Definitely a great job explaining everything you need to know for the oil change! My wife just got the same sonata and I'm glad I came across your video so I don't mess anything up!
One thing I started doing when pulling any overhead mount filter is removing it with a sandwich bag around it. You can also use your latex glove. This way when removed, not a drop spills and hands/gloves stay clean.
Thank you for this most informative video. I know it is cheaper to do it myself, but took it to the dealer. Now I get pressured to align, filters, tranny oil, radiator drain and replace. 44,000 miles. I can do most of this myself.
This is a great video! I've changed oil in cars a bunch but I'm about to change it in a 'sonata for the first time. This is perfect! Also, the cleanest oil change I have ever seen! Great skills. Thank you!
They replaced my engine and turbo when it finally blew… but I had to pay for the wheel axle which was 900. Which I think went bad when motor locked up.. but everything else was free and I had 119,000 miles on car. I think someone won a lawsuit so they have to fix it.
@@srt_traplive4912 Now my “check engine light” is on because the head gasket is damaged due to leaking oil. Car’s running great but next July I’m calling up Hyundai because I don’t think I can pass my annual inspection.
I used to change the oil myself. Now I have a shop do it. Today I was surprised at Take 5 oil change when they used a impact wrench under the car AFTER changing the oil. I did not know about that cover under the engine. Thanks for answering that question!
Yes I don't like that at all when they use an impact wrench. My neighbour's daughter had her oil plug stripped last year because of that also. I helped him remove & install a new plug.
Thanks for the video. If able, always best to do it yourself. When i first got my sonata, i always have the dealership do my oil changes. Unfortunately, sometimes they forget to replace the cover. By the time i realized it was missing, it was too late and they didn’t want to replace it.
This video is amazing. At a great pace. Good camera work. Clear and to the point. Music is nice and overbearing. Explaining clear for beginners. You've made a wonderful tutorial, well done!
Great video. Really nice editing! Great video and clear audio make it really helpful. Also, I especially liked the little "pro" tips you give - listing the socket sizes, duck tape to help get the filter off, putting oil on the gasket of the oil filter, and most of all, only HAND TIGHTENING the oil filter. I once had an oil filter someone put on so tight it took me three days to get it off! Again, really nice job on the video. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful Chris. Yes I've seen video of people tightening the oil plug with an air gun. That's crazy. Also know a friend that brought their car to a well know store that does oil change & they put the wrong oil filter & their car almost stalled on the highway & caused an accident. I hate those places.
I don't like to do that because I have dropped the filter a few times, & that's a big mess. I don't believe it damages the engine with that 1-2 sec no oil in the filter since there is still oil residue if you change it quickly. If you leave it empty for a long time, I may consider it.
Okay, I rate this as "very good". I think there are some opportunities for improvement. Please think of your audience, mostly DIY newbies. While I am not a newbie anymore, I was looking for any tricks or hints so to make the job easier. First, while you had the engine running to put it up on the ramps, you could have mentioned that oil changes should not be done on a 'cold' engine, and that on the ramp will put the oil pan plug lower to allow a better, more complete drain. (As compared with a side lift with a jack.) Second, your comment about the oil pan plug, "at the last thread" is not very helpful if you don't know what that feels like. Maybe, you can think of more descriptive words, like, if you have not done this before, go slow and be ready to pull the bolt away as soon as the last thread releases. This is me being really picky. LOL Third, when removing the old filter, make sure you get the gasket! Or before you install the new filter, make sure the old gasket is removed. (In 1978 I experienced a dealer mechanic miss this step, it was a disaster!) Forth, hand tightened? This is not a good description. I want my granddaughter to learn and her hand tighten is not enough. I bought here a torque wrench and a oil filter cap wrench that she can use the wrench on. There are many fasteners that need very little torque and will break when hand tightened. Fifth, that silver aluminum washer, might have already been replaced with copper! This is not just a washer, it is a crush washer. When in doubt change it. Sixth, "don't over tighten", right, how do you know when you are tight enough, but not over tightened.... tooo late! Check the torque spec. I think of the DYIer, one that is using the bare minimum of tools and one that has bought the 6,000 piece tool set. One might have only an adjustable wrench that has no feel to it and the other has a 1/2' drive breaker bar with no feel to it! LOL Both will strip that oil plug. Another suggestion is to spread some card board down under everything when doing oil changes, no one can get all the oil into the pan, it just can't be done. The card board can be put in the trash. The oil can be brought back to the place you bought the oil. And last, I would warn that when you first start the car after an oil change, the oil light might come on for a few (1-5) seconds and then go off. If it stays on you must shut the engine off.
@@stevenpeck5949 all good points. Thanks for sharing and I will mention that for sure next video on oil change. It does feel good when you do your own oil change, doesn’t it?

all that plastic. I see you jacked it up on the side of the car. Is there anyplace safe you can use a jack on the front of the car to jack it up so you then can place the other jacks on each side of the car?
Great video,, Any benefit to adding fresh oil in the new filter? Any reason not to punch a hole in the old filter to drain oil prior to removing the the lossened filter. Important to loosen prior to punching or drilling a hole., The duct tape is a great tip.
I don't add fresh oil to the new filter before installing because I've dropped the the new filter while installing a few times & that would just make a big mess when spilled. I don't punch a hole again because of the possible mess it creates when oil shirts out of the hole, you can't predict the distance the oil lands. The duct tape has helped me out many times also. Thanks for the visit.
