Joe has said in interviews that the primary inspiration was the film Point Blank, starring Lee Marvin. Each of the middle novels in fact are inspired by a different movie genre film.
The Heroes - All quiet on the Western Front
    Red Country - The Unforgiven

I couldn’t agree more with you on everything! Exactly how I felt about the book myself . I was so excited going into it to get a female character as the lead protagonist and thought that she had really good traits that could have been developed more but she ended up feeling like a side character that I couldn’t connect to fully as well . Shivers was the star of the book and his whole arc was my absolute favorite part . The novel did drag for me as well and I had to go for the audio book to keep me engaged in the middle parts . I feel like maybe sometimes editors are reluctant to cut from books of big name authors . Also something else I found a bit weird (and this might just be me ) but I found it a bit unbelievable that Monza after going through all those horrible injuries was still like super hot . I mean I understand that her whole demeanor can be sexy and she has been really really attractive her whole life but she is described as being so broken after the injuries that I think it would have been ok for her to be a little bit like Glokta and her physical charm wouldn’t be the first thing every man would notice you know .

Great review - also JA provided me with one of the most memorable author book signing events I've been to from the book he signed to the hardcore fans that did a rap for him (three guys that had travelled most of the UK to attend nearly all his signings 😂)

Such a good review, thank you!!
I had the same feelings about it! I couldn’t connect at all with Monza (unfortunately!) I wish she would have been a little more funny or relatable like most of the others, they all had traits that I loved (and hated of course;). All in all though, still a great read and one of my favorites this year!

I'm so glad you've continued on with Abercrombie. It's SO GOOD!! Keep going!!🎉🎉🎉
I can see why you feel like it's a Shivers story vs a Monza story. I loved it either way tho. Lol

Completely agree with the pacing issues. BSC is with The Blade Itself as my least favourite First Law entry. I also didn't connect to any of the characters except for Shivers, he is magnificent in it lol. Look forward to your thoughts on The Heroes!

Loved Best Served Cold, didn't really feel the drag with pacing but I reckon that might be as I listened to it on Audiobook and Steven Pacey's narration is just so damn good. Also, do you have Goodreads?

I agree about the Booker longlist. I hated Orbital and didn't even finish Headshot because I knew I wasn't going to like it after 60 pages. Wild Houses, Safekeep, and James were the ones I have liked so far. Maybe I need to get more into Joe Abercrombie haha

I wonder, while you are reading a novel are you kind of out lining in your head what you are going to say about it or do you read it, then access what you have read?

This is my least favorite of the first world. I felt like the revenge and Monza were kind of one note. Still good, but pales in comparison to the others. And UGH what is up with the Booker long list. Dreadful.
