 for my white Lanshan 1. Can't complain. Hexpeak 4VA is a nice tent too. At €180 already more than I normally spend on gear. I always wanted one after seeing a one person teepee with half inner 40 years ago on my first bike tour. That was actually a 4 kilo cotton Erdman Schmidt costing 400 guilders. A fortune in those days. In the Netherlands teepee tents are rare. No idea why? But had I bought the Lanshan first I don't think I would have ordered the Hexpeak. Yes it is smaller. But kinda like that. After the cheap single wall disaster I got a Grand Canyon Cardova 1. Newer used it! And after that the pretty good older model 3F UL in orange. But as for weight and design the Lanshan wins. I'm only 1.75 so large enough for me. I can really recommend it unless you are tall. And if a tent is really light you can carry an extra 3F UL tarp/poncho which can act as a ground sheet at the same time. Or you get a large tarp and combine that with the Lanshan inner if you think you are going to spend much time in the rain. Nothing more fun than a huge fabric home listening to the rain waiting and waiting. I do have to say, I love rain during the night. Especially when someone else's tent is leaking like hell!
@@WalkWithWallace crikey, now you've got me doubting it, I was just about to pull the trigger on the 6 moon.... Surely its lighter and you mentioned the stitching on the lansham, not to mention that the 6m is the advertised weight? I'll be using it for bike packing, so weight/build quality is important. I've seen neither up close. What do you think mate?
@@McStoolio worth pointing out I had the 2018 SMD LS, they've made improvements since then. The Lanshan 1 Pro seems a bit less fussy to pitch. The Lunar Solo edges it if I really had to pick probably for longativity. 🏕
@@WalkWithWallace thanks for the response. Tbh, as I need it soon I'll just go for the one I can get delivered tomorrow, the 6M. I think that seals it. Cheers! Great videos, see you on the hills👍🏻
@@WalkWithWallace yeah I was looking at getting a one man tent and thinking about the six moons and boom seen your video and possibly go for the flames creed one and give it a go.....thanks again
But you know why the SMD is more expensive...they did all the Research and Development. The Lanshan just copie paste that... If we keep buying the cheaper copy paste stuff the companies that actually come up with the good ideas will extinct...
I noticed the SMD tent bag said 'made in China', I didn't want to say that when making the video as I couldn't find confirmation of that on the SMD website.
You would probably think Sam Smith has a strong accent also this is what makes the world go around imagine we all spoke with the same accent, God forbid.
Thanks for your review. I don't believe that the Lansham is more waterproof with flimsier materials....Their claim doesn't make any sense. The SMD has better quality materials, better construction, weighs 7 oz less (as per your scale) and has more room inside for the larger males in the crowd. The side guylines give it even more head/foot space for the extra tall. Not to mention you can work with the vendor if there are any warranty/quality issues. SMD remade this tent with the heavier material (20D top, 40D bottom) adding back a couple of ounces for an increased longevity. A lot of original thought was put into this tent's design, which the Lansham copied in a cheaper fashion. You get what you pay for. But this 'Cheaper Chinese' merchandise as it has been known for many years has gotten better to the point of being a middle of the road quality product, say better than anything you would find as a Walmart Brand here in the States. Having said that, the Lansham may be a great option if the following 2 criteria are met: 1) You are on a tighter budget. For the price, there is nothing else like it for sure. Period. 2) You are on the shorter end (child, teen, average female, shorter male). The average American Male sleeping on a 2.5 pad and a quilt on top will wake up on the Lansham with their feet wet from touching the foot end with their quilt.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Some valid points and I can't really disagree to be honest. I like the Lanshan's, but don't think I'll ever buy one, the SMD is a fine tent, my other shelter is a MLD Trailstar, my all time favourite shelter. Hope you're well and stay safe. 👍🏼

Cheers Ron. Yeah this video is a bit dated now. I'd recommend the Lanshan 2021 version now and probably over the SMD Lunar Solo too.
I’ve had both tents, both are good but the SMD has lasted longer. My son uses the Lanshan and it’s showing signs of wear after two or three outings.
Thanks Stewart, appreciate the feedback as always.
Cheers Rick, the Lanshan tents seem to be well received. Did you get a mix bag of weather on the TMB?
Great honest review thank you
Cheers Brendan, ironically I've got myself a Lanshan Pro 1. 😁 Looking forward to using next year. 🏕
I've always gone by the tried and tested method of never buying the most expensive or cheapest item but look for the value in-between and that usually works for most things...
That's a good ethos to be honest.
Thats the opposite of my method. Mid range products always sell you stuff you dont need.
Great review ... I have the lunar solo and love it, but don't like all the condensation. The 2 wall approach for the lanshan plus the cheaper price looks very appealing!
Cheers Fred, to be honest you'll get as much condensation in a Lanshan, the mesh inner doesn't prevent condensation build up.
Hi Robin. I've had the SMD Lunar Solo for a couple of years now. After using on the Rob Roy Way this year I decided I wanted more space so bought the Lanshan Flames Creed 2. About 5 or 600g heavier. Have both seam sealed but yet to use them in wet conditions.
Kev got himself a Flame's Creed 2 as well. Loads of space in it and I liked the red too for photos. Will you use the Lunar Solo again?
@@WalkWithWallace Yes, plan to use the SMD for overnights on the hills and the Lanshan 2 on long distance walks.
@@davidpaterson8779 makes sense. The extra space will be welcomed for longer trips.
No got the 2. Got the pyramid version. One TH-cam video called it the 1.5...Certainly alot more space and great for taller folk.
@@Kev_Russ ah I see. 👍🏼
I think you've pitched the LanShan a bit high, the ground clearance suggests that and that'll shrink the internal space down.
First attempt at pitching the Lanshan, I set the pole at 125cm/49". Cheers for the tip on changing the tieouts. I'll pass that onto Kev.
passed oan 😉
Can you fold the vestibule up underneath itself with the door closed like on the Lunar Solo? in other words, the doors only go down halfway and it creates a porch.
Hi Sam, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. 🤔
Really fair, balanced review Robin. The Lanshan seems to hold its own against the competition, I’m not sure which one I’d choose.👍👍👍
Thanks Anthony, there's some suggestions that the Lanshan might wear out a bit quicker. Otherwise on the face of it it's a tough choice.
The traditional trick / mod to use with nylon is to change the tieouts to bungee, takes care of sag when they get wet.
@@darthkek1953 Thanks. How long does this trick last before the bungee starts to weaken?
@@darthkek1953 if the wind gets up with only bungee guys, the tent panels will curve and turn into a sail. Maybe add light cords as well for those nights.
@@johnh1430 Great point. A string of 3mm dyneema on them too will have no weight, breaks at 200kg, and will be there, as you say, for strong wind.
Since this video the lanshan 2 pro was released, it's an exact copy of the six moons one, 20d sil nylon, more spacious, single wall, bug fly built in not separatable, 690g. But you have to silicone seal your own seams.
I don't know if I'd trust the Lanshan Pro 2 in high winds. Like the space inside though.
@@petergilbert72 it's my good weather go to tent, so it's only really seen light showers tbh.
@@LostAgainwithJim I discovered that, think I've nailed the pitch now though. Definitely important to have the guys staked out in line with the seams.
I've yet to hear anything bad about Lanshan tents. The new Pro looks good too and even more like my SMD Lunar Solo.
Is the YT meet, your first planned outing in it?
I got the Flames Creed 20D for $80....only been able to pitch it in my yard so far, but like it so far, excited to take it out. Wish it had pockets though.
That's a good price, hope you get the chance to get it out soon. 🏕
Just ordered a Lanshan 1 Pro, which being single skin is closer to the Lunar Solo. Doubt I'll be using it till next summer, as my 'go to' tent is my Luxe Hexpeak V4A, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the Lanshan performs.
Good Luck with the Lanshan 1 Pro. The Luxe Hexpeaks look bombproof. I'll be reverting to my Trailstar over winter.
Have you tried SMD Deschutes plus?

Thank you for your comparison review. On the back of it I purchased the Lanshan using the link you provided. I like the SMD idea of fastening the door tabs on the hook and prussic knot.
The Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo tent is more like a Lanshan 1P Pro tent, than a Lanshan Flame's Creed. Lanshan Pro is also single skin (wall) tent.
Correct, I've since bought the Pro 1. Can't remember if it was available at the time or making this video.
Cheers Fred, you're spot on about the space. Since making the video a new Lanshan Pro has been released which is even more similar to the Lunar Solo.
Quite easy with PowerDirector though.
Hi robin, just seen the Lanshan Pro, it looks the dogs..SMD must be seriously worried. A
You've got a point, Lanshan's seem to be extremely popular. You used to have to pay top dollar for a ultra light tent.
I have been using my Lanshan in the Cairngorms for months, holds well in the wind and terrain. All I had to do was change the pegs.
That's good to know Andrew, the pegs looked a bit lightweight for Scottish weather, I'd swap them over too.
The vestibule goes OVER the guyline on the Lunar Solo. That's why the top was flapping with the guyline being under it.
That was mentioned before and I tried it back in the day and it didn't work unfortunately.
@@WalkWithWallace Was that also going under the vent opening? That's where it gets its support.

@@WalkWithWallace cheers dude
@@spo72 no probs, hope you get on with the tent, I love mine. 😁
"The multiple panel design on the Lanshan is the reason why it has a better pitch than the Lunar Solo."
Actualy, it is because he put the front guyline over the vestibule instead of under it. The Lunar Solo pitches fine if you do that.
The front guy line goes inside the Lunar Solo vestibule. You had it n the outside, and that's why it sagged.
Cheers, someone else also mentioned that and will try that next time.
Also, you can gat more ventilation in your Lunar Solo without opening a door by pulling the prusik knot up the guy line, inverting the vestibule about 1/2 way up. Still waterproof but door shut....

Great point!! Love it! ✊🇺🇸
I have the lanshan tent and camped out one night in my backyard when it was raining and it leaked up threw the floor of the tent and also leaked in the guide out areas. Not impressed at all.
I wouldn't be either Steve, this is one of the few negative feedback I've seen on the Lanshan. Did you return it or get a refund?
Maybe you didn't seam seal it?
Did you seam seal it first?
@@petervarley1029 you shouldn't have to seal the groundsheet. 🤔
Good review mate of both tents
Cheers Stevie. 😊
Excellent review! That's quite an accent you've got there. I needed subtitles for some of it lol.
Haha. Cheers Sam. That's an Edinburgh accent.
which language is this?
English (Scottish accent).
@@WalkWithWallace :-)
From 11/11 you will be able to get Lanshan 1 in Flame's Creed colour version for just £65 from Ali, so if considering to purchase Lanshan, wait a little:)
Cheers for the heads up. 😁
Worst mistake Six Moons made was outsourcing manufacture to China - this is the result and now they are suffering. I have a Luna Solo LE and its a great tent but now I stear clear of things made in China (not easy !)
That ie disappointing given MLD and Henry Shires still manufacture in the US.
@@WalkWithWallace Yep its not brilliant which is why I bought a Zpacks Plexamid
great stuff, both awesome. if ya prepared to dig into ali pay and import one then lanshan is a good option. works well with a high pitch (130-140cm). only had it up to 40mph winds, was great... tho for foul weather def seam seal the mid panel guy outs😜
I've told Kev to get it sealed. 😁
Both great tents and since making this, the Lanshan Pro has came out.
@@WalkWithWallace had eye on the new single version but wallet says nooooo🤣 both just need a big full size door, kinda duplex style
@@andymci3246 😂 Aye to much gear shopping during lockdown.
Good comaprison video mate. Atb
Cheers Ray. 👍🏼
How tall are you as I’m 6’2” and struggle in one person tents
I'm 5'10". Lanshan definitely too small for you. The Lunar Solo may suit though. 🤔
The £140 3-man Pyramid tent by 3F UL might suit you... huge inside. 160 pole too so it's quite high.
The Six Moons is a better tent if you want it to last and be big enough to fit your kit, the Lansham is better value.
I'm not convinced the SMD is much better quality to be honest. I've got the Lanshan 1 Pro now and prefer it to the SMD. 🤔
GREAT VIDEO _ SHORT MUTCH INFORMATION - FRESH ! GOOD MAN ; )
Thank you. 😊 🏕 👍🏻
Don't forget the TAX you pay for importing the tents. Ta.
True, thankfully I've managed to avoid the import charges to date. Element of luck there. 😬
Nice one cheers mate!!!
Thanks Jodz. Are you in the market for either tent?
@@WalkWithWallace yeah I was looking at getting a one man tent and thinking about the six moons and boom seen your video and possibly go for the flames creed one and give it a go.....thanks again
@@gonewild1220 nice one Jodz, both are decent tents, long term the Lunar Solo may last longer. But the price of Lanshan makes it a good option.
But you know why the SMD is more expensive...they did all the Research and Development. The Lanshan just copie paste that... If we keep buying the cheaper copy paste stuff the companies that actually come up with the good ideas will extinct...
Fair point, can't disagree with that.
Both tents are made in China, so that should help rule out the choice by manufacturing origin
Having said that, the Lansham may be a great option if the following 2 criteria are met:
1) You are on a tighter budget.
horrible english... is it english?? :D

A pity that you don't speak a more accessible English... Your videos could be useful for more people...
I can't help my Scottish accent. But I'll bear that in mind and try and speak a bit clearer in future videos.
