Happy B'day Alan!: Fire Alarm, Concert At The Laundromat & Alan And The Hairy Doyles, Red Bank, NJ

- Oh, what a night! Alan is gonna remember his 55th birthday gig for a very long time, as will all lucky enough to be there tonight. The show was going great - the crowd had sung him a hearty Happy Birthday, he'd asked for and gotten lots of singing along as his gift...then, in the middle of We Don't Wanna Go Home, suddenly the mics went dead. After a minute or so (and another round of Alan-induced Happy Birthday), Security told everyone we had to evacuate the premises immediately because a fire alarm had gone off.
Everyone went outside and milled around a bit, then suddenly there was movement of the crowd, people suddenly heading around the corner. Why? Because Alan was standing up on a bench outside the Laundromat across the street from the venue, giving an impromptu outdoor concert. He'd brought a young fella with a great voice (this would be Alex Cumminskey) up onto the stage (the bench) with him, and they were singing a lovely duet of Jack Stewart. More and more people began to show up to the Concert At The Laundromat, and Alan obliged them with Rant & Roar.
By the time he'd finished that, we got the all clear to go back into the venue, where all took their seats again and the show went on, the first song back being Welcome Home (To The Venue). Then, when it came time for Alan's solo encore song, he called Alex up again to duet with him on Wave Over Wave, which was followed by the entrance of a crew of vest-wearing, long-haired Doyles - redheaded Doyles, must be some sort of recessive gene thing - carrying in a gigantic sub (or maybe hoagie, I never recall who says which where in New Jersey) for the Birthday Boy.
The show finished up with all of the Hairy Doyles (including Kris, who noted it had been a long time since he had played with hair) doing I've Seen A Little and one of the most extraordinary Ordinary Days anyone has ever seen. (After the show, Alan was wandering around outside with slices of his birthday sub on a plate, handing them out to his crowd....he even had a roll of paper towels for use as napkins...now that is a wonderfully considerate Birthday Party Host.)
All in all, it was an unforgettable evening, made so by a spectacular Showman who always makes the most out of any circumstance and always gives his crowd the best show he's capable of giving, and also made so by his wonderful cast and crew. Not to mention a great crowd, who took everything as it came and had themselves a grand night out. Which is exactly what the Birthday Boy always wants, perhaps the best gift any of us could give him. Happy Birthday, Dear Alan.
