Thanks for your plain & simple video, pbj. That's pretty extreme corrosion of that impeller of yours. Mine's a '95 5.2L, & I'm dealing with overheating on the highway at high speeds when pulling even smaller trailers, which is usually indicative of a semi-clogged radiator (sediment buildup at the bottom, clogging some tubes), so I'm going to go ahead & replace the radiator, since it's 30 years old this year. And after watching your video, I'm going to consider the water pump as contributing to the problem as well. So thanks for the vid of your Jeep's old pump & its corroded-away impeller you posted. That helped.

Glad I tripped over this video. Apparently I'm not the only person to find that problem. My bro inlaw's jeep would overheat in less than a mile, did everything, it was the exact same problem. The impeller on the water pump, the fins were GONE! Bearings + seal were still good. EZ way to investigate would be to take the small hose off the t-stat housing and run engine for a second, you 'should' get sprayed with coolant, so only do this on a cold engine. No spray = no impeller. Can't look in the radiator to watch coolant flow

I changed mine in 98 grand Cherokee, if the heater isn't blowing hot air that's a dead give away the pump isn't circulating ,but most of the time there is a leak at the borrow weep hole, make sure the engine is flushed and only use the correct coolant or it will turn into gravy, comen problems are bad temp sensors, radiator caps, and dirty coolant

These 4.0 engines are very sensitive to coolant levels as well, make sure the ratio is correct ( anifreze and water) after flushing add some red line water wetter or be cool additive, and use distilled water from a grocery store not tap water

Thanks so much! Going to change thermostat, rad cap, water pump all today because of overheating on the interstate and having to have the jeep towed twenty miles. The jeep doesn't really overheat unless it is super hot outside and the rpm gets up a alot like interstate driving so i've been worried I am pulling the pump or something for no reason and waste my time and money. But since you mentioned the heat/ac issue I think I am going to go ahead and check out my pump. Your pump proved that the professionals in the other videos on TH-cam aren't necessarily correct when diagnosing water pump issues. No leak, No noise, doesn't really mean no problem. Only real way to find out is to look at it.

You convinced me. I have to take a look at this. My heater works great now, that it's not freezing, but it's not that warm when it is. I recently see the temperature gauge climbing on hot days. Water is flowing, but I think maybe not enough..Thanks for the encouragement.

thanks for this useful video, same symtoms i have with my 87 jeep cherokee: no leaks,no noise, just overheating at city speeds, but good cooling in freeway, i removed the heater hose that comes from the water pump and with engine running the flow was as poor as taking a piss :/ . so in my doubt of the water pump failing, this video convinced me :) thanks #pbjrock

I hope this helps.. If your pump impeller is gone, just watch your radiator for clogs.. All the sediment ended up clogging my radiator... Hopefully it's just your pump, Good Luck!

Crazy dude. It might be the original. 14 years and xxx,xxx miles. There is a reason scheduled maintenance includes water pumps and etc. The blades literally rusted off. I wouldn't worry about them they'll be particle size soon.

@jeepguy.. Coolant overflow is caused by overheating.. Or overfilling.. if this isn't happening because you just filled it then you need to go through the system... A working temp. Gauge is important , but you can get a cheep infer red hand held temp sensor and point it at different parts of the engine to get very accurate temps... You can start by checking/replacing the thermostat, and honestly a new waterpump isn't too expensive ($30ish) and not hard to replace...

..I just wanted to add that I eventually had to change my radiator too..(see follow up video "bad radiator") .. As I found out, if your coolant is crappy, and brown from rust as mine was, ultimately your radiator becomes a coolant filter, and no amount of flushing will unclog it...

Crazy how the engine kept cool just from that rusted out impeller.....probably thermocycleing was the only thing keeping it cool. Same old old tractors had radiators but no water pump and just relied on the water to move via the hot engine and cool radiator temp difference.

Exact same symptoms here on my GC. Heading out now to have a look. Thanks for the vid.

I'm at this point with mine as well. Replaced the radiator, thermostat, hoses, coolant, and it still overheats.

Does your fan work and or the switch??? Was radiator leaking, if not why the change???

Lol, same problem. Worked like clockwork and yesterday it almost cooked and i saw the coolant Pissin' out under the car. My heat hasn't worked for a while and that was also the first hot day. Regards from sweden.

Holy cow, my water pump looked exactly like that when I pulled it! Go Jeep for not exploding on us when we don't pay attention, lol!

Also have a 99 Cherokee Sport. If your engine is getting too hot your electric fan will start up fairly often, particularly when you're idling. Check your radiator fluid for corrosion and just pull the pump, I paid $36 at Autozone.

That's crazy man! I have a 1999 Cherokee Sport and I think I might have that issue too. Do they often make noise when they're going bad? thanks

If your pump has been in there for a while, I'd change it, it's not a hard job and the pumps aren't that expensive....

I have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee limited with the v8 engine. My question is how do I change out my water pump thats leaking? meaning tools needed and do I need a tool to remove the fan to get to the water pump? And the steps I need to do in order to get to the water pump. And also install it back in!! thks

I have a 96 jeep cherokee. My thermostat in the cluster doesn't work, but when I drive for a considerate amount of time and I park coolant comes pouring out of the reservoir. Do you think my pump is out?

  • @pbjrock
    @pbjrock  12 ปีที่แล้ว

No you don't have to remove the radiator, there's enough room to get the pump out, once the fan and fan shroud are out of the way..
