- This is the first episode of "Looking for the ultimate AGP motherboard" where we are going to look at the AsRock AM2NF3-VSTA and AMD Phenom II X4 965.
The processor was overclocked to 4.3Ghz(FSB:240x18:Multiplier), voltage: 1.55v, NB Frequency Multiplier 2640Mhz.
The ram was running in a 1:2 ratio with 5-4-4-10 latencies.
We tested the:
GeForce 3 200Mhz core, 460Mhz memory,
GeForce 4 Ti 4400 275Mhz core, 550Mhz memory,
GeForce 4 Ti 4600 300Mhz core, 650Mhz memory,
Quadro4 980 XGL 297Mhz core, 650Mhz memory,
GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 475Mhz core, 453Mhz memory,
GeForce FX 5900 400Mhz core, 425Mhz memory,
GeForce 6800 325Mhz core, 350Mhz memory,
GeForce 6800 Ultra 425Mhz core, 550Mhz memory,
GeForce 7900 GS 510Mhz core, 700Mhz memory.
No video card was overclocked.

Episode 1, part 1 of 2.
Congrats for the AGP collection, I fall in love with the 7900GS and 5900.
You and me both!
I never knew that AM2+ could be mated to an Nforce3 chipset. This must be about the fastest AGP platform and surely would be fun to play with. I was looking at the 865/875P with AGP and S775 that might support a C2D, but they're pretty rare it seems. It would be nice to see a comparison of the 6800/7900 GPUs in this system against their PCIE brethren in a more advanced system.
I actually did the comparison. Please check my other channel as I started to add retro content there. You can find it in the featured channels. The clip you are looking for is this one: th-cam.com/video/nSrdi4rVWWQ/w-d-xo.html and check the second part with the 7900GS and the HD3850
Thing has the same chipset as the MSI K8N Neo in our PC back in the day had. Only ASRock could make something like that. Where did they even find these chipsets in the era of AM3.
Very nice motherboard, you'll never bottleneck any video card with that CPU, not even the HD 3850.
Yes, but it was seen as a cheap solution back when it appeared. Everyone was migrating to PCI-Ex and AGP was becoming a thing of the past. I was fortunate to get one in a good condition and I'm able to overclock the CPU quite nicely. I'm currently compiling the results for the ATI Radeon cards and indeed HD3850 is the king of AGP. I had the impression it would be quite close to the HD4670 but the difference is noticeable. (as a spoiler, on this setup, it got 57200 points in 3dmark 2001 compared to 49190 for the HD4670 AGP) The HD4670AGP is closer to the X1950XT AGP. The second part of this episode should be out in a couple of days and all the results will be there for: 9000 Pro, 9550, 9800Pro, x850xt, x1950XT, HD 2600XT, HD 3850, HD 4670.
@@TechLab47 Yes, it makes sense. I really don't know why some motherboard manufacturers still used AGP, but I'm thankful :)
@@MidnightGeek99 The reason they moved away to PCI-Ex was that word was going around that the AGP 8X will not provide enough bandwidth which proved not true, at least for a couple of generations. Also, no top chipsets supporting AGP were released beyond some point. If you think about it nforce 3 is one of the latest on AMD. On the intel side there's the 865PE which is also pretty old since it first appeared on sk 478. (and also VIA PT880)
@@TechLab47 Nice, I've always thought that the 4670 is close to the 3850...
I thought so too but they are not. Not overclocked and on this board the differences range from 20% to almost 33%. Still I would argue that 4670 is better optimized as it draws far less power. Or it may be a driver issue, as I had a lot with the radeon cards. (I'm using 12.3 for both HD3850 and HD4670)
Hello. What power supply is installed to run the phenom 965?
Hi, it is the same PSU I use for all of my projects where an ATX is required, a Corsair TX750. For some projects on this channel I also used a Corsair VS650 and a Mushkin EP-400AP for the low powered ones like the mobile Pentium-M and the socket 7 but by the time I reached this project I decided to exclusively use the TX750 because it looked a bit more capable than the VS650 and had extra protections.
I do not get close to the same OC options on my AM2NF3 with the official BIOS 3.30. do you run a modded BIOS?
I think it's the cpu that unlocks those options. You can try these Phenom cpus even the 965 are really cheap now. I got 3 or 4 during last year and they were all around 10-12 euros. Initially I started with an Athlon 64 that was far more limited.
I also think I'm running the latest official bios from Asrock.
@@TechLab47 you're right, that's how they did it. On other platforms, the setting would be greyed out, but on this one there is no setting at all when you don't have the right CPU. Weird.
It was the CPU, with a 965BE the settings show up.
@@andreewert6576 I'm glad you discovered them. I also went from the Phenom to an Athlon X2 at some point and many of the options were gone, so I knew back then that the Phenom unlocks more.
