Ryan Poles came off as nervous, timid, and lacking confidence. How in the world will that man convince a top candidate to come to Chicago? No chance. Kevin Warren sounded far more sure of himself.
Completely agree. His answer was pretty jarring as to how they will find a head coach that isn't like Eberflus: "we'll make sure to research more, and look at the data". He looked startled by the question. How do you not anticipate and prepare for that ahead of time? Concerning.
Good grief, as long as Poles is heading up the process I'm good. We should only be nervous if George was hiring, because he would get it wrong. He shouldn't be anywhere near operations or the facility
You know why the press conference is a disaster? Because it confirmed business as usual. No changes. keeping the same shitty GM. same shitty organizational structure. it doesn't even matter what coach you get when the GM makes awful decisions.
One thing to remember, Thomas Brown was a good play caller as OC but once he put that HC hat on he didn’t win games and the play calling wasn’t good because he had too much to think about. So, just because Ben Johnson calls great plays as OC, doesn’t mean that will translate to when he has more in his head to think about as HC. He might pull a Nathaniel Hackett and self destruct like when he was HC of the Broncos and waste timeouts, not get plays in on time, false starts, etc.
This is why I'm glad he had an extra year as OC. Playcalling is quicker and easier for him now. Takes up less bandwidth. There's always a chance he sucks though. It is just much more likely he is capable of handling it than a Hackett or a Nagy than those guys given his level of experience and prowess.
Poles came off like a defeated man. None of those three press conferences would make any top HC or OC want to come here. Vrabel and Johnson probably see how dysfunctional this organization is. Get ready for another Trace Armstrong bargain bin special
Let’s get real: the bears are way less desirable today than they were before these press conferences. They exposed again, their internal shit show mumble word salad, and lack of organizational clarity on the football side. Hey, why don’t they make these new coaches interview with some of the beer vendors? The hotdog booth sales guy should have a voice, right? Heaven forbid we let the football people be the football people experts I think Kevin Warren could possibly be a word salad cancer for the bears org - I truly hope I’m wrong
I think Dan Bernstein has flat out stated on more than one occasion that he thinks Warren is a con man. Not sure if that's a good characterization or not but I know Warren lost me when he started a press conference with a priest saying a prayer for a new stadium.
You guys are the best, and the Bears deserve all the snark they can get, but the nitpicking of the panel is very odd to me. Instead of saying if they didn't want people making a big deal of it they shouldn't have mentioned it, perhaps someone on the beat could have asked a follow up to get more information on the level of involvement of those on the panel. Instead, we speculate wildly about operations people hijacking a call with Mike Vrabel.
The boys are right. Hilarious that they’re having an interview panel again like they’re the same as any corporation. When all the random VPs who were on the panel to hire Flus and Poles don’t even work for the Bears anymore 😂
In the end, this coaching search should NOT be as exhaustive. You narrow it down to three or four top candidates for HC, and interview just them. With most decision making, you take on too many possibilities and you start getting confused. Instead give someone 3-4 choices of HC and that’s it. Otherwise, you open Pandora’s box or Can Of Worms amongst decision makers. Hoge, great idea on Matt Nagy interview to know skeletons in Halas Hall.
I’ll say something that for some strange reason may be controversial for many people. I don’t think our owners are as bad as everyone says!! They certainly don’t always hire the best people, but I think they finally have in Poles and Warren. These guys do know football more than most of us fans……
They're nice people no doubt, but incompetent and can't stop meddling. Requiring churchgoers who don't sweat > good coaches being the biggest. Terribly awful at business and football.
Worth pointing out, Waldron last season WAS the "obvious hire" for OC. That was the guy most of the people where banging the table for, and he was terrible. The point is, it's a mistake to just assume vrabel or Johnson are going to be good hires. I don't mind them casting a much wider net. I'm just concerned that my faith in the organization to pick the right guy (whoever that may be) is basically non existant. Especially when I cannot fathom why Poles wasn't fired on Monday.
If the bears score a ton and caleb looks great and lose 41-40 every week, the fanbase would consider it a win (for now). To their point, just fing do it
Actual show starts at 4:20, everything before that is slow motion talking about nothing. Wish Wiederer could replace Hoge on this podcast.

In the last 12 years the Bears are 44 games under 500. Haven't won a playoff game in 15 years. 1985 was 40 years ago, what have they done in the last 4 decades ?????
40 years a Bears fan in the London UK. There is almost nothing more important to me than the Bears. No other fan is more invested. If the Bears hire Mike McCarthy then I’m done. You might think so what, nobody cares. Well if I can turn my back on the Bears then so can anyone.
In regards to the 36 people that are going to be in each one of these interviews.... This team is and will forever be an absolute nightmare. And all these people are going to be taken away from their normal jobs to sit in these interviews?? That doesn't affect day-to-day business??? What an absolute shit show!
This hiring methodology is happening all over corporate America, interviewing hundreds of candidates, none of them being perfect enough, the illusion of choice making it difficult to choose one above the others.
I wasn't worried until Poles started talking. He sounded lost. Warren seems over his head. I've never been a sell the team guy until I heard George. What a mess that was. They're all clueless.
Having all these business people involved in the hiring process is a big mistake. Candidates don’t need to know these people unless the coach is hired. Have the actual football people do the interviews aka Poles & Cunningham
@josephpayton7522 A clock is right twice a day. Doesn't take much to do the obvious thing. Hopefully the HC hire can be that second time the clock is right by doing the obvious thing.
@@RiChicago that's kind of my point. They accidentally were looking for a QB when Caleb was available. Now they're accidentally looking for a coach when Johnson is available. I hope it works out. With the huge interview group, I hope everyone ends up going with the safe choice of Johnson.
@josephpayton7522 I agree. I hope the wide net is more just doing research for staffing Johnson up and being as informed as possible on these guys to avoid another Waldron/Eberflus hire, but I'll believe it when I see it. Nothing about this has me feeling warm and fuzzy that they'll get it right other than that they might just do stuff dumb enough to end up with the right answer despite showing their work and it's a scribbled incoherent mess lol.
All this talk about interview participants. Quite possible the business folks are rotating, and not everyone is in every interview. They’re scheduling something like 15+.
If I were GM, I fired Getsy after 1 year. Fired Flus after the 4th game last year. Hired Jim Harbaugh the day after his National championship. We are now the 5th seed in the playoffs , and the Bears media is critical still……
McCaskets hate Harbaugh because he's rough around the edges. Not their vanilla halo type. Warren also butted w him heads over collegiate covid season. Zero chance.
Football people should make football decisions and only the very top two maybe three finalist should have additional interview interviews with Business people in the front office…. This is corporate type interview style. The head football coach does not need to get along with anybody running the stadium. It would be great, but it’s not necessary.
Ok here, what makes Mike and Ben the better choices . They’ve never coached the Bears in Chicago lol just saying. There is about 15 if not more interviewing for the job. Liking someone is not a reason. ? I do like the whole Caleb and his ability to recall different things. BearDown “let’s go”

And I'm not sure the bears even get any of the top 4.
@@kylebenhart3929 thats where I’m at Mike has already proven that he can be a good head coach. All we know about Ben is that he can call some good plays for Detroit who have a vastly superior offensive line and better weapons too. Ben may still be #2 option tho
Yes, stop overthinking this... just hire The Guy! It's obvious. If Vrabel leaves there without being the coach this "panel" or whatever they're calling themselves, may as well fire themselves. It's not the rocket science they are making it.
Let Poles hire the head coach. Let the head coach pick his staff. Everyone else stay out of the way. No on Vrabel he was not good at Tennessee and got fired. I like Pete Carroll he motivates his players. His teams play tough defense and a hard nose offense. He really wants to coach the Bears too. He already has his staff ready to go. Ben Johnson what I have seen he is a great offensive coordinator and not much else.

Coach candidates won’t give a shit about the stadium plan especially before they are hired.
Dan Wiederer killed the press conference with the best questions 💯
