    This one had me rolling! 🤣 It was super fun, and I even learned something. I remember when you made the palm one and got all the crap for it. Guess that one worked out ok in spite of all the armchair quarterbacking. Inspired to make my own mallet this time around. Doesn't have to be fancy, just has to be able to whack stuff with. Time to go knock crap off my benches now. Thanks for sharing!

      I literally laughed out loud on that one. And "literally" in the literal sense, not the way the kids are using it these days.

    At 7:32 you mentioned “what is this thing...fistules...”.in walnut, you primarily see that in young twigs and branches in the pith. In a lateral (longitudinal) cut you will see that the pith is chambered. Occassionlly these show up in the older xylem (wood) as seen here. It is not a flaw nor disease nor insect damage...just part of the wood.

    Kudos to you for making more than one of those mallets. I've tried a couple times to do "production work" in my shop and it bores me to tears. My brain keeps yelling "You've done this, you know where it ends up." I mean, I have good intentions, but I'm easily distracted.

    Dave:
    Thank for your mallet lesson!
    The proper name for that carpenter's protector, according to Wikipedia is:
    "A goniometer is an instrument that either measures an angle or allows an object to be rotated to a precise angular position.
    The term goniometry derives from two Greek words,
    gōnia, meaning angle, and metron, meaning measure.".

    turned out very neat.
    whenever I wedge the slot, I drill a hole at the bottom of the slot, which acts as a split stopper. I also do this on the wedged mortise and tenon joints etc

    • @MakeSomething
      @MakeSomething  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ahh, great tip! Thanks!!

    • @griffinmakes
      @griffinmakes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm guessing the order of operation is drill the hole, then cut the slit?

    • @TigerCarpenter
      @TigerCarpenter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@griffinmakes yes that's the correct sequence.
      and make sure you don't drive the wedge below the hole profile because you would still split the table leg or the handle, ...ideally the sharp end of the wedge should end in the middle of that circle. you actually can achieve that by marking the line on the wedge that tells you how deep you can safely drive it in.

Would look pretty sick, especially if you could find some colors that react with the black lights in spaceship mode.
