Though we were pissed at makers for this track and I agree it was annoying and seemed like their characters were degrading but I guess makers wanted to show how both of them are imperfect humans with conflicts to solve and many a times like any normal human they are bound to make mistakes and wrong decisions.
The important part is realisation.
I guess this is also something makers did differenly unlike other daily soaps where the leads are holier than thou.
