I read Word Slut by Amanda Montell and as someone who had studied linguistics it mostly felt redundant but I could see how it would be a good book for someone who needed to know more about how English tackles gender.
i really recommend the killing moon duology by n.k. jeminisin. it’s to this day one of the most enchanting, exciting and profound books i’ve ever read. i really love your videos and your perpective, this was great as usual! sorry for any mistakes, i’m not used to writing in english. In regards to the Expanse Series, the TV show covers the first 6 books and the novella "Strange Dogs" (book 6.5), and I believe the novella "Drive" (Book 2.6), but that hasn't been released yet. The events in the TV series and book are the same, the people that are part of events or parts of their personality in the tv show is slightly different than the show. However, it doesn't seem to change the over all story and epicness.
I had "The Love Con" in my January wrap-up, too. I thought it was cute but I wasn't blown away because I felt a lack of tension since they kind of already loved each other from the start. BUT, I do love to cosplay, so that was a fun aspect for me.

I finally got to Jade Legacy and it HURT in the most 5 star way possible. I also tried reading The City We Became last year and DNF'd. it was my first attempt at N.K Js books but not my last. im still excited to get into Broken Earth which ive heard nothing but good things about. I went through a severe round of depression end of 2020. 2021 came around and was prob the worse year of my life but meds helped me keep my head above the water and mind from spinning to process it all. The Expanse series takes off like a bullet train after Caliban's War. The authors suggest reading them as if they are a duology/trilogy. Books 1-2 go together, 3-4, 5-6, then 7-8-9 as a trilogy finish the series. I am rereading book five which is my favorite because Naomi is everything. I can't wait to see your initial reactions to the rest of the series. I feel you. My January was rough. I caught omicron, had car trouble and so much other stuff. It will be okay. Love the puff.

The characters, the plot, the world-building, the writing... Didn't like anything at all. But i wanna read other books by her.

I enjoyed The City We Became. Not my favorite Jemisin book, but the audio was like listening to an action movie. My January reading was so-so. Daughter of the Moon Goddess was probably the best of the bunch.
If you enjoy police procedurals, I HIGHLY recommend Cordelia Kingsbridge's Seven of Spades series. Gay romance with an intense serial killer pursuit. Fantastic books!

I agree with you so much about The City We Became. I thought relying so heavily on stereotypes was a choice. At this day and age? Please. Also, I'm from São Paulo, which is the largest city in Latin America with almost twice the population of NYC, and the fact that the story implies NYC is diverse enough to warrant 5 "spirits" and São Paulo (or even Tokyo) is not... sighs. I still want to get to her backlist too, though, I love her writing style and The Broken Earth trilogy was a masterpiece. And I hope you're feeling better, I'm sending you virtual hugs 💜

I'm so glad that about copaganda. I have a lot of reservations about IRL police, but I love watching FBI and SWAT. A lot of it is character-driven though, I don't know if OA and Hondo could exist in an actual police environment.

Sorry to hear you didn't like the N. K. Jemisin. It's definitely an urban fantasy- which is a favorite subgenre of mine. I loved The Final Girl Support Group. With his stuff you have to be able to appreciate his heavy 80's trope leaning and his sense of humor. His choices are very intentional though I can see how they might not be for everyone. I also appreciate a well done slasher film that Knows what it is too (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Chuckie, etc). I've read a couple of Slaughter's books. They're fine- but nothing special. Caliban's War- did you say Space Opera?! 🤔 You might want to try Hunt the Stars by Jessie Mihalik. Very fun Space Opera 🌌 Leanna definitely has a type. 🤣
I totally agree re: The City We Became. I find it difficult to discuss, because while I agree with the themes and the message of the book... god damn you cannot have your own thought during the whole thing. Like you, I like my social commentary to have a level of nuance in the story. This was literally like... main character: "gentrification is bad" white bystander: "I believe gentrification is actually good and you are a criminal thug and I am extremely racist." main character: "you are a racist and a bad person. this is why racism is bad" Like, was there not a more interesting way to convey that message in the story???
I felt the same way! N. K. Jemisin was like "I want to make absolutely sure you know that this character is the Right Kind of Person so I'm going to make sure they say the Right Thing nice and loud for no real narrative reason." I'm definitely going to check out her other books but I could not get through TCWB

That's super disappointing about Cultish. I'm rather new to non-fiction and that one seemed intriguing to me, but maybe not so much anymore. Mediocre was fantastic though.
You skin looks so good in this video!! I'm bummed you didn't like The City We Became but I see where you're coming from! It was super heavy-handed on social commentary. There were sections of it where you could tell it was written post-Trump election and Jemisin dumped all of her feelings about it into the book. I think I had to suspend my belief that any character could be so stereotypical without nuance and true motivation behind their actions. Like Staten Island was just racist end-of-story and there was a really big opportunity to say something else there.

I’m the same with you about time! It stresses me the heck out. I hate thinking about how quick it goes and then wondering what did I even do with that time. It’s such a trigger for me. I'm so glad that about copaganda. I have a lot of reservations about IRL police, but I love watching FBI and SWAT. A lot of it is character-driven though, I don't know if OA and Hondo could exist in an actual police environment.

Sorry to hear you didn't like the N. K. Jemisin. It's definitely an urban fantasy- which is a favorite subgenre of mine. I loved The Final Girl Support Group. With his stuff you have to be able to appreciate his heavy 80's trope leaning and his sense of humor. His choices are very intentional though I can see how they might not be for everyone. I also appreciate a well done slasher film that Knows what it is too (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Chuckie, etc). I've read a couple of Slaughter's books. They're fine- but nothing special. Caliban's War- did you say Space Opera?! 🤔 You might want to try Hunt the Stars by Jessie Mihalik. Very fun Space Opera 🌌 Leanna definitely has a type. 🤣
I totally agree re: The City We Became. I find it difficult to discuss, because while I agree with the themes and the message of the book... god damn you cannot have your own thought during the whole thing. Like you, I like my social commentary to have a level of nuance in the story.
This was literally like...
main character: "gentrification is bad"
white bystander: "I believe gentrification is actually good and you are a criminal thug and I am extremely racist."
main character: "you are a racist and a bad person. this is why racism is bad"
Like, was there not a more interesting way to convey that message in the story???
I felt the same way! N. K. Jemisin was like "I want to make absolutely sure you know that this character is the Right Kind of Person so I'm going to make sure they say the Right Thing nice and loud for no real narrative reason." I'm definitely going to check out her other books but I could not get through TCWB

I'm bummed you didn't like The City We Became but I see where you're coming from! It was super heavy-handed on social commentary. There were sections of it where you could tell it was written post-Trump election and Jemisin dumped all of her feelings about it into the book. I think I had to suspend my belief that any character could be so stereotypical without nuance and true motivation behind their actions. Like Staten Island was just racist end-of-story and there was a really big opportunity to say something else there.

I would say Feb personally
I always use the month when I finished reading, so I would say Feb.
I usually say February but who cares, count it as January if you want !
