I can understand the fall winter blues…I enjoy the cozy, but I do understand having to try harder to stay upbeat.

Hi Amber, with 32 count cross stitch fabric, you stitch over 2 threads, so there are 16 stitches per inch.
Love your blankets, that's one nice thing about Fall, it's not to hot to have an afghan on your lap. I don't like losing daylight either, so I think watching football helps, baking more, and planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then the days start getting longer again 😊

Hello Amber it's Racine and I love the fall time because I get into crocheting or knit projects for the season, blanket's, hats, scarf, or fingerless gloves, I ride in a semi truck with my husband, and over the past couple of years I've blessed so people over the road that I've met. With seeing your podcast, you have encouraged me to make different patterns to grow and see how people are blessed when I give what I've made. Thank you for sharing your life with us all.

Hi there! Yes, the gray months are my struggle too. A few years ago I read “Wintering” by Katherine May, and in it she talks about the positive effects that cold water swimming has had on her mental health. Well, I don’t have access to wild water in the winter, so I started a practice of snowbathing, and it has transformed me. I just put on my boots, my mittens, and my bathing suit, and spend five minutes outside in the yard, getting COLD. I don’t understand why it works, but it does. It makes me remember how alive I am! I’m actually looking forward to it, which sounds incredible, but it’s true.

We live off-grid (and just getting established at that) which means BUSY springs and summers. I’ve come to appreciate winter and it’s “slower” pace winter gives. Earlier bedtimes and slower mornings (I homeschool). I spend time in the wee hours after hubby leaves for work and before the kids are up, snuggled in my chair with a lamp, praying and knitting. 😊

Things that bring me joy in the Autumn, baking, my favorite warm drinks, lovely scented candles or even a pot of simmering clove, cinnamon and orange peel, of course my big cozy cardigan and big socks, soft music, and a project or two to keep my hands and mind busy.
I so sorry you had to FROG that beautiful yoke, it's so disheartening, takes the wind out of your sails. There are a lot of beautiful patterns out there that wouldn't require so much extra work, it's like your designing the sweater.

I love everything about fall. I love the crisp, cool mornings with the blue skies in the afternoon. The colors, the smells, the decor, and the comfort foods all just make me happy. To keep my mind from going into a depressive state, which it can go quickly, I find that changing into comfy pajamas, making a cup of flavored tea and sitting with a good book or a craft project helps the evenings go by without discomfort. I try to wear a different pj set each night to have something to which to look forward. In the winter, I love to make homemade soups and breads to eat when it is too cold to go outdoors. I think there is something wonderful about each season, especially living in PA where we have such a variety of weather conditions. Thank you, Amber, for sharing your knitting, crocheting and counted cross stitch! I am beginning to do punch work. I’m starting small with some pre purchased designs, but hope to design a few of my own to create a pillow or cushion cover. I will let you know how that turns out for me. I try to take care of the 5 senses. Smells/taste: a fall candle and a pot of hearty soup on the stove and homemade bread in the oven. The good feels: putting on a cozy sweater or pjs and wrapping up in a soft blanket. Also bundling up and going for a walk outside or playing in the snow. Sight: sitting in front of the fire watching the wind blow the leaves around or watching the snow fall and also binge-watching my favorite shows, Sounds: listening to instrumental music or a good audiobook. My favorite sound would be the giggles of my 2-year-old grandson! :)

Hi Amber! I love autumn and actually don’t mind the shorter days as I find the slow down after the busy gardening season a blessing. We love to winter camp- being an introvert I love that there are less people around. We hike, bike and walk our dogs- I am a runner and I love running in the cooler months. I think my running is what keeps my head in the game! Back at camp we have a 5th wheel and I always light candles and together we enjoy a glass of wine while dinner is simmering. We are actually already booked for Thanksgiving at the ocean (Pacific) where we will cook our turkey outdoors on the picnic table in a portable oven. We have done this in the past and is some of our best memories. Seed catalogs start coming in December so I start my planning and then it’s seed starting time just around the corner. This brings me joy as well. We are unseasonably warm now in the PNW with mid to upper 70’s for the next 10+ days or more. I want to wear my wool! And I am ready for some rain quite honestly. Wow this is long 😬 another great podcast! Thanks friend 😊

Nice to see you so soon Amber. As I live in a sweltering environment in summer, I embrace the cool of autumn and actually spend more time outdoors in nature now than I did during the last of summer. I find it refreshing, and to counter the gray, I burn candles and scents, make soups and bake, and craft all the things I've been imagining while it was too warm to touch yarn. I enjoy fall and winter because I love the cooler weather, less bugs, and the hush that comes over the natural world as everything slows and hibernates. We all go through those "slumps", didn't think you were negative at all, just real 😊 I quite like the shorter days of fall and winter, I love the coziness ❤️ baking, lots of knitting, and fall candles keep me excited about the colder months!
I've heard many others talk about the issues with the birkin pattern. I have it in my favorites but unfortunately don't think I'll ever attempt it for that reason 🫤
I love the color of the ranunculus you're wearing! Thanks for a lovely episode ❣️

Gah I just love seeing these crochet blankets popping up. They are so beautiful. 🧡 We struggle with the darker seasons too in our house. we do try to let the light in and get in it as much as we can. We also try to eat happy foods, even if it's from frozen or whatever bright colors/flavors help. And sometimes we begin our Christmas decor early so we put up twinkle lights and things that last but just bring us joy. ✨️

I like the changing colors in the leaves, wearing cozy sweaters, and enjoying some homemade soup. Your crochet blanket squares are beautiful. I know how to crochet but I haven’t done it for a while. I hope to make a crochet project soon. Cross-stitch and embroidery are also crafts I plan to do this fall. Hopefully these crafts will keep me busy in the fall.

Fall is a lovely time of the year, I don’t like heat over 80😮, I have always loved sweaters my whole life and interestingly I have discovered since I started knitting that all,of the sweaters I wish I could make are ones I have purchased for years, so I am a sweater girl. I nestle in my sewing room come fall and don’t come out until May😳😳😁😁. I live in northern PA and it’s cold here.

Fall and winter are hard for me for the same reason as you! Because of that, I really try to embrace the concept of hygge and make things as cozy and light within my home as possible.
Also, I just have to comment about fixing mistakes in crochet versus knitting. I agree that it is easier to rip back in crochet, but that’s the only way to actually fix a mistake-you have to rip it out! I love that I can drop down and fix a specific spot in my knitting without having to rip back. It’s like magic to me.

    • @alovelyyarn

It's wonderful to see you, Amber. Sorry to hear about your sweater troubles. I feel like I've been fighting my knitting too, recently, but with gloves and mittens!
I love the fall: it has the best and easiest decorations, the colors are just sublime, and it's a time to wind down after a busy summer and make sure I'm all prepped for winter. Summer and fall are the garden and harvest time, and now it's time to continue prepping food but also start really getting back into knitting with more vigor! One thing I love about the shorter days is it really motivates me to get out while the sun is out, and then there's still plenty of time when I get home to putter about doing cozy things. I wish you a very hygge fall!

Thank you for detailing your struggles with knitting- the detailed struggle- which then you said felt like you were being negative. But it's not negative it is the reality of the process. Exploring/sharing the struggle is a way to acknowledge it so you can keep moving and again find the joy knitting brings.
I hear crafters again and again get bogged down because they won't detail the struggle and illuminate it in order to move passed it, instead they get stuck.

Autumn is my favorite season. I love the cooler weather and lower humidity; it makes walking in the morning a lot more comfortable. It's also nice to be able to wear the sweaters I've made. January is the worst month for me because it is so dark and cold and it seems to last forever. I just try to muddle through it. I really like your Ranunculus; such a beautiful color on you. Good to hear from you. I have one of those beautiful wooden darning needle cases - a gift from my sister. I love the crisp, cooler, less humid days of Fall in Northwest Arkansas. The shorter days do get to me in Winter. The good thing about shorter days is more time to craft and create without competition from the gardening and yard work. I try to get outside during the day to feel some sunlight on my face to counter the blues.

I enjoy looking at how nature is shifting into another season as well and appreciate the beauty of leaves turning and the crunch of leaves while walking. It helps putting on my long awaited knits that have been stored away. Colorado has so many sunny days so I don’t mind the shorter days unless I’m driving to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. I look forward to wearing my sweaters and knitting new ones. When I’m in the doldrums and it seems like yet another dreary, overcast day I remind myself of Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Next I have to ensure that I get outside for at least 15 minutes…rain, snow, sleet, etc… I just moved back home to MI from IN where I haven’t lived in 40 years. It’s wonderful to be back near family and friends, but I am up to my eyeballs in boxes that need to be unpacked. I set a timer for a set period of time or set a goal that I will unpack X number of boxes and I stick with it and then I let myself do something fun. I can’t wait for the first snowfall!

During winter is a great opportunity to do stuff with my children because it is cold and gets dark earlier. We bake, read and go to the library. Go for nature walks. I couldn’t believe it when you brought cross stitch out because I have just picked up my cross stitching this past week and I’ve sooo enjoyed stitching on it! I love to knit but sometimes I enjoy a bit of a change in scenery so to speak. I also love your crochet blanket and am thinking I may need to gather some yarn to start one myself. I love crocheting blankets!
I love autumn so much 🍂 I love the colors. I love the crispness in the air. I love getting in the wood pile and getting it all split and stacked and ready for the winter ahead. I love curling up by our wood stove with my coffee and my knitting or devotions. There’s something so cozy about being in my home when the weather is cold. Evenings are longer but my husband is a lobster fishermen so we’re early to bed around here anyway. 🍁🧡

You make autumn sound so cozy! If we every put a sunroom on the back of our house (a plan that's been in the making for years), I told my husband that I want a woodstove out there. We're going to make it a four season room so I can get lots of natural light and the woodstove will be for the cozy factor!

Great podcast, Amber! I love your afghan project. So pretty! As I was watching you talking about the problem with Burkin yoke, my daughter brought down a sweater that I've knitted for myself, but gave to her due to a poor yoke fit (too deep). Alas, she didn't liked the fit either, so it will have to be ripped out. It's another popular design by a well-known designer... I guess the lesson is that it doesn't matter how popular something is, we're all human and make mistakes. I hope your knitting mojo comes back. There is nothing better then snuggle with a knitting (or crochet) project in the evening, with a cup of tea and a candle by your side :)

I love Fall - and we have been having a beautiful, unseasonably warm, one this year. Chilly in the morning/evening and hanging around in the 70’s during the day. It’s crazy. (I’m in the PNW - 90 mi north of Seattle)
For me - I try to get out for walks. Totally mental, but it helps. Even when it’s grey and rainy. Also, meal planning helps - I don’t know why, but it does? Maybe because it means something is usually simmering or baking? I love candles, too but the cat (I know - funny!!) is sensitive to the smells and she starts to itch.
Hope you are well - thank you for posting!! ❤

Fall is actually my favorite season. Although I don’t love the super short days. Some of my favorite things are enjoying fall produce from my local farms like pumpkin, squash, turnip, apples and pears. There is nothing like eating food during its natural harvest time. I also really like to start knitting, crocheting or weaving heavier projects that feel too hot for spring and summer. I’m Jewish, so many of our major holidays happen during the fall. Lastly, I just enjoy the beautiful colors of the leaves here in New England.
