Aye, he is a proper tough lad, "The Marrickville Mauler", a right hard man, to be sure. Shoulda heard some of the legends of his antics on the streets of Sydney, before he became the incredible, relentless multiple-weight world champion boxer that he went on to become.
A true fighter and warrior, and an absolute legend of boxing, through and through. Max respect, Jeff Fenech, "The Marrickville Mauler".

Great fight, great hearts. Saw this live in 91 and thought it was all Fenech, but now I see it was closer than I thought then. Cheerleading for Fenech by the TV guys maybe influenced the impression I had. Not taking anything away from Fenech's energetic performance, but Nelson was right there until the end, counterpunching beautifully.

i also watched it live then & i had no doubt that fenech was beaten. azumah was throwing wide punches in some bouts before the fench fight so that might have emboldened fenech to be gidigidi in ghanaian palance. but on the day azumah was very effective. azumah himself felt he had beaten fenech so @ the tail end of thwe last round attempted some teasing which infuriated fenech.

You're correct Mike, and I shared the same view back in 91 having only watched it once right through at that time, however having watched it again and put the commentators out of the picture the fight was very close. Nelson might have been a tad lucky to get the draw but it wasn't any robbery that it's been made out to be.

Nelson did not educate Fenech, Fenech was a one trick pony a very tough and very good one trick pony, they had one battle plan attack regardless and at his peak it was the only plan he needed as his record shows. It was a Nelson team that was educated,as proved in the second encounter.I personal have witnessed Fenech being knocked down twice, and it was the same punch that got him on both occasions,a looping over the top right hand. the first mans to nail him with it was Martinez in Melb,he hit Fenech ,Fenech hit the Ground, got up took the 8 and back pedal for the remained of the round, very close to being beating if not for the bell, come out the next round and destroyed Martinez.I believed Nelson went to school on that fight,he was very patient until got the opportunity to hit him with the same punch. And Nelson was a more talented boxer than Fenech, not a better brawler.

If you look at Nelson at the end of the fight,......he looked very gaunt. He was sick, just getting over Malaria. I'm not a fan of either guy and not making excuses for Nelson, but he was a warrior for lasting the 12 rounds and staying on his feet in the last round. The difference is seen in their 2nd fight when Nelson was healthy. He walked right through Fenech when Jeff was in his prime at about 26 or 27, and Nelson was past his in his 30's. @@victorasalu4466 He must have been watching the same fight I was. Fenech landed plenty of punches and they did a good deal more damage than Azumah's punches as the fight wore on. Why do you think they "lost" Azumah's mouth guard? He needed a rest. Why do you think Azumah took a swing after the bell? He was frustrated. He had reason to be.
I had Azumah winning 2 or 3 rounds. I guess I could give him four if I were being generous. Fights like this have me wondering who is more corrupt? Politicians or Boxing Judges.

Nelson has to date been the best and most successful fighter to come from Africa. Jeff Fenech was two years out of the ring prior to this fight with issues with his hands so it should have been all Nelson with his years of experience. From round one to the final round Fenech drove a truck over Nelson and hurt him several times, most notably in the final round. Through the entire fight, Fenech forced the action and had Nelson against the ropes in every single round. Nelson's best punch was actually after the bell! This is a perfect example of the corruption in boxing and the term 'robbed' is the biggest understatement. Throughout the entire fight Nelson had no answer to Fenech with the exception of 'magically' losing his mouth piece between rounds!

Granted Fenech was robbed by this decision, i believe any mentally tough champion would have been so outraged by this decision that they would batter their opponent in any rematch. Are you saying Fenech wasn't mentally tough numb nuts? If two closely matched boxers fight each other ten times, it is unlikely that the same fighter will win each time. By my count Fenech won 2 out of the three, including the last one. That would make him the "ultimate warrior" left standing by your criteria.
