Riding the Hobo Railroad 8-11-18

  • In the midst of summer, I decided that I would try something I've never done despite living in New Hampshire all my life. The Hobo Railroad has been one that I've heard about and seen online and once in real life before this, but I never gave it much thought to ride as the Winnipesaukee Scenic is closer to me and for railroads in the White Mountains I've typically relied on Conway for that.
After deciding to chase the Cafe Lafayette, going to the Hobo was an obvious choice, what was not planned until I got to the station was the ride, which was $17, so I went for it. Filming bits and pieces was my first strategy on the ride from Lincoln to Woodstock, while I was trying to position my camera for the ride back, a incredibly friendly conductor allowed me to place my camera in the doorway.
The ride itself consists of plenty of encounters with the Pemigewasset River, as well as views of the forest surrounding the track, an excellent view in foliage season I'm sure!
    Please enjoy!

I never knew this RR existed! I see they have the Budd RDC's which I rode many times from Gloucester to Boston as a kid to see games at the Boston Garden. I might have to take a trip up there some day.

Great memories from the sounds of it! Wish that was still the norm but what can you do. Anyways the Hobo Railroad is owned and operated by the Plymouth and Lincoln Railroad, who also operate Winnipesaukee Scenic, both railroads use the same type of passenger equipment, and both utilize switchers as power, the only difference really being the route, which traverses the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee rather than the forests of the White Mountains, might also be worth checking out!

The RDC’s are a bit bumpy since they are unbalanced. They had their engines removed which isn’t how they are intended to run.

GREAT video, I have been on the HoBo RR train many times from the 90's to 2005 and I never had a long train ride, as I recall the train I was on only went to the Jack-O-Lantran resort.

old64goat thank you! And they do only run to Woodstock, during the Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train runs they’ll go a bit further down, adds about 15 minutes per trip. Plenty of longer trips in NH, notch train by Conway is the longest going at least 5 and a half hours, definitely recommend it if you can!

Thank You very much, sadly I am retired and too old to drive that distance to N.H. but we loved it up there and sure do miss it.

@@old64goat well at least you got to see 1186 in action. That’s a very rare occurrence nowadays. Same with 958 now. ;(

Do you have any videos actually? 1186 is rather rare to see at all since back in the day, the hobo had little to no interest to railfans.

Would be nice if they used the 1921 or their other equipment at least. I know they also use another locomotive from time to time but it’d be nice to see the 1921 in service

Cooker Pro 1921 is currently in private hands and from what I hear needs work, they moved her up to Lincoln a while back so they may be working on her in the off season, or they’re just keeping her up there for storage, they tend to just use switchers though for their shorter wheelbase, the tracks are full of sharp turns and it makes for less maintenance later on. For special events though I’d love to see them use her!

Flash a couple of years and 1921 hasn’t been used yet. Also, 958 is now 2nd backup to 1590 and 105. They might run these engines again, but do know the chances are getting lower and lower.

    How old is this train

    • @merrimacksacoproductions4497
      @merrimacksacoproductions4497  4 ปีที่แล้ว

The diesel locomotive powering the train is Maine Central S1 958, built in October of 1949, the train is usually made up of 3 cars, 1 RDC railcar from the 1960s, and a couple Erie Lackawanna coaches from the 1920s, the cars don’t have a specific build date so I can only narrow them down to the decade, they had privately owned Boston and Maine caboose C86 built in 1959, was a rare sighting only occasionally placed on the train per owner request

Jmream2 Jmream in a way I was, Winnipesaukee and Hobo Railroad (technically they’re the same Railroad) like to do push pull operations, they placed a headlight, cow catcher, bell and an air whistle on their last passenger car for use in crossings, while the conductor stands on the platform and spots for the engineer who’s still at the rear of train in the locomotive.
The rides are usually a hour and a half, the first leg of the trip moves from Lincoln to Woodstock and the second is the return trip, I did collect some footage on the first part of the trip, but I decided to only use the return trip footage more for consistency purposes.

When do they use 1921 or 1186? I want to see a video of 1186 Running because it has a LESLIE RS5T!

AllertorSiren05 1921 is an extreme rarity as she’s a privately owned locomotive and if every locomotive Hobo has is down, she’ll be used, however (and this is also the reason why 302 is rarely used) the tight turns of the White Mountain Branch leaves heavy wear on longer locomotives, hence the large fleet of shorter switcher locomotives.
As for 1186, I have no idea on her usage but i believe she was one of the first locomotives Hobo put into service, it is likely she’s relegated to backup status while the newer locomotives such as 958, 1012, and 1590 are used in main service.
