I also live in the Tri State ,have been to prison and have been "around" the street life most of my life so there's a few questions I'd love to ask. I'm interested to see how they still work with the DeCavs and the Patriarcas, as well as Detroit. Seems like most of it is with Philly. But Cleveland is hardly around anymore, it's like 8 guys and they're all just drug dealers
We need a part 3! I could listen to this for days. I hope the reason he cant talk about certain things cause hes writing a book. Kinda sounds like it as he keeps saying hell be able to discuss it coming up.
I’m going back to these original interviews after watching a few mba & button man episodes. Really good stuff, good questions, good interviewer, and John is a damn good speaker and story teller. Bravo
One thing I would have loved to hear and something that isn't touched on often is the relationships (if any) that exist between new York and other families, such as Chicago or Philly. A very very interesting listen nonetheless.
You asked John about how much he was earning. I'm sure you know this Tom. Mafiosi life is great wealth with periods of being broke. Its a cycle. Just like drug dealers. Salut!
Great interview and John P mentioned how another guy who was interviewed ( Gene) stole over 300k from the Bananno’s and “ they were furious “. Have to wonder if that was a major reason for Gene to have flipped.
The interviewer asked why a mob guy would risk his freedom for 15k per month? What he doesnt understand is being a mob guy isnt just about money, its about the lifestyle and the respect and validation that comes with it. He wasnt raised in a italian/ blue collar area where the mob had a big presence so he doesnt understand how these guys grow up and how it seems like a normal occupation in a way. The interviewer may be Italian but he certainly didnt grow up around it.
Exactly what I’m saying, he was getting $15k a month and when it’s over. He couldn’t go back to Patsy etc after he flips as well as will hurt his earning ability after. What I was trying to say was the $15k from the government worth it in the short term to blow up your life. Also if it’s not just about the money then another reason for not taking the $15k. I feel I may have not conveyed that correctly
I don’t think anyone goes into it thinking it is going to end, but very few of them either don’t spend considerable amount of time in jail, end up dead or in witness protection , so it really is short term power and money, for a horrible future
The interviewer has had a lot of priviledge. He doesnt get a lot of these guys at most graduated high school and have zero skills. Only somebody not in touch with reality would question why someone would risk his freedom for 15 k a month.
I think the guest needs to be allowed to talk more and not interrupted quite as often. And the interviewer needs to be more succinct in asking questions. I get that the interview needs directing and managing it at times the interruptions were off putting. Constructive criticism.

I heard in a recent one u getting better at not interrupting and yeah it's very noticeable, a current one and this one. There is a way to ask a question during a story without pulling the emergency brake on the speaker. Wait for a pause and just throw in a question with the least words possible. In this one, you totally stop the convo and make an announcement you need to ask a question that sets the scene although many dont seem to be very topic related. And then you talk very slow and preface the question and in the end it leaves pennisi less likely to pick back up where he was before the interruption. Just constructive criticism.
