@@ranzee I sorted it now. Couldnt figure out the gate part with the cables at 1st. Yes i did VCF-VCA with EG. at 1st the Attenuators for control did nothing but after watching your other vid about the Beh Sequencer which helped me more, all fell in to place.

I recently saw a video by Tim Shoebridge who after reviewing the system 112 dual VCO wrote to Behringer about the VCO's ability to drift out of tune over octaves and apparently they discovered that some early versions of the module had tuning problems due to some components provided by their suppliers that did not meet specifications. This has been corrected with all new shipping versions of this module but there could be some of the early versions of this module in retailer's inventory. So best to test this module after purchase for tuning problems and get it replaced under warranty
Hi Mark. I made this video back in July 2020. Tim's video was later on in October 2020. Immediately after I made my video I put in a support ticket with Behringer. They gave me some bad responses at first. However, after Tim's video (which you'll notice I've also commented on) - I reached out to Behringer again - and they were gracious to send me a replacement module. There are updates on my channel about this where I show the differences between the two modules as I was able to keep the original. The newer module works as we'd expect. Now some 14 months later - this information should be well documented.
Great stuff Ranz. I watch with interest having started to collect the Boland System 100 modules. I have the Dual VCO, VCA & VCF at present. I have two nifty cases but I'm using them for dreadbox Chromatic modules and dreadbox white line modules, although I could swap out one of them. Can't wait for the next instalment of your journey down Ranzee Street.

I just got the Behringer 921 VCO. The tuning is fine but there is a small screw on the back to adjust the tracking scale. Have you checked round the back of the 112 to see if it has it? - could fix your pitch tracking problem

Thank you for the quick overview. Unfortunately I just missed a comparison between soft sync and hard sync, for which I've been searching for the last days. (I haven't found any explanation for Roland/Behringer system 100m neither in the manual nor by googling...) While "hard sync" is clearly defined for an oscillator, this is not for "soft sync". Have you maybe checked with your oscilloscope what's happening to the waveform when it is synced? E.g. at some oscillators the direction of the wave is changed, but I don't know if this is the case for the Roland/Behringer.
SYNC synchronises the freq of a VCO with the freq of another VCO. By sync'ing 2 VCOs you are able to create waveforms that cannot be created with a single oscillator. If the SYNC switch is set to SOFT - the VCO syncs perfectly to the frequency that is input from the SYNC IN jack. If the SYNC switch is set to HARD, the VCO syncs to an integer ratio of that frequency - example: 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 1/1, 4/3, 3/2 or 2/1. I have never been able to confirm this with Behringer - but that's essentially what the original Roland System-100m did.
I'm also thinking of getting one of these. But I'm not so happy with the tuning issue i read about. I have a Neutron at that works like a charm (VCO1 in fixed mode so it is always in tune). I replaced the filter of the neutron with the Behringer 121 dual VCF and boy that sounds good. So I don't know if I really need this VCO. It is nice to have everything in the same 100m style format though.
Hi Ron. My tuning has recently come good - I don't know why - but it has. Anyway - that probably isn't the best outcome in anycase. You could always get a Roland 512 dual vco oscillator - or checkout Frequency Central - as they also do System-100 modules. Best of luck!
@@ranzee I was looking at the roland VCO. It is a bit pricy. The fun of the Behringer one is that it is so damn cheap. Anyway, I'll give it a shot with the Behringer. Having to calibrate it every now and then is not a huge issue. I

@@InvertedPopesMusic I'm not as experienced with the Moog Modular stuff - it is slightly different to the Roland way - their envelopes are different - they don't use standard tuning - etc etc. So this will be worth a deep look.
Just got a 112 dual VCO today. Why is there no simple 1V/octave input? Or is this not meant to be used with a keyboard at all? If you put the 1V/octave from the keyboard into one of the 3 inputs at the bottom even at 10 can you be sure the module isn't reducing the CV even if by a small amount which will blow your keyboard tuning.To be clear it's the row of 3 small trimmer pots along the bottom of the module that worry me as even at 10 is the VCO seeing the full pitch voltage? Kinda thinking of abandoning my plans now perhaps this isn't what I thought it was i.e. it's for making noises not actually playing notes from a keyboard...
After I did this video, some months later, Behringer released a hardware revision of the 112 - it fixes the tuning issues. I haven't had any issues with it since. Bear in mind that all of these retro-style analog synth components are modelled after 1970's technology - we can't expect them to work like the modern gear :) which is the charm :)
@@Digiphex yeah - I haven't touched the trim pots underneath yet (which you would use for calibration) - However, I did use the Klavis Caltrans with it - and that may have woken up some electrons ;) hehe.

@sneakydisco Yeah it's got problems. I talked to someone today for whom it seems rock solid however there are complaints of this very thing on Muffwiggler and Tony Allgood decided to take a look and see why. Hence the detailed breakdown.
Great demo. Shame about the tracking. I read on different forums that it needs to heat up quite long time to track properly, don’t know if that helps. Otherwise I think they should replace it for a new one, shouldn’t be that bad tracking from factory. I own the filter and it’s really great, and I’m getting the other modules too.

Very informative reviews on the behringer series. I'm ordering the Nifty bundled case and, as a newbie, just wanted some recommendations on a good third or fourth starter module to simulate ambient, atmospheric type sounds... I see lots of beginner vids on the dreadbox series but curious as what the behringer line has to offer. Appreciate any feedback

Re the Keystep - if it's like the BeatStep Pro (and I assume that it is///) then you can calibrate the scaling in the software (I have no idea how accurate it is I have never done this on the BSP...). I remember that the orgina; Pro-one never tracked fully over 5 octaves when CV via an old kenton converter, about 3 octaves was the best I managed. Sounds like the module needs scale and range adjusted. I think this can be done on the Keystep, but that limits the control options. www.synthfool.com/docs/Roland/system100m/Roland100mServiceManual.pdf This is the original service manual. I suspect the Behringer modules have the same adjustment points. The only hard part will be clipping onto the lead of the resistor is harder with SMD devices. Liked the waveforms- they look solid- not much distortion of the shapes. Have fun!
It's the 112 VCO that's the problem, not the keystep - I had one and it's tracking was so bad, going badly flat as you go up the scale. I sent it back and my replacement is possibly even worse: Mine goes 31 cents flat for 1 octave, after 2 octaves it's flat to a G# at 37 cents sharp and after only 3 octaves it's a G#!!! The oscillator is a semitone flat after only 3 octaves making it musically unusable!!! By comparison, my original Roland System-100m 112 vco tracks 6 octaves easily. As does my Doepfer and FCUK analog VCO's. The scaling and tracking should be factory calibrated.
Cheers for that. Bit of a bummer about the pitch tracking, maybe there is a fix. Fingers crossed. Looking forward to the in-depth on the 112, as well as your thoughts on the 140.
Cheers megamarkd :) It's coming! I'm working with a module named Klavis CalTrans which will hopefully help with the tuning issues. I haven't gone into the calibration side yet, as I've decided to wait until Behringer respond with some engineering instructions.
@@ranzee . If it is 100% like for like a circuit copy then there should be three trimmers for adjusting the tuning. 1 should be initial frequency 2 should be the 1/v oct width adjust and last should be a high frequency trimmer which you would normally adjust last.
Is that a MAX 4 Live scope plugin @RANZEE . I was looking for a good scope for Ableton, or is there one in Live 10 now? Thanks! I’ve not got any Eurorack, just watching videos to see what the Behringer stuff can do, as it seems like the best way to get into ER without leading to total financial ruin!

So the story is, with my DIY synth the exponenetial converter I have are based on the system Roland 100/ jp 8 so this may help in calibration. th-cam.com/video/VCUJTiZNPIg/w-d-xo.html I was going to do a video on calibrating the keystep actually (not the new one). Great vid man. I’m wondering if the tuning issue is a Behringer thing? I have a Neutron and it’s exactly the same. Totally unusable outside of half an octave either side of the tuned note. I use a Keystep Pro and have tried both CV and midi into the Neutron and the results are sadly identical. There is a way to calibrate the oscillator internally but a scope is probably needed for this. Again, top vid dude and a new sub here for thee. Peace ✌️
ranzee I have mate, it’s just a guitar style tuner. There’s a trim pot on the circuit board behind each oscillator. I’m gonna look into it this weekend...
The tuning issue IS a Behringer thing. Tim Shoebridge did a video on it and spoke to Behringer. Turns out there was a small manufacturing issue on the first units causing the tuning issue. He also has a 2nd unit and confirmed that the issue is fixed (well no analog stuff is ever 100% perfect - but after warming up for 15 mins it was perfectly acceptable) You think Behringer would offer to replace the early units - maybe they don’t make enough money? 🤨
Is the 2nd oscillator cv input normalized to the 1st one? i.e. Control both from 1 v/o input. If you tune it to C and change the range (on the module, not the keystep) will it stay in tune? My old Pittsburgh oscillators went a full semi-tone up over 3 octaves so this doesn't seem far fetched. Are there tuning trimpots on the back?
@@ranzee or not? I thought they said something like that on the Behringer Channel that it brings to the closest note value. I am concerned now because I ordered this vco already :(
@@ahzootube don't stress mate - they do calibrate and tune to 5 octaves quite OK. There's trim pots underneath the module which we can adjust - or you can just get yourself a VCO calibration module like Klavis CalTrans (which ever is easier)

The oscillator is way off. And octave sure isn't an octave on mine when I flip the octave switch.

Is the 2nd oscillator cv input normalized to the 1st one? i.e. Control both from 1 v/o input. If you tune it to C and change the range (on the module, not the keystep) will it stay in tune?
My old Pittsburgh oscillators went a full semi-tone up over 3 octaves so this doesn't seem far fetched. Are there tuning trimpots on the back?

@@ranzee or not? I thought they said something like that on the Behringer Channel that it brings to the closest note value. I am concerned now because I ordered this vco already :(
@@ahzootube don't stress mate - they do calibrate and tune to 5 octaves quite OK. There's trim pots underneath the module which we can adjust - or you can just get yourself a VCO calibration module like Klavis CalTrans (which ever is easier)
