@@TheLocherRoom Hi Jan Please tell him my wife and I consider him one of the all-time best actors. He is so natural; one never catches him acting. It's obvious he is a genuinely nice guy, whom you want as your friend or neighbor. (I'm sure all the Hulswit's are nice!😊) We first saw Mart in The Gift of Love : A Christmas Story, then in Route 66. Producer Dick Atkins sent us an autographed HD quality copy of the former. Wish it had a Mart Hulswit and Lee Remick autograph as well. Polly Holliday co-starred, and she was marvelous. Dick said the children never acted before; we thought they were good. God bless. Steve & Vicki
Mart Hulswit was the best Dr. Ed Bauer. He should never have been replaced. Also, Don Stewart was great as Mike Bauer. The Bauer's were the core of Guiding Light!!
This was incredible!!! My earliest memories of watching GL as a kid in the late 70s was with Mart Hulswit playing Dr. Ed Bauer. 1975 - 1984 was the golden era of GL in my opinion. The show lost so much of it's heart and soul when the Bauer and Reardon family were no longer at the core of the show. Another great reunion Alan.
Thank you, Alan, for asking Mart about Lenore Kasdorf. Rita was my absolute favorite GL character. I always loved how nuanced she was written and portrayed (too bad to be really good, and too good to be really bad). It's a shame that, once Lenore left, she was never referenced again. It was like Rita (and her sister Eve) had never even existed.
I agree; let's face it, unfortunately within the next ten to fifteen years much of the baby boomers will have died out or be too incapacitated to partake in such an interview.
Yes, Teri, I think as you do, that Fran Myers has aged very well indeed. She was as attractive back in the day as Peggy Lipton, who portrayed "Julie Barnes" in the TV police drama 'The Mod Squad'. And Miss Lipton, before her death in 2019at 72 years old, had also still appeared quite youthful, at least as of 2007, when I caught her in a guest shot in the prime time comedy 'Rules of Engagement', at the age of 61 years old. I recall having watched so many episodes of 'The Guiding Light' with my late mother from 1963-70. And Fran Myer's "Peggy Scott Dillman Fletcher Thorpe" had acted in so many scenes with Lynne Adams' "Leslie Jackson Bauer Norris Bauer."
I truly enjoy catching up with these wonderful actors/actresses from Guiding Light. I started watching in 1977 and stayed with it till it's end on September 18, 2009. So wish this soap and As The World Turns would be brought back! Also, I wish actresses Sophia Landon and Janet Grey would be brought on for an interview. These ladies were great on GL.
My mom watched 'The Guiding Light' and 'As The World Turns' when I was a little boy. I thought they were so boring at first but then I got hooked. Stayed that way for over 40 years until they went off. GL was my favorite. Peggy (Fran Myers) and Dr. Ed (Mart Hulswit) are ingrained memories from my childhood. Thank you, Alan Locher!

Hi, Alan! I am quite honored that you would take time for a personal reply to me. I highly commend you on the amazing work that you are doing in utilizing this wealth of knowledge from the stars and allowing us this rare opportunity to catch up with their lives today and to hear directly from them what it was like to be on their respective shows. This is an experience we would not have otherwise known. My tremendous gratitude to you!!!! And I know others feel the same. I do envy you this great opportunity of actually talking with these larger-than-life stars. 😀. My name is actually Daniel Bryan. I live in the mountains of Northwestern North Carolina in a town called Boone, named after Daniel Boone, as he did a lot of traveling through here and spent time here. His wife Rebecca was a Bryan, and I am actually a descendent of them. They are like my great, great, great, etc., grandparents. 😀 Oh, and one more thing, Alan. Over the weekend, I just heard a podcast called The Chat which included an episode from May 2020, with Lenore Kasdorf. I had heard nothing from her in so many years. It was great to listen to this, but the sound quality left a lot to be desired. During the interview, Lenore said she had never heard of your series and seemed that she would be interested in participating. She even said, have them get in touch with me! She said she doesn’t keep in touch with the Guiding Light cast except that she is best friends with Marsha Clark who played Hillary Bauer and that she goes out with her and her partner. They live only 5 minutes away from each other. It was good to know of this connection. Although, I am a gay man, I was totally obsessed with Rita/Lenore. 😀 If you can’t locate this episode, let me know, and I can send you the info./link. Take care, my good man. Keep up the awesome work!!! Daniel. P.S. I would love to hear your thoughts on what I shared with you about The Chat poscast. I am so surprised that neither Lenore nor Marsha has heard about your series. A shame!!! One other thing about The Chat, the hosts/interviewers were certainly no Alan Locher-far from it!!! They left a lot to be desired with regard to the topics they brought up, even seeming at a loss of what to say at times. They could have gleaned so much more history and insight from Lenore than what they did. I would love to see a conversation with you. You would ask all of the right questions and have a tremendous conversation with her. I hope this can happen. (Please!!!). Thanks so much again, Alan!!! Take good care.

I really enjoyed watching and listening to Fran and Mart about their time on GL in the 70's. My mother was a big fan of the show. I remember watching it with her. I was 9 years old. I remember Fran's real life husband the late Roger Newman who played Ken Norris. I remember his character, he was Holly's brother and also he had a wife named Janet played by actress the late Caroline McWilliams who went on later to start in the sitcom Benson. I remember the episode, I was home from school sick that day when the character Ken Norris shot Ed Bauer because Ken thought that his wife Janet and Ed were having an affair which was not the case. Ed and Janet were in a relationship long ago and never married but just remained friends. At the time Ed was married to Holly. I remember Ken was a very insanely jealous man. After he shot Ed, he was committed to a mental institution in April 1975. The actor, Roger Newman became a writer on GL. His character came back to Springfield in 1998 for a short time after 23 years in an asylum. I do remember, Ken and Janet had a baby daughter Emily, who was born before the shooting took place. Janet and baby Emily left Springfield due to the aftermath of the shooting.
Alan Locher THANK YOU so much for this presentation. These 2 were part of The Guiding Light that I knew and loved! Wow -- hi Arlettte -- thank you so much for your note. Are there any of your other colleagues still around? Maybe you and your colleagues want to sit down to look back at your time working on GL? My email is thelocherroom66@gmail.com
No offense to Peter Simon, but he was not even in the same Stratosphere as Mart Hulswit. Never ever saw the same range of emotion from Peter as Mart could give in his performances. Kudos to Mart!
Late 70s and early 80s were the best times on GL. Best writing. And honestly what they did to the great actors like this that carried the show like Mart Michael Zaslow and Jerry Ver Dorn, they deserved to be canceled long before they were. RIP GL
Fran and Mart were Great. I always wanted the show to do more with Peggy. She was a cornerstone of the show that a lot of great storylines could have been built around.
The character of Rita was very beloved by fans, that when the actress left the show the show chose not to recast. When Rita left on a plane, and pregnant, the audience never found out if Ed or Roger was the father.
I was hoping she left Springfield pregnant with Ed’s child or children. She could have had twins or triplets and this would have helped restore Bauer Power. As a writer it would have been the best way to go. Mart’s scenes with Maeve as Vanessa were really good and it would have been wonderful to have Lenore as Rita come back to that mess!
I thought she miscarried that baby after being trapped in a fire. She got back with Ed after that and then cheated on him with Alan Spaulding. After their affair was known, thats when she left town for good (supposedly to San Francisco)
@@larrygordongordon3186 she did have a miscarriage when the fire broke out in cabin but huge speculation when last we saw Rita she was on the plane headed out of Springfield and it was eluded to that she maybe pregnant. If you recall in the story she did go to San Francisco and would never meet Mike to sign the divorce papers. Alan and Ed both hired private investigators to find her to no avail. Thus the conclusion she was probably pregnant.
@@freemangriffin4953 Robert Gentry was still portraying Ed when the program expanded to 30 minutes in 1968. In fact one of the promos for the new CBS line up in 1968 features Robert Gentry, Ed Bryce and Charita Bauer.
Another great reunion Alan. Unfortunately I didn't get to see Fran's portrayal of Peggy all that much if at all. I started watching when I was 13 in the summer 1977. Mart was my favorite Ed. Too bad Alan that Lenore couldn't have been there in person with Mart. Did you reach out to Lenore? That would have been a great reunion. That was a cool story he told about bumping into Lenore's daughter out of the blue. Mart is so soft spoken that it was hard to understand him at times. It was nice that he had such fond memories working with all of his leading ladies. I hope Lenore feels the same. And Fran had some amazing stories as well. I thought it was sweet how she kept Mart engaged in the conversation when telling her stories. Congrats to her btw on DAYS two year renewal that was just announced. Even though some amazing actors and actresses are no longer with us from that era, there are plenty more to consider for future reunions. Please keep that mind Alan. Again, great interview. 😊😊
Alan do you think you could ever feature Lenore Kasdorf or the girl who played Sonny/Solita...or Stephen Yates who played Ben early on in Guiding Light?
I remember when they replaced Mart Hulswit. The soap columnist Linda Hirsch? said it was because they wanted a younger, sexier Ed. Then came Peter Simon and I was like Huh????
I think it had to do with MH being overweight and they needed someone, not necessarily sexy, but at least with a somewhat fit and trim appearance. Unfair, perhaps, but remember this happened to women all the time. Several years later three actresses, all at the same time, were termed from Another World for the same reason.
When Alan interviewed the Simon's, I think Peter mentioned they didnt even tell him he was playing Ed Bauer until right before he joined the show, Peter thought he would be playing another character.
I watched "Guiding Light" for a number of years beginning when Mart played Ed because I got hooked on the Ed/Rita/Roger storyline. I certainly remember Fran from that time as well. Most distinctly I remember when Roger was after Rita (Lenore Kasdorf was like 15 months pregnant lol) in the carnival hall of mirrors to the tune of Donna Summer's "No More Tears" which was a hit at the time. Mart was always Ed for me, no matter how popular the subsequent Ed became.
If I recall correctly, Mart was on the shortlist to be considered for the role of "Rolf" in the movie version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. He would have been very good in the role. He had the look and the presence for it.
Also would love to see more interviews with Gina Tognini or Wendy Moniz and Robert Bogue ....Beth Ehlers and Ricky Paull Goldin ....lol ...I just love all of these and so many more....
I wanted to ask Mart if he remembers Nancy Dingess? She knew Mart personally and we would always write each other and then one day it stopped. I know she had health issues and I assumed she passed. A great lady and knew a lot about daytime.
This is really interesting. I remember this actor playing Ed. I'm really having a hard time remembering Peggy. I remember the name. I wonder if there's clips on TH-cam of her maybe it'll jar my memory. I used to watch this in the seventies as a kid during the summer. I grew up on As the World Turns and The Guiding Light.
This was a fun show. It definitely made my last hour at work less boring. Thank you, Alan. I would love it if you got Amy Steele, Kristen Virgard, Janet Grey, Jo Beth Williams, and Stephen Yates.
Yes, would love to see John Wesley-Shipp, Kristen Virgard, Lisa Brown, Marsha Clarke, Amy Steele and Kevin Bacon all together!!!! Kelly, Morgan, Nola, Hilary, Trudy and Tim!!!!
Erik Parker Don't forget Denise Pence and Tom Nielsen, (Katie and Floyd Parker). I've been waiting for this group since Alan started doing these wonderful reunions. I feel though Lisa doesn't like to do interviews and that's why she's holding out. I would love to know if Alan has reached out to any of these people? Actually Denise was already on an earlier reunion.
I’m hoping for Lenore Kasdorf to show up. She has stated in another online interview that she would love to talk about Guiding Light and reunite with former cast members. Elvera Rousell along with Mart and Janet Grey would be great to see!
Oh Alan.. How I Can miss that??? Thank you so Much. I Mean to bring Mart here on Screen WOOOWW ! We Start here in Germany with Episodes from May ,1979 and Mart was Still "Ed" On This Time. Thank you so much ;) When you speak With Mart again maybe via Email? Say Big Thanks to her And "Ed" in his Version was a Idol for me. And Her Play With the Scene With Our Beloved Bert. *~* I will always Thanks to him. Greets Ollie PS: Have Mart a Agency Still? I Really Dream about to have a Autograph from him on my GL Wall in my Home.
@@TheLocherRoom Yes And how Alan. Mart to see him Wow after so Long. That was a "Boom" For me. My First Episode from GL Starts With "Ed & Rita" She betray Him And Had a Baby in her Belly.
they truly screwed up when they split up Rita and Ed, they had such great chemistry and i was hoping Rita would be redeemed in Ed's eyes after losing the baby caused by the fire that broke out after Roger left A tied up Rita in the cabin. yet instead they link her with the egotistical Alan Spaulding. i stopped watching for awhile after that, then Lenore left the show and then shortly after Ed was linked with Vanessa Chamberlin but it wasnt the same chemistry he had with Rita.
I loved the chemistry/tension between Ed and Rita. She was sexually frustrated and he was sexy as hell but didn't know what to do to satisfy her. And this was 45 years ago!! 😀
@@baconbap so did I. Rita was very smitten with Ed when she met up with him in new York city. That episode was on TH-cam entitled partial episode from 1978 things started to go south weeks later when Roger raped Rita. She kept quite believing it would change Ed's feelings for her. She went on to marry him . the guilt started rearing its ugly head when Roger raped Holly his wife at that time. Holly unlike Rita pressed charges and it went to trial and Rita remained silent. I thought she would come forward in court when she stood up but she only shouted out that he was a liar. Eventually she told Ed the day before the verdict was due in and it was a little to late because Ed went to confront Roger and Holly was also there and Holly shot Roger after he attacked Ed. She went to prison after Roger faked his death. Rita then started having sexual problems relating to Ed from all the secrecy. She then had the affair with Greg Fairbanks and became pregnant not knowing who the daddy was. They didn't find out it was Ed's until she was being held by Roger at the cabin that caught fire . Roger had left a pregnant Rita tied up at the cabin as he continued to elude the police and Rita tried to free herself by kicking over a lit lantern. Things never got back on track after that and they only reconcile for awhile until she then became smitten with Alan whom I never liked. She blew off the only man that truly loved her . I had such a crush on her myself especially when she smile d and she rocked that bathing suit at the pool party..

@@lesmis012000 Thank you. I was like who tf is Mary?
@@baconbap lol, keyboard was acting up.
Please get Lenore Kasdorf (Rita) on.
No offense to Peter Simon, but he was not even in the same Stratosphere as Mart Hulswit. Never ever saw the same range of emotion from Peter as Mart could give in his performances. Kudos to Mart!
Interesting. I think everyone had a favorite, Ed.
Late 70s and early 80s were the best times on GL. Best writing. And honestly what they did to the great actors like this that carried the show like Mart Michael Zaslow and Jerry Ver Dorn, they deserved to be canceled long before they were. RIP GL
I enjoy seeing these, I grew up watching Guiding Light and As The World Turns and seeing these brings back many happy memories ‼️
So happy to hear that, Kirk. Thanks for watching.
I’m so excited. I was looking up Mart Hulswit and this popped up. Yay! Thank you!
I hope you enjoyed it.
@@TheLocherRoom I did! Thank you.
Another good one, Alan. Mart and Fran were before my time but love seeing and learning about the history of the show!
Fran and Mart were Great. I always wanted the show to do more with Peggy. She was a cornerstone of the show that a lot of great storylines could have been built around.
I love hearing this, Matt. Thank you.
The character of Rita was very beloved by fans, that when the actress left the show the show chose not to recast. When Rita left on a plane, and pregnant, the audience never found out if Ed or Roger was the father.
I loved Rita.
Maybe Alan. Didn't she sneak through the bushes next door to the Spaulding estate to do it with Alan?
Thanks Alan 👍
Fascinating interview hearing about the live versus tape. Mark was my favorite Ed Bauer.
Glad you enjoyed it, Sharon. Thank you for watching.
😂 A lot of great anecdotes!! 😂🫠
Mart looks so good!
Yes he does to be i n his eighties and Peggy must be in her seventies. Older but not old.
@@darnellanders8768 wow they look fantastic
@@merricat3025 Fran still looks beautiful.
Mart Hulswit played J.B. King, Esquire on Shining Time Station!
He sure did. Thanks!
😊🫠 💯 star quality! Mart/Ed Bauer is soo missed.
The Guiding Light expanded to 30 minutes in September 1968, before Mart took over the role of Ed Bauer.
Yes - I just watched a bunch of the 15 minute episodes from 1967 when Robert Gentry was playing Ed Bauer!
@@freemangriffin4953 Robert Gentry was still portraying Ed when the program expanded to 30 minutes in 1968. In fact one of the promos for the new CBS line up in 1968 features Robert Gentry, Ed Bryce and Charita Bauer.

I still need to watch this. Did Fran Myers talk about being a writer, to this day, for Days Of Our Lives?
Yes she did
@@tomtrout6593 oh. I'll have to watch the whole thing. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your note. I wish Lenore would have joined us as well. It would have been perfect.
@@TheLocherRoom maybe you can get Rita, Evie, Ben and Amanda.
Loved Mart and Fran. Just wonderful. Was so upset when they replaced Mart with Peter. Horrible decision
Glad you enjoyed it!
Alan do you think you could ever feature Lenore Kasdorf or the girl who played Sonny/Solita...or Stephen Yates who played Ben early on in Guiding Light?
Michelle Forbes played Sonni/Solita
Lenore Kasdorf had a huge fan base and was a GL favorite. No character compared to Rita. One of the best in Television History!
Barbara Rodell would be a wonderful interview.
Yes she would Jennifer. I didn't get to see her on GL but I do remember her as Joyce Coleman on As The World Turns. 😊😊
I found episode of guiding light on TH-cam from late 70s with Ed Rita roger
I remember when they replaced Mart Hulswit. The soap columnist Linda Hirsch? said it was because they wanted a younger, sexier Ed. Then came Peter Simon and I was like Huh????
I was disappointed in that recast too.
I think it had to do with MH being overweight and they needed someone, not necessarily sexy, but at least with a somewhat fit and trim appearance. Unfair, perhaps, but remember this happened to women all the time. Several years later three actresses, all at the same time, were termed from Another World for the same reason.
In the interview Mart said him making waves in the actors union lead to his dismal.
When Alan interviewed the Simon's, I think Peter mentioned they didnt even tell him he was playing Ed Bauer until right before he joined the show, Peter thought he would be playing another character.
@@chadjzyk7136 I personally liked Peter Simon portrayal of Ed better.
Thanks for sharing and thank you for watching.
If I recall correctly, Mart was on the shortlist to be considered for the role of "Rolf" in the movie version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. He would have been very good in the role. He had the look and the presence for it.
👍👍👍
Also would love to see more interviews with Gina Tognini or Wendy Moniz and Robert Bogue ....Beth Ehlers and Ricky Paull Goldin ....lol ...I just love all of these and so many more....
Glad you love them, Tamara. Thanks for the note.
There are a few episodes up featuring Fran Myers as Peggy - but they are from late during her time, when she was divorcing the nefarious Roger Thorpe!
There are a few mid 60s episodes when Peggy was a teen on YT
I would have loved to ask Mart if he remembers Nancy Dingess. She was a pen pal of mine back in the day and helped with his fan club.
👍👍
This was a fun show. It definitely made my last hour at work less boring. Thank you, Alan. I would love it if you got Amy Steele, Kristen Virgard, Janet Grey, Jo Beth Williams, and Stephen Yates.
Lordy! Blasts from the past! 😀
You're so welcome Jeannette!

Love that story, Kyla! Thanks for sharing.
In the end of the show, Ed ends up with Holly.
Yes. I loved that.
they truly screwed up when they split up Rita and Ed, they had such great chemistry and i was hoping Rita would be redeemed in Ed's eyes after losing the baby caused by the fire that broke out after Roger left A tied up Rita in the cabin. yet instead they link her with the egotistical Alan Spaulding. i stopped watching for awhile after that, then Lenore left the show and then shortly after Ed was linked with Vanessa Chamberlin but it wasnt the same chemistry he had with Rita.
No it wasn't.
@@baconbap if she hadn't lost the baby things might have worked out. I was very disappointed behind her losing the baby boy.
@Big Bacon Bap I remember when Rita had to see Dr. Sara McIntyre for counseling on her sex life.
