  • Welcome back to Wood 'n' Stuff w/ Steve French! It's that time of year again: Time for Summer's Woodworking's 3rd annual Birdhouse Challenge! For my entry this year, I present to you the Log Cabin Birdhouse, an easy-to-build project requiring only one tool: a hand saw. While you're gandering at my birdhouses, you might want to also check out my entry from last year (2014); it's "Chip", my life-sized articulated wooden robot. His head is a finch house. • Awesome life-sized woo... Check him out; it turned out really cool!

    Thank you for watching! Thanks also to Brian Gidney of Summer's Woodworking. And thank you to all of the sponsors who each offered up great prizes for the event.
    Please take a moment to like, comment, share and subscribe. Tons more woodworking videos to come. You may want to check out my video back library to see some of the great projects and fun videos I've already posted.

    Great idea, great project and great video. Thanks for sharing your idea, a neat little log cabin styled bird house, which I have to say is the first of its kind that I've ever seen.

      +Professor Branestawm I'm glad you enjoyed it. The idea of a log cabin birdhouse has been done before. It's certainly not unique to me. But it's not one you see too often. Thank you for watching!

    Nice birdhouse. I love the natural material rather than dowels. And hey I got the router attachment for my dremel yesterday, can't wait to play with that! Thanks for sharing another great video.

      +Michelle B I like the way it came out. I've actually been planning to make a stick log cabin at some point (which is why I saved that bundle of sticks a couple months ago). So I figured this would be a great and convenient time to go ahead and tackle that project idea. Thanks for watching. Have fun with the new toy.

    It is beautiful. I note in the comments that you said it was for indoor decor. If anyone made it for outdoor bird use, the door would need to be much smaller and a perch added. I loved it. Thank you

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gail green - Thanks for watching and commenting. Actually though, birds do not need a perch (as people generally tend to believe). The perch is more to give people a chance to watch the birds in action. But even without a perch, birds are perfectly capable of entering a birdhouse or any other suitably sized hole without one. In fact, it's often recommended not to add a perch because it gives predators easier access.

    Great job of up-cycling pruned branches into an awesome birdhouse, buddy...good luck in the competition...Jim.

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jedijim252 Thank you, Jim. Our yard guy had trimmed the bushes on the side of our yard and piled the trimmings out front for the trash collectors. But when I saw it all I was compelled to go through and save most of the usable stuff. Otherwise it would have ended up either incinerated or in the county dump. I'm glad I did so; I got this cool birdhouse and still have a bunch of the sticks to make more. Maybe I'll make another style of log cabin with the rest.
      Actually, since the wood has a natural hole in the center (pith core), I'm thinking of cutting some of it into beads and making some necklaces from it as well. I appreciate your being here!

      +Mark Christopher Oh yeah, great point! Sometimes it's hard to find projects you can do with children. If progress is too slow there's danger of boredom. And if it's too dangerous they may be left out of some operations. Most kids will be ok handling a coping saw or small handsaw to cut [at least] some of the pieces themselves. Cheers back, my friend!

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jason Hockett I'm actually working on that video right now. The face shields are way better than any safety glasses I've ever owned. And it does NOT interfere with hearing protection or the wearing of regular glasses. It only interferes with the unruly shrapnel heading towards your face!

    That's even better than Lincoln logs! Bet you had fun arranging the sticks to fit. I like the interesting rafters you made to hold the roof and angling it for glue up. The little limb sticking out by the front door must be for a sign or water bucket- haha. Would be great if put outside and birds actually lived in it. If kept inside, I'm thinking coco clock?

      One of the rules for the contest was that there be no perch at the opening. And really, they aren't as necessary as one would think. This one was actually built for use as an indoor decor item, so I actually like that it doesn't have a perch.
      But I sort of agree with your opinion though. If I were going to use it as a birdhouse, I'd be inclined to add a perch so that I could watch the bird stand on it. But again, they really aren't as necessary as people think. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +George Trott Between layers there was maybe a 4-6 minutes or so (just enough time to get the next "logs" ready). Though it did sit overnight after gluing up the bottom to give the base time to become one rigid assembly. Then it sat overnight again somewhere near the end of building the walls and when the first side of the roof was done. It sat overnight a final time before applying the other side of the roof.

    Beautiful project. Excellent design!!! Well thought out and presented. *liked*. I have a couple questions:
    1. Since birds are always pecking, do you think the glue would harm them?
    2. Do you have any other ideas for fasteners besides glue?

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching. The glue is pretty much inert once it's dried. And it's difficult to peel away from the wood, so I doubt any would be consumed by birds. You could always nail or screw it all together, I suppose. Or drill holes and wire it together.
      If you make one that you intend to use outdoors and use glue, just make sure to use Titebond III, or epoxy or some other waterproof adhesive. Best of luck to you.

      +Wood 'n' Stuff w/ Steve French Birds do like eating or picking at things like that. Good point! I see a bluejay almost every day picking at my fence that is painted and he eats the paint chips! So weird. I don't want him to so when I replace my fence, I will keep it natural, no stain,paint nothing. I think there is a bees wax I could put on the fence to protect it from the weather etc.... animals are just like people and we all have and do things differently and have habits. lol Animals are people to me or at least, on the same level or even higher in my opinion. They are special. Animals are the best part of this planet.

      @K3LLI3...I am in total agreement with you! Even tho glue may be inert after it's dried (which I do not know to be true or false), and difficult for humans to remove, I am certain that the birds beak would be able to peck off even small portions of it, and ingest it. I feel this way ... if I won't eat it, I won't feed it to my wildlife. I really like Steve's plan, but will use some other form of fasteners.

      Not sure WHY this is showing in my YT notifications NOW, since I see NO recent comments. HOWEVER... I will say this now: I have done MUCH research in the last 5 months, and have discovered that TUNG OIL is non-toxic, and comes highly recommended for woodworkers who make toys for young toddlers who put EVERYthing in their mouths. Please ... DO YOU OWN RESEARH. Don't just go by what *I* say. This, of course is only regarding the finish you may want to put on to preserve the wood. On to what seems to be the *real* issue here and that is regarding the *GLUE*. Steve's words were: *The glue is pretty much inert once it's dried.* He did NOT provide ANY kind of research to back that statement up. Please do not misunderstand ... I am NOT picking on him here. What I AM trying to say is: Don't rely on anyone else's research but YOUR OWN. Personally, I would take the time, as Steve suggested, to drill holes and wire the whole thing together INSTEAD of using glue of ANY kind. So there you have it ... my *opinion*. :-D

    I like the model. I have three suggestions. (1) Use 6 mm dia round dowels available in Dollar stores, (2) use less glue and some nails, (3) Scale down the size to half..

    ok, see those of me that just watch videos and never make... for the excuses that get in the way , can no longer say i didn't have the tools. sheesh one could just break some twigs with their hands and use only glue to put it together and viola I made something. see what a great way to bust the excuses bubble and build a beautiful log cabin for a beautiful bird family. ;-)

      +Audra Flores That's right; The excuses have been eradicated! With a little creativity, you don't need a fully outfitted shops to make all kinds of great projects. This is only one small example. Thank you for watching.

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're hedges from my old back yard. I wish I knew what kind of trees they are. More recent, I made one from a completely different tree (maple, perhaps?). If you're interest in seeing it, check out my "How to make a log cabin birdhouse" (or some similar title) on HomeFixated.com. It's a little different style too.
      Note that I did have to clean off a lot of little side branches. You just don't see that step in the video. Thanks for watching!

  • @martha8253

    I love this idea! Came out so cute but I have one suggestion. Can you make a door in the front and the back? The next one you make. The reason is, birds get attacked so much and they always get killed because their is "no exit doorway or hole for them to escape! I see it all the time because I rescue animals. Raccoons are always sticking their hands into bird houses and clawing the birds to death. It brakes my heart into pieces. I also have another tip if you are putting any birdhouse outside for the birds to nest in. You probably know this but I'll say it anyway, when putting out a birdhouse please make sure to hang it on a branch that can hold the birdhouse securely but not a thick, strong branch that will hold a heavy animal like a cat or raccoon. I tell people this all the time. If you want to, you can watch some TH-cam video's of this actually happening although, I wouldn't advise it if you are saddened by animals getting killed like I am. I hang my birdhouses on a tree and find a branch " away from anything that an animal can climb up and get to it"! Don't put it near a fence or anything predictors can climb and reach the b house. Thank you. With that said, do you make and sell these? I would like to buy one!

    • @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff
      @SteveFrenchWoodNStuff  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Surprisingly, birdhouses don't usually need a lot of cover. Many are built right out in the open. But you definitely do want good drainage. And yes, a refrigerator is a very nice feature to have in a workshop. Unfortunately, I no longer have that shop. And my new shop, which I'm still moving in to, does not have one yet. But I plan on getting a mini-fridge as soon as I can afford to.

    no TOXIC materials such ad paint or GLUE should be used for bird houses. they release fumes and deteriorate their health.
