That this immense and well-preserved site was excavated largely through the work of local volunteers is nearly as amazing as the findings themselves. So well done!
Lindsey Davis’ book “A Body in the Bathouse” is mostly set here, at least as it was during its building phase… don’t expect historical accuracy, but like all her “Falco” books, they’re a great read!
I think there is a great case for this being financed by Vespasian for Cogibubnus who might have bene central to his early campaign in Britannia - giving the Romans a safe southern base and port. Likely also that C had spent time as a youth in Rome - a bit like Arminius - if so he would have bene part of the household of Antonia Minor, mother of Claudius and so owner of Narcissus and Caenis who were Vespasian's backers and got him this first command. Cogidubnus also held the south for the Flavians in 69 when the LII went for Vitellius. So C had backed V in both times of crisis. If C had been brought up in Rome, he would have know what fine living was all about and his network in Rome would ave been able to supply the crafts people to do this work. I know there is a question mark about C being the man - but there is no other person with his status
