Hey Laura, really good tips! Just few things I would like to suggest over your explanation. I would recommend to avoid coloring regular nodes. For Read nodes works fine, but for the rest of nodes you can get some headache depending what you doing. Ive opened few scripts where I delayed a lot to figure out where the issue was coming from. For example, I saw some artists coloring ZDefocus as green, Shuffle as Blue or something, and this makes difficult to find them. Also for renaming nodes, instead we can use the label as you did for the dots. I suggest to color or rename nodes if its a new node (Toolset, Gizmo, Group etc.), to make them different to the default nodes.
i like how you mention to use as least node as possible, i find very annoying when people use 1000 nodes for a script that can be done in 10-15 nodes, they don't improve the quality of the final output, just convolute everything in slow the render down
