It takes guts to post your mistakes- I'd image most people would've been too embarrassed to share this with the internet. I appreciate your humility, and without it- I wouldn't have learned this valuable lesson. Thank you!

Condolences...we’ve all been there. Forge ahead.
A word to the wise, though, concerning conifers. Mostly their roots coexist with populations of ecto- and endo- mychorrhizae so removal of a lot of soil at one go is not advisable. If one must, then, take several handfuls of old soil (it will contain the native mychorrizal fungi) and add it to the new planting around the roots. Native symbionts are better than store-bought symbionts.

I'm so sorry about your tree, dude. I've also lost trees. 3 maples. I bare-rooted, wired and pruned all in one go, and in the wrong season. Learning is part of Bonsai.

Yeah, sometimes gotta learn the hard way! Always repot spring/early spring (or late winter with protection) depending on the species. Some exceptions, like mugo pine, give you additional repotting opportunities.

Thank you for helping us learn from your mistake. I could feel your excitement to bring home a new project tree. I also felt your pain as the tree slowly degraded in condition.

every dead tree is a learning lesson, it's just better to learn lessons on cheaper material though. =0)
