Lao Shan Lung is a prime victim of power creep in Monster Hunter. In its debut, being a gargantuan lizard that wrecked castles just by tanking through everything thrown at it was a solid case for awesomeness. But as the series went on, the notion of 'big lumbering juggernaut' went above and beyond Lao. Other behemoths have gotten far bigger, like Jhen, Zorah and Dala, or have got more interesting themes, like the flying forest octopus and the whirlpool whale monster. Lao's left lumbering behind, lacking any notable quirks or abilities that make it more distinctive. The poor thing has gone from 'Basically Godzilla' to 'The Great Jaggi of Big Boys'
Couldn't have said it better, I can tell fighting Lao back in Freedom is a similar rush to your first Dalamadur hunt. His entire fight is based off you feeling nostalgia for him, and I feel it shouldn't be compared to our standards in MHW/Rise etc. It's a iconic fight that should be respected for its time.
I can readily see how Lao might be reintroduced to the series, mostly through the expedient of saying "This one's faster than the others we've encountered before" and having you fight it in a regular hunt format rather than a siege. Having the 'faster Lao' means that the big boy can take a more active role in the hunt and even pursue _you_ at times. You could even spread it over multiple hunts, with each one with the objective of breaking part of his armour so that he's finally vulnerable to the final arena with siege weapons. Or just put him in a MHStories2 DLC campaign. The turn-based combat is pretty scale-agnostic.
I hope that they some day fully rework these old Siege Fights. Grandpa Rathalos deserves the Fatalis treatment considering he is the reason why we are only allowed to hunt in groups of four.

oh dear... here we go again. forgive my repetitiveness. we've yet to see how Lao Shan Lung's fight can be integrated into the 5th genetration, right? i think Sunbreak's a good place to upgrade him. what i think would work is that Lao Shan Lung could invade a large fortress (bigger that the one in the Rampage): slamming into siege weapons, blowing hunters away with his breath attack, and pounding the fortress with his head if he reaches it. then there's Ashen Lao. yes, i mainly want him for his SnS (which btw is *one of the best SnS in FU!* ); but putting that aside, if they added back Lao Shan Lung, Ashen Lao could stand for an upgrade. let's face it. right now, Ashen Lao is nothing more than just regular Lao Shan Lung with a paint job. but i might be able to fix that. we know that Ashen Lao lives in volcanic regions, right? that type of environment would be tougher to live in than in a normal mountainous area. to adapt to the harsher climate, Ashen Lao Shan Lung would develop a flame sac in his throat, allowing him to breathe fire (given the environment he lives in, it fits. i know, it would make it a giant, flightless version of Fatalis. *But i don't think a unique element would work on him) and he'd become more aggressive. meaning that when we fight Ashen Lao, we wouldn't be up against a peaceful, gentle giant focused on fleeing and that ignores hunters; we'd be fighting a giant, aggressive, fire breather that is faster compared to his normal counterpart and is intent at (for whatever reason) destroying the fortress. not only that, because he's aggressive, he'll also attack the hunters DIRECTLY, adding more tension to the fight than there already would be. meaning that one would have to distract Ashen Lao to slow him down while the others throw everthing they got with the Cannons, Ballistae. *just a reminder. he's called "Ashen" due to the ash particles that landed and solidified on his shell as he grew in the volcanic region, giving him his colouration.
This is the first time ever that I have seen cannons actually being used against a Gen 2 Loa Shan Lung. This is maybe one of the few recorded instances of it now

I honestly don't perceive pain in the same way most people do anymore. My body and mind have gone through a lot of pain in my 23 years of life, so a little rib cramp is like a pleasant experience.

It could be reworked to be faster and more threatening and then just explained away by making it a younger version/subspecies only found in that new area or something. But your right it's up to Capcom at the end of the day whether they want to stick with the old lore or not.

In my childhood I needed 7 month to defeat this lao Shan lung alone. This battle force me to put the correct skills to win time to hit him. For example the wind pressure of his big steps. Is for me the hardest battle in Unite to do alone.
Being fully aware of how dangerous that tail has been in the past, I'm a bit surprised they didn't see the tail coming. Stay at the front of the tummy & you'll do the best damage without getting hit. 👍
