    A girl I grew up with lived next to Denali National Park for nearly 20 years. She raised sled dogs and was a master seamstress. Her cabin was off the road, only accessible by snow machine or quads, and dog sled, of course! She lived a life full of adventures in the wilderness of Alaska. Last year she moved back to Washington state, she was diagnosed with a progressive neural disorder that was terminal. In April she flew to Switzerland to access the legal euthanasia program and she chose to end her amazing life. I am grateful to have been part of your story, Becky. I understand your decision, but I miss our long conversations.

    This is definitely not the last community in a National Park. The Nümü Tümpisattsi have fought for almost 100 years to maintain their community within Death Valley National Park and continue to live there today despite all of the government's hostile efforts.

It just barely covered the community (which is not at all the last to live in a national park, see the Timbisha Shoshone in Death Valley), and after all the discussion about the glacier melting, they missed a perfect opportunity to talk about how the melting is being driven by climate change. Instead we heard a cute anecdote about sailing on the pro-glacial lake. A serious 'Don't Look Up' moment from CBS trying to keep the impacts of the climate crisis lighthearted.

    Your scope of how dire or not of a climate situation we are in is totally irrelevant. We humans only live about 100 years at best, and this planet has been here for billions of years, our scope and scale of the climate situation is completely invalid. Even with the BEST data and instrumentation available today, we cannot understand the full scope of the environment. To speak so definitively on the climate situation is intellectually dishonest. We can extrapolate and make guesses and model what may happen, but even that is just not enough compared to the grandiosity of this planet's history. Humans way too into themselves to think they can grasp something so spectacular and grand as Earth's history.

    That's my favorite national Park. Cool place down a dead end road that somehow isn't too crowded. The restaurants are nice and the glacier is accessible. And if you want to drive in to town you have to pay several hundred dollars for a bridge pass. And they won't sell you one you have to walk across and hike in if you're not a local.

    Huh I’m used to some people living in a state park, there’s a couple house that got lucky and are technically not on park property. Though the road they are on goes up at stuck a steep angle to get on the main road-you have to hold your brake the whole time stopped because the car will start rolling down.

    Went there in 2021. You can drive there- 6+ hours from Anchorage, despite what the video says. Its just the last mile is a walk path, unless you hire a private shuttle (almost like the local "Uber") to take you into town. Rooms are booked solid in summer, as you can imagine.

    I think the story fell flat, would be interesting to get to know the "community" (how do they live, how they get their groceries, is there a doctor, dentist? a restaurant? Post office....etc) instead it was again, a whole bunch of already known information about the national park

  • @JonSkinner1944
    @JonSkinner1944 ปีที่แล้ว

    This story is not entirely true, there another community in a national park. In the city of San Francisco A former US Army base called Presidio. Started by the Spanish in 1776 and then took over by the United States Government in the 1850s. U.S. Army until the mid-1990s now has full-time residence year round.
